Refrigerators and Freezers

Several options exist for responsibly managing old refrigerators and freezers.

1. Take them to Total Reclaim for only $20. Total Reclaim will remove and recycle the freon and oil and recycle the unit.

2. Take them to the Anchorage Landfill for a freon removal fee of $20 plus a drop-off fee of $15. Solid Waste Services will have a contractor remove the freon and compressor oil for recycling and send the unit to Alaska Metal Recycling to be recycled.

3. You can have the freon removed by any licensed freon removal technician; however, even if you bring it to the landfill with paperwork indicating that the freon has been removed, Solid Waste Services will not be able to recycle the unit. It cannot be recycled with the compressor oil intact and removal of the compressor oil is part of the freon removal contract...a technicality that makes it more beneficial for you to bring the unit with freon still intact to the landfill.

If you are unable to recycle, another option is to repair, which you can do yourself or have a handyman do it for you. Appliance Parts are available online if you can't source the parts locally.
