Myself and others I spoke with were fishing for 6-8 hours w/o getting our limits Thursday and Today. If you like standing in Water making new friends, that's what is happening at the Russian now.
My new Son-in Law and I were at the Russian two days ago and ended up with a limit each for two days. The late run is building and should be smoking hot by this weekend.
Things dropped of CONSIDERABLY after Wednesday. Myself and others I spoke with were fishing for 6-8 hours w/o getting our limits Thursday and Today. If you like standing in Water making new friends, that's what is happening at the Russian now.
Ya know when you are Carrying Six Reds from the confluence to the Russian Campground with no back pack in sight, Only a freakin stringer ta carry da fish! It's when you want to drop the fish, But ya hold on for bout 20 or 30 feet more. Those few more feet is when you well feel the Russian River Burn!!!
On the 1st of July the Russian River was poppin School after School of Reds every one had a fish on!
Planning on going to the Russian on Tuesday with some friends. Fishing still good for Reds? How's the fishing and where is everyone catching? I need smoked salmon!!!
I've been planning a trip for several years to coincide with the sockeye run, but put this year off because everything I've read says they only return on even numbered years. Now I here you guys are having a banner year and it's 2009. What's the real story?
Thanks for any advice, I've been trying to plan this "trip of a lifetime for a lower 48'er" for several years and as soon as I save enough funds to afford it, prices sky-rocket ... maybe in 2010.
The fish that return in abundance on even numbered years are the humpys or the pink salmon. The reds run every year into the Russian and it is hard to say when they hit, it seems to happen so fast and then is gone so fast. The best way is to look at F&G's website for the history of runs in years passed. They usually start counting on or after June 8th.
There is an early run of reds and a late run of reds into the Russian, I would say the better run is the early one.
the reds return every year...you maybe read for another russian river i'm not sure where it is..not in alaska...and yes you should come this year... come in mid july tho cuz this run would be over before you could come..they are boomin...i went down there and hooked about 40 fish in a hour.. great fishing...sorry for the confusion...
Not true. The salmon return every year. The Kenai/Russian Rivers actuallly have two different runs of sockeye (aka reds) every year. Of course excact timing varies a little bit from year to year, but in general, the early run hits the Russian around the middle of June but will taper off quickly and essentially be over by early July. The second run, which is usually much larger numbers wise will start hitting the Russian mid to late July and he season closes around 10 August. You can look at historical data on the Fish and Game web page.
I went down last night and I hooked probably close to 60 reds in an hour - just past the power lines. It was ridiculous, I'm going back on Saturday for another round.
save your gas money... the fishing was spotty at best, wnt down for about three hours with my son, hooked up six, landed two, the one I wanted to keep was foul hooked, the other was a spawner that was well past his prime, down from the confluence... not that good at all!
Was there 11,12 and 13th and nothing. 2 small reds were caught that i saw during those 3 days. It's pretty dead everywhere there. Alot more bears right now though for some reason.
Rumor has it the silvers are in seward now though.
I would have to say, that the silver rumor has got to be wrong. They don't start running until August. Maybe on the outside, but unlikely. Should be chums coming in now, and some reds. But silvers?? No, I don't think so. I used to commercial fish for 20 yrs., so I know how they run. Not this early yet. Not possible. Maybe a stragler.
Why does the Thursday report say "anglers still limiting"? I was there on Monday and Tuesday and fished it for 5 hours both days. No fish at all! One guy caught one. ONE FISH. It's BS to say there are limits beign caught. The confluence and the Russian are completely dead.
Wow. I've been fishing there for 20 years, and I've never seen bears like I have this year. Sunday I saw two brown bears and a black, and people moving up and down the river were reporting more. Have I just not seen them in recent years or does it seem like there are a lot more there this year?
Fished last night (24th). The sanctuary looked much thinner on fish than it did last Thursday. Fish were coming up, but only in ones and twos. Tons of flogging going on, but a considerably less amount of catching than last week.
* The Russian River Sanctuary Area opens to fishing beginning Thursday, June 26 at 8:00 am. The bag limit and possession limit remains three (3) sockeye salmon. For a description of The Russian River Sanctuary Area see page 51 of the 2008 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fish Regulation Summary Booklet.
Buddy of mine came back from a successful fishing weekend down there in the combat zone, but he ended up having to play riverside medic -- twice! First guy sunk a hook in his own nose, and my buddy cut the hook and then jammed it on through the guy's shnozzle. Dude got the bleeding stopped and then waded right back in. Second guy wasn't quite so lucky. He was trying to weasel his way into someone else's spot and hooked his own jaw (maybe a little karma there). My buddy told the guy he had two choices: he could either let him spin the hook through, or he could have one of my buddy's beers and head to the hospital. The cat went for the beer and the hospital.
Was able to go down for Fathers Day to the Russian, long story short had to wait for the reds to come up from the closed area but once they did boy oh boy! Fish on almost every cast! My son got his limit 30 min. before I did. Was home by 10:30! You just have to look for the schools! Worth the trip as I have not caught any kings at all!
Almost as many fishermen as reds at the Ferry Saturday, but looked like everybody catching fish. One very friendly brownie keeping everybody on their toes. Looks like reds from the lower Kenai to the Sanctuary.
One of the Daily News fishermen went down for the opener and reports back that the reds are waiting for you. He might of limited out instead of having to settle for two if he hadn't had to go to the hospital to get a hook removed from the back of his head.
Went down for a quick peek (not to fish) was extremely suprised to see a school of atleast 50 bonified reds near cottonwood hole..... reds are early this year possibly
