Alaska Politics Blog

This is the place to talk about Alaska politics -- state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier has probably never been more interesting than right now -- the governor as candidate for vice president, the broad and still-evolving corruption investigation, a big election, powerful members of Congress under scrutiny, and the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. Keep your comments civil and on point. Avoid personal attacks. Do not use profanity. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. Repeat offenders will be banned.

Open and transparent government?

Reporter Lisa Demer talked today to the Palin administration about the use of private e-mail accounts in the governor's office. Palin's new communciations director, Bill McAllister, gave a surprising answer when pressed about how the public could get access to those e-mails, when they concern state business and aren't otherwise exempt from public disclosure.

Listen to what McAllister had to say about open and transparent government.

Wait a minute!

Bill McAllister has just defined "open and transparent" to be whatever the administration decides to tell the public? Is that what I'm hearing? And nobody else seems to take notice of this? Guess we should just sit down, be quiet, and wait to be told what we need to know.
Wow.

  August 29, 2008 - 3:05pm | Diogenes_lamp

why not ...

you sat down and was quiet and waited to be told what to do, clear through the Murkowski administration...should be nothing new for you followers

Congratulations

Governor Palin--I may not always agree with you, but you are a needed "breath of fresh air" for Alaska. "COB's" take notice: you tried to put her down, you lost. Wise up.

Palin for VP

I think his choice was brilliant! People outside of Alaska have no idea what a 'goldmine' Sarah Palin is. Smart, funny, approachable, warm, tough, honorable, honest are just a few of her qualities. This country is READY to vote for a woman or a black man....just NOT the ones who were the obvious choices. Wake up people! This is not politics as usual, this will be the shake-up we are looking for.

  68     August 29, 2008 - 8:02am | TheSdog

Picking a woman was a good idea

if that woman had been Kay Bailey Hutchinson.

McCain gains nothing with Palin. Alaska was already ion his column.

She will get slaughtered in the debate with Biden.

The left wing sites will also pull up the "I do not know how the state budget works" and the giggling on the Bob and Mark Show.

She is also being investigated and that will now become front and center in the media as well as her fumbled handling of the episode.

again you are wrong

people want reality.

Everyone knows Green's a bit**.

The investigation will show she is a sister and family member first. Privy to sensitive information.

She will not get slaughtered because she is real.

Gus

Alaska politics is an extremely small pond. The Palin will not get a free pass nationally like she does here.

It will not be Obama or even Biden that goes after her primarily. It will be the left wing sites and some of it will get picked up by the mainstream media.

It may escape Fox but it will get play elsewhere on cable.

It is likely time for me to change my party affiliation. The last R I voted for was Lisa when she was running against Knowles.

That

was my first thought when Biden was choosen... the Biden vs. Palin debates.

Debates are great. The body language, the way each 'attacks' and how one responds to a attack... how each portrays what issues are important... it is going to be a great show.

  65     August 29, 2008 - 7:18am | jkilvik

Palin..a good choice..

I think Palin was a good choice. While it's true she has little or no experience and her debating and speech making skills leave something to be desired, she's certainly capable of learning, making needed improvements, and updating her knowledge of national affairs. Heck.. the election is more than two months away...

  August 29, 2008 - 7:23am | leowassilie

you don't understand

people want reality.

She has always held her own in debates. She just comes from a real perspective and not some lawyered up speech.

  August 29, 2008 - 9:00am | Emperor

Her own perspective?

She's an idiot. Is that the perspective you're thinking of?

  64     August 29, 2008 - 7:12am | nick

Palin

Palin - solid choice. I've always liked McCain as a Maverick and that's why many of us Alaskans love Palin. Congrats Palin!

  63     August 29, 2008 - 7:09am | Stags_Leap

I'll believe it when MAC says it

if true -I will be switching my vote to the DEMS. This would be the stupidest decision ever on a national scale. She has ZERO experience...is dumb, can't debate, no foreign policy or military experience....and prior to being Governor for the past 2 years she was a Mayor of Wasilla.

I can't believe McCain would be so stupid. Biden will shred her...She will be the downfall of McCain's campaign.

Obama in 2008.

  August 29, 2008 - 10:43am | rfn

Nice try at a joke.....

but we all know the decision to vote Democrat was made months ago when Lyda tucked tail and ran from running. Left only Ms. Menard, the anti-Lyda, and the nice young Democrat fella.

As to Biden:

This definitely was a calculated risk. I believe waiting for Obama to make his choice was shrewd, indeed. In the classic sense, Biden/Palin is a mis-match in a debate. However Biden is constitutionally unable to contain himself. No matter how well coached he will come on as a pit-bull, arrogant, abusive, and foaming at the mouth. All Ms. Palin needs to do is stay under control with minimal but cogent responses. Don't try to take him on; let him destroy himself.

He will.

  August 29, 2008 - 10:37am | Bluemarlin

I think you have been imbibing too much in your user name to make wise comments. Palin's a great choice. We need a shake-up in this country and this is it.

GO SARAH!

why I was right the whole time and they went with exactly how I potrayed it.

It is their best stategy and I am one of the only few who can claim this.

Not that I'm giving myself props, but I surely am giving our governor props.

Go SARAH!

6 months ago I outlined the stategy

and not that she is the most scholarly, no one will ever question that.

However, I have always stated she is intelligent enough to be where she is.

I outlined the stategy as to why she is the best choice for the Republicans.

She was a lousy mayor...

... of a little Podunk town in Alaska, an even worse Governor of a State with less people that a small American city, and now she could be one heart attack away from being Commander and Chief?

Each time I think I've seen the most ridiculous thing in politics, some old white guy reaches for a new low.

  August 29, 2008 - 11:26am | Pegtalkeetna

Yeah..

She will never in a million years be able to outdo the shining example of a wonderful president like the one in office right now...get serious, he HAD experience and look at the mess he got us into. You might be surprised.

The WSJ is all a twitter about SP

First the Ds pick an unqualified Obama to be president. Now this? Truth is stranger than fiction. I guess the country really doesn't want politics as ususal, so we get some really unusual choices. Not what was intended. Could be the second VP term of Dan Quayle.

  August 29, 2008 - 9:10am | Emperor

The saddest news...

...for the country, that this is the best the Rebublicans could come up with for VP. I'll wager everyone else declined because they didn't want to run with that loser McCain.

But at least she'll be out of the State for a couple of months. I wonder if Todd and the kids will travel with her?

  51     August 29, 2008 - 5:18am | Stags_Leap

Palin is not the VP

McCain knows she can't debate and isn't too sharp on her feet...his campaign has been leaking false suggestions, which the press run with quickly. McCain needs someone who can at least debate Biden. Palin can't even debate with the local press without looking like a high school prom queen.

If McCain picks a woman -it will be either the Ebay or HP chick.

My money is on Colin Powell, Bloomberg, Ridge, and Liberman...in that order.

The beauty of the McCain campaign is that this VP guessing game has created a new media frenzy, that effectively zaps the air out of Obama's mega-event yesterday. And they used the mega-event against him, as it fit into their assertions that Obama is a celebrity of rock star status -but not presidential material.

  August 29, 2008 - 7:05am | LilysDaddy
