Strong bodies: fitness & health

This blog will cover all city and statewide bodybuilding competitions and the out-of-state guest posers. Weight-loss success stories from local people, features/bios on bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitors, coverage of fad diets. Nutritious recipes and reviews on local gyms and health food stores. I would also like to cover Adult/Childhood Obesity in America and specifically,Alaska. Weight-lifting techniques/safety as well as the benefits for women. This is just a general idea, as the blog will be constantly evolving.

P.E. Phone Home

Once upon a time my friends and I ran, climbed and received an endorphine rush while attending...dun, dun duuuun.....SCHOOL! Yes there was a time when kids actually exercised their little bodies during their school day. I realize that video games and bags of processed junk food that overflow the kitchen cupboards, now dominate the lives of children, but things weren't always this way.

My favorite part of the school day was recess and physical education class. Not because I didn't enjoy math...well, maybe a little. But mostly because I got to get out and move! Get the blood flowing and have fun with my friends.

Exercise is really an instinct that is largely ignored and smothered with laziness and cookie crumbs. Sitting around is easy. Man, when I was a kid I had a neighborhood job mowing lawns and I played outside until the sun went down (which it obvioulsy didn't in AK). The point is that I was always out playing with friends, skateboarding around town or playing softball on a team- not because I wanted to work out, but because it just felt natural to be active.

I hear things from perturbed parents all the time who say that these days P.E. class has been cut out almost completely. What is it being replaced with? Obesity has been on the rise the past few years and disease is the side effect of this. Diabetes, Cancer and heart disease are real possibilities for people who are overweight and I think in the next few years if we don't get obesity under control, we are going to see more and more young people with these serious health problems.

I'm not sure how to get the school district to realize that physical education is just as important as all the other subjects. Maybe it should be pointed out that if you don't have your health, algebra really doesn't matter anyway.

Nintendo 360 + Oreos + sitting and staring for long periods of time - physical activity = obese children.

Obesity is a preventable disease that breeds disease. Removing junky vending machines from the schools may help a little bit, but if a kid needs a snickers fix- they'll get it one way or another. The key is to instill healthy habits in your kids so their biggest decision throughout the day isn't what kind of soda to get out of the machine, but what physical activity they are going to do after school or what healthy food they look forward to eating for dinner.

So true!

I totally agree! Back in my days we didn’t have any thing better to do but to play outside. And what did we do?! Walk around the block, swim, skateboard, rollerblade, bike, surf, we even help put up a chain link fence! I was very active as a kid. And I think that’s because of my parents…we couldn’t afford cable, so TV was totally foreign to us. My dad practiced Martial Arts since I was in the Kindergarten and I remember going to classes with him and watching on the side lines. My mom was the “Pop Warner” mom and I also remember watching on the side lines during my sisters cheerleading practices. On the weekends we went fishing, I don’t think that there was a day where we just stayed home. And now I look at my girls…we can afford cable and a computer and the game consoles. And what do they do when they get home from school? They turn on the TV! I guess in a way I allow that because I didn’t have that as a child and now I know why. Parents play a huge role in their children’s lives. It’s okay to have cable and all that but it’s also okay to be active. I remember thinking that my dad was such a mean dad because he was so strict with our diet that I resented him for that. Mom on the other hand when dad wasn’t around she let us eat anything we wanted. And when I moved out of the home that’s when I totally lashed out. Ate whatever and did whatever. Then my mom got ill…Kidney failure due to diabetes she didn’t know she had. My mom’s mom went through the same thing because of poor diet and exercise. My eyes became wide open! Both my parents are an inspiration to me. Dad because he’s 59 year old and still going strong. He owns his own Martial Arts school, coaches tennis and runs marathons. And mom because I do not want to go through the dialysis and pain she goes through every day. If I don’t break the cycle now either myself or my children will have to go through the same pain. I would like my kids to think of me as an inspiration. But as parents what else can we do but to encourage good habits? It’s up to them to continue with them. Obesity is a preventable epidemic disease. But in a world where everything is based on convenience it’s a challenge to keep it under control. By the way your Mom did an awesome job with you!

Amen Sister! I think that

Amen Sister!
I think that kids today need to get outside as much as possible. It is a great way to keep parents moving too. Having a three year old gives me motivation year round to do a minimun of one hour outside EVERYDAY!
Kids need fresh air and activity to help with focusing and sleeping thru the night.Kids are a motivation as well as you with weekly bootcamp training sessions. Thank you for your caring and stamination with us.
