Jim Creek is okay. The run is coming to end, though. I have noticed more and more reddening silvers. From blush to red in color. Not much action in the early am, but in the late afternoon, is better. Not much in the late pm either.
Was there yesterday, yup guy below me is right. Whole place is literally under water. I haven't seen the water at Jim Creek that high. I saw SUVs and small trucks turning back around afraid not to make it cross the water. My truck has a 1 foot lift and monster tires and water went in my truck when I crossed the water. Oh and add the 20-30 mile / hr winds too that make some giant waves and giving you some 30 degree F wind chill on top of that.
Not very well, drove down last Sunday and the whole area is under water. You can't even tell where the channel for Jim's is located, the beach where you drive up is totally under water also. I hope it goes down soon otherwise might not be any good this year.
The snagging is rampant at Jim Creek. We've been there a handful of times, and witnessed snagging almost every time. Nothing was worse than the line of about 10 people, snagging fish, throwing them in a cooler, snagging more fish. They came with about 5 coolers, and proceeded to fill them all. This was not fishing. They even had snagging hooks, not spinners or spoons. I hope Fish and Game starts patrolling.
The good news is, today we came home with two silvers and a nice red. Which is going on the BBQ.
Yes, there is a good slough of fish in there. But there are more people than fish. What is worse, is that I have witnessed people snagging 'em and then releasing them all day. They called this "catch and release". I was standing next to someone, who had caught their limit and was just fishing anyway. Catch and release. That maybe fine, but the fish are not going to bite for anyone else, if you are doing this. Just get out the water, and let the rest of the people catch some. I saw another guy, spend more time climbing in and out of the water changing hooks, than fishing. The crazies are out there. Also witnessed one guy hook himself in the side. I think He went to hospital.
Took a trip to Jim Creek got one and my boy got his 2! Worth the trip the water was boiling whent he schools would move around in front of you! Surprised at how shallow the water was!!
Yes, the Trailrace is a joke. The water lvl is very, very high right now. I stopped by this morning, and whoa. Didn't see anything, but people being snagged on the rocks. But with the water lvl so high, I couldn't believe they caught bottom.
I agree- don't waste any time at the Eklutna... I spent evenings there all week and the only thing that bit were the misquitos. Some fish were showing some skin, but no action at all. Good fresh air though.
I'd like to know what's going on at the Little Susitna.

