To the rescue: cats and dogs

Carol Hawn-Miller and Cindy Liggett are local animal advocates who work to save the lives of homeless cats and dogs. In 2001 they founded Kitty and K-9 Connection, a non-profit rescue/foster/adoption program. In this blog, they will discuss the issues around the numerous homeless cats and dogs in Anchorage, and the process of placement, including animal and human behaviors that lead to success or failure. They are pictured here with Gladys on Carol's knee, Cherri in the middle, and Ambrosia the cat on Cindy's lap.

Dumping Excuses

Okay, I thought I'd heard it all. The dumping excuses people come up with to ease their consciences. I was at Animal Control today for a training class and during the break I wandered through the cattery. There were the usual excuses...moving, baby, too many cats, etc., but today I read one I'd never heard of before. Bambi, from Palmer, dumped her 7 year old black tabby cat off at Animal Control...get this...because of hairballs. Yep, you read it correctly...hairballs. Something so easy and inexpensive to control. Something all cats go through. Hopefully Bambi doesn't dump her kid off at family services after he barfs up his macaroni and cheese.
