From David Hulen in Anchorage --
Is former Anchorage police chief and ousted Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan considering running for office? And if he is, what office?
Monegan certainly left the questions open when he gave a talk on ethics yesterday at UAA. (And fielded questions about Troopergate and his future plans, among other topics).
KTUU and the blogs Blue Oasis (which has audio), What Do I Know? (which has partial video) and Progressive Alaska report Monegan's answers to the future-plans questions.
"I heard a rumor that somebody's trying to get you to run for mayor," said a student. She asked if that was something he was considering.
Said Monegan: "I heard the same rumor. Next question."
A professor asked Monegan what he saw himself doing over the next two years.
Monegan: "Honestly, I always felt myself to be the kind of person that...I'm pretty secure in who I am, not what I am. And so really, I could do anything from running for office to being a greeter at Wal-Mart...There's going to be opportunities, I think, that'll come, some decisions that I'll have to make that I'll do in partnership with my wife... "
Later, he was pressed again on whether he's thinking about a run for governor.
"I understand there's a policy, and I want to adhere to the policy of the school, this is not a political forum...I don't want to get in trouble."
Blogger Linda Kellen Biegel asked the question another way: What would he say to supporters who would like to see him take a "prominent leadership position" in the state?
"As long as it's not violating any rules, I can honestly say that my wife and I are talking about it."
Monegan, who is registered as a non-partisan, is scheduled to speak to the Bartlett Democratic Club on Dec. 11.