the only fish i pulled out of eklutna this year was last night. the silvers were there and i hit one. eggs do the trick. not to much luck for anyone else there last night.
Kinda strange that silvers would show up, since they are the last species to run, which doesn't start until near August. Must have caught an early bird. The next run is sockeyes (maybe not here), chum, pinks, and then silvers. Maybe here is different?? Can't really be different, since that is how they run. Stange indeed.
Was there pretty much all day yesterday. Had a bite and the king almost took off with my rod, should've paid more attention. It was really slow though there are still a few kings jumping out of the water. They are looking pretty old and red. I think that's it for the tailrace till Silvers start coming in.
The Eklutna Trailrace in really sucky right now. Not much showing at all. Was there early morning untill 11am and saw a couple of rollers, supposedly 1 on and lost right away. Means to me, a snagging of the bottom. Lots of bites by minnows, but nothing in the way of salmon. I think this is it for the Trailrace. Can only hope for other species to come in.
Call the Sheep Creek Lodge at mile 88 of the Parks Highway for the current fishing report. They are keeping track of the River and fishing conditions at Montana Creek, Sheep Creek, Kashwitna River, Willow Creek and Clear Creek. Call 495-6227. Fishing Report updated daily.
Over the weekend the fishing at Willow, Sheep and Montana Creek was fair to good. Tonight (TUESDAY) I checked on all three creeks and saw hundreds of fish starting to move in at Willow and Sheep Creek at the mouth. At Willow if you count to 10 you can see upwards of 50 fish rise in that span. It is incredible. The Kashwitna is running clear and last night we caught a 46 pounder near the highway bridge. Call the Susitna Landing at mile 82.5 of the Parks Highway for more info. The Kashwitna is a little secret many people just don't know about. Lake Creek and The Tal were still bloown out near the mouth because of high water in the Skwentna and Yentna. I would try Willow Creek, Kashwitna and Lake Creek over the 4th of July weekend.
It was "Fish on" out at Montana Creek this past weekend. I caught 2 kings this weekend out of the 3 days. Had some bites tonight but nothing staying on. There were quite a few being caught. And, the fish were pouring in, during the last hour. Water level is dropping fast. Don't know why, for there was lots of rain this weekend over in Talkeetna area, but I guess not for the Montana Creek area.
Over all, it was a great weekend for fishing. Next weekend is the last, until the 15th. But we won't be able to keep any kings after that date. Sucks. Oh well, back to the Trailrace I go this week. Will keep everyone posted.
flew into Red Shirt Lake last night. Thirty minutes after securing our plane she hooked into a monster pike. It was 38 inches long but not sure of the weight. She picked it up on a double jointed gold and green Rappala. Saw 4 black bear from the air in the vicinity also.
I was there on Sunday evening and hooked up with a whopper fish within minutes of throwing my bait line in. I was using spin-n-glo and cured silver salmon roe. It took off up river towards the mouth of the tailrace and my line snapped. Make sure you check your drag on your reels to give some extra "play" with these fish. I see a lot of folks making fires in the evening hours and I was told by Fish and Game officer last year (07') that you will get a ticket if caught having a fire going directly on the ground. Fires can be made in fire pits that are above ground. If you all like the idea of free parking and 24 hour fishing, please be responsible and remove all of your trash. I have only been fishing at Eklutna Tailrace this year for only 3 weeks now and have removed 7 trash bag full of beer bottles, beer cans, etc. It is heartbreaking to see children out there trying to play and tripping over old fire pits containing the aftermath of last night's party. The folks that are too lazy to pick up after themselves will be the ones to thank if they implement parking fees and restrictions of fishing times.
Saw 2 caught, 5 or 6 rollers, 5 hooked but lost (including 2 from me). People, please pay attention to the rules. There are a lot of rule breakers out there, and I do not have a problem reporting them. You know who you are.
To the tourists: you don't need to go running to where the fish were seen rolling, or to be right where someone just caught one. One guy was like a dang jack rabbit, bouncing from place to place. And casting that line over other peoples lines, is just rude. Also, make sure you pull your line out of the water when someone yells, "Fish on!". Sheesh.
I was there yesterday, saw a dozen rollers, but only 1 caught just after the afternoon high tide. Plenty of wishful anglers (myself included). Fish and Game was there checking on folks again so remember the rules folks! Also, for those not sure, bait is ALLOWED at the tailrace. No live bait tho. I'll be trying again next week and hopefully things will begin to pick up. Good luck all.
Alright people, there are some kings running in there now. The water level is very high, about where it should be. Went there this morning for about 2 hours. Saw about 7 total caught and one on when leaving. So, yes they are in. People are not going to write here and leave messages and let others know about it.
The next thing, is that there is a 1 per day/1 in possesion over 20 inches. Under 20 inches, you can have 10. I saw people fishing even after catching their over 20 incher. I do know that Fish & Game came and check on people there. I saw him pulling in as I was leaving. I would have stayed, but promised my younger son that I would take him to lunch just the 2 of us.
Anyway, fish are there.
I went fishing Thursday I said is there anything a fellow said two jumping went up stream and so did he he landed a king in about 10 minutes that's all that was there I think it was slow he used a vibrex spinner silver
Just go to the Russian, enough fish in-river to spend the money on gas if salmon are what you are needing. People are limiting out very quickly and the run is just starting.
All reports are that there are no fish in any decent numbers at Eklutna. Apparently they are holding down river a couple of miles. With all the snow melt and the Knik rising they might start coming up.
I picked up a 25# king at 7:20am down stream from Berma landing. We went down to tidal water and used a #14 quickfish silver/green.
Man its been a slow year! I was almost to the point of trying bait.
Things might finally be picking up. After having a mere 31 kings come through the weir in the previous four days, 167 rolled through Thursday, which nearly doubles the total to 401. Granted, that's not enough to get too excited about, but if Fish and Game's daily counts from the last couple years are any indication, the spike is likely to continue in the next couple weeks.
According to Montana Creek Campground manager Bert Kleinenberg, a 55-pound king was caught Sunday at the mouth, which you can walk down to from the campground. Kleinenberg suggests No. 5 or 6 blue Vibrax. That said, expect king fishing to be relatively slow for at least a bit longer. The Deshka weir counted only 216 salmon as of Monday, and the Montana Creek run doesn't usually arrive until after the Deshka run has warmed up. Manager also says the trout fishing is really good right now and recommends white Bunny Flies, Glo-Bugs and Muddler Minnows. And remember: unbaited artificial lures only until July 13.

