Glass collection temporarily suspended

A mountain of glass to be processedBeginning January 5th, the glass drop-off containers at the Anchorage Recycling Center off Dowling Road (Smurfit-Stone Recycling), the Anchorage Regional Landfill and at Brown Jug Warehouse on Old Seward will be removed. All recyclers are asked to stop bringing glass now and dispose of it along with their trash.
Glass recycling in Anchorage is facing some steep challenges as outlets for the processed material decline and quantities of glass dropped off continues to rise. The glass plant will continue to operate in Anchorage but collection will stop, at least for now. EK Industries is working through a backlog of processed and unprocessed glass and has sufficient supply for several months.
Many of us, including the Municipality and ALPAR, are working to expand glass processing capacity, reduce operating costs and open up new outlets for recycled glass. It’s still too early to tell how long glass collection will need to be suspended, but it’s likely to continue through the winter. Please resist stockpiling glass until collection resumes. And be sure to read signs posted on the bins at collection centers and follow their instructions. Leaving materials on the ground increases operating costs and puts recycling programs at risk.
What local products do YOU think can use recycled glass?
