To the rescue: cats and dogs

Carol Hawn-Miller and Cindy Liggett are local animal advocates who work to save the lives of homeless cats and dogs. In 2001 they founded Kitty and K-9 Connection, a non-profit rescue/foster/adoption program. In this blog, they will discuss the issues around the numerous homeless cats and dogs in Anchorage, and the process of placement, including animal and human behaviors that lead to success or failure. They are pictured here with Gladys on Carol's knee, Cherri in the middle, and Ambrosia the cat on Cindy's lap.

We should give out awards

to those people who dump their pets at Animal Control for the most asinine reasons. The most common reasons, it seems, are: 'we're moving - can't take', 'I'm pregnant", and "i'm allergic". I've heard landlord found out, too many pets, my dog/cat had puppies/kittens, kids don't take care of, sheds too much, barks too much, my new boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't like (get rid of him/her - your pet is more loyal), too energetic, "the dog isn't bonding to me", pet is too expensive, and I could go on and on and on.

One of my recent rescues was a white & black kitten that Animal Control asked me to rescue with a broken leg. The owner had dumped him off there citing "can't afford the medical bills". He already had a splint on, so had already been seen by a vet. The owner actuallly left her name and phone number on the pet profile sheet, so I called her to find out when the cat had been seen, by which vet and how it's leg became broken. She informed me that her mother had "shooed" the cat off the table. Okay, from my experience, when you shoo a cat off the table it doesn't end up with both bones in the rear leg broken.

We should have a "Most Asinine" Award of the month (or some such name) for the reason people got 'rid' of their pet or other idiotic owner action like when this guy got his dog neutered and had neuticles inserted. For those of you who don't know what neuticles are, they are testicular implants...I think it's a macho male thing.