I went and spent about 8 hours at the Eklutna Trailrace, and there was nothing there at all. No one even caught a dolly! But at least it was nice out and I wan't at home all day. :)
Three of us fished this lake last Sunday morning and limited out on Artic Char, Nice size fish, even caught one Trout over 20. I had the new state record(Char) on the line and due to my trout net being a little small, he got off at the boat. This guy was huge and close to 15-20lbs. I thought it might have been a lake trout, but obviously the colors gave him away. We were trolling with small flashers with a 12-18inch leader tipped with a worm. Great tech, and worked fantastic. Everytime we go to this lake we limit out on this technique. Give it a try and take the kids..they will love it!
Troll with flashers in about 20 ft of water, we were letting our line out about 20-40 yards behind the boat with a 1ounce weight attached to the front of the flasher, Not sure how far this was going down...probably right off the bottom and they were hammering it. When you find one fish turn around and keep the same tech, they were picking it up everytime we went over them and was a blast.
We worked the area between the second island and the point at the end of the lake.
Two weeks ago we limited out on Char using chartruse number 4 meps or whatever the Barrel looking like lures are called. We fished the flats on the right side of the first island, Water temp was 44 and fish were on the edge of the flat close to the bottom in about 8-12 ft of water on the edge of the dropoff. Even caught a few this past weekend on the same tech but in a little deeper water.
Water levels have dropped at Montana Creek and the kings are starting to move upstream.
Bert, who runs the Montana Creek Campground, said a 12-year-old kid caught a 38-pounder today near the confluence. The first king reported was caught last Tuesday and another was taken Sunday.
He also shared a cool Web site that gives real-time streamflow charts around the state. So if a river is washed out, this site could save you some gas.
Went there last three days and had no luck. Also spoke with several people and they have not seen any fish caught or rolling. Water is still low but should improve soon.
Went out on Finger Lake Sunday evening to shakedown the boat. It was windy and had to fish a fast drift. Even so each of my 3 grandsons caught a 12" trout near the end of the lake with under a half hour of fishing.

Montana Creek --
According to Montana Creek Campground manager Bert Kleinenberg, a 55-pound king was caught Sunday at the mouth, which you can walk down to from the campground.

Trailrace
I went and spent about 8 hours at the Eklutna Trailrace, and there was nothing there at all. No one even caught a dolly! But at least it was nice out and I wan't at home all day. :)

I am assuming
I am guessing, since that no one has posted anything on here, that they are catching fish. In all areas or just a few select places?

Finger Lake
Hope this helps
Good luck

Montana Creek
Water levels have dropped at Montana Creek and the kings are starting to move upstream.
Bert, who runs the Montana Creek Campground, said a 12-year-old kid caught a 38-pounder today near the confluence. The first king reported was caught last Tuesday and another was taken Sunday.
He also shared a cool Web site that gives real-time streamflow charts around the state. So if a river is washed out, this site could save you some gas.

Good question
I'm pretty sure he said on the bank. But I'll call and verify.

Eklutna Tailrace
Went there last three days and had no luck. Also spoke with several people and they have not seen any fish caught or rolling. Water is still low but should improve soon.

Finger Lake
Went out on Finger Lake Sunday evening to shakedown the boat. It was windy and had to fish a fast drift. Even so each of my 3 grandsons caught a 12" trout near the end of the lake with under a half hour of fishing.
