This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. A man accused of assaulting a woman with a weightlifting curling bar fled troopers overnight but has been arrested on a felony assault charge. See the dispatch out of Nondalton below.

Location: Ketchikan

Case number: 08-33724

Type: NVOL

Text: On 5-4-2008 at approximately 1157 hours, AST conducted a traffic
stop on a vehicle on Park Ave. Investigation revealed that the driver,
Jessica L Leighton age 31 of Ketchikan, was driving without a valid
license. Leighton was issued a summons and the vehicle was released to a
licensed driver.

Type: Arrest Warrant

Text: On 5-5-2008 at approximately 1315 hours, AST arrested Lawrence
Morrison age 21 of Ketchikan on a $15,000 warrant. The warrant was for
Failure to comply with conditions of release, original charge of Assault
III and Failure to Give Information at an Accident (injury). Morrison
was arrested at the Ketchikan Court house and was remanded at the
Ketchikan Correctional Center without incident.

Type: Warrant Arrest

Text: On 05/04/08 at about 1426 hours, Alaska State Troopers in
Ketchikan arrested Richard Finger, age 42, of Ketchikan on a $500.00
Sitka District Court Warrant. The original charge was DUI and Petition
to Revoke Probation. R. Finger was remanded to KCC with $500.00 bail.

Location: Wasilla
Case number: 08-34132
Type: DUI
Text: On 5/5/08 at approximately 2120 hours, State Troopers contacted
Georgina Stevens, age 33 of Palmer, while performing a traffic stop on a
1986 SAAB 9000S with an illegally modified exhaust system at Palmer
Wasilla Highway and 49th State Street, Palmer. Stevens was discovered to
be driving the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Stevens was
arrested for DUI and transported to Mat-Su Pretrial where she was
remanded into custody. Bail was set at $1,000 C/C.

Location: Palmer
Case number: 08-34136
Type: DWLR
Text: On 5/5/2008, at approx. 2215 hours, Alaska State Troopers
contacted 36 yoa Laurie L. Plyler of Wasilla when she arrived at the
scene of a DUI arrest to take possession of the now vacant vehicle.
Investigation revealed that Plyler drove to the scene in a green 1995
Grand Caravan while her driver's license is revoked. Plyler was issued
one USC for DWLR and released at the scene. The vehicle was released to
a licensed driver who later responded to the scene.

Location: Palmer

Case number: 08-34209

Type: MVA-I

Text: On 05-06-08 at approximately 0907 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a collision involving two vehicles on the Old Glenn Hwy at
the intersection with Ye Old River Road. Investigation at the scene
revealed David A. Mastej age 20 of Palmer, was driving his 1998 Ford
Ranger truck north on the Old Glenn Hwy, preparing to turn left onto Ye
Old River Road when his vehicle was struck on the driver's side by a
2003 Chevrolet Cavelier driven by Mitchel Shane Houser age 18, also of
Palmer. Witnesses told Troopers that Houser's vehicle was traveling
north on the Old Glenn Hwy at a high rate of speed and passed both
witness vehicles in a narrow section of the road prior to colliding with
Mastej's vehicle. Mastej reported wearing a seatbelt and reported no
injuries. His vehicle is estimated a total loss. Houser did not report
wearing a seatbelt and received a cut to one of his hands. Damages to
Houser's vehicle are estimated at $6000.00. Houser was issued the
following citations: Improper Overtaking on the Left, Failure to
Exercise Due Care to Avoid a Collision, and No Proof of Insurance.

Type: Assault IV

Text: On 5-6-08, at approximately 0900 hours, Troopers responded to a
Wasilla residence for a report of an assault. Investigation determined
Thomas Abrahamson, age 29 of Wasilla, assaulted a family member.
Abrahamson was arrested, transported and remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial
Facility and held without bail.

Location: Nondalton

Case number: 08-33721

Type: Domestic Violence Assault II
Text: On 05-03-08 at approximately 1815 hours, Alaska State Troopers
received a report of male that had assaulted a 24 year old female in
Nondalton. Troopers responded to Nondalton and the investigation
revealed that Russell L. Black, age 35 of Nondalton, had assaulted the
24 year old female with a weightlifting curling bar by placing it across
her neck, causing her to have difficulty breathing. Troopers attempted
to contact Black who evaded the attempts to contact him. Troopers
stayed overnight in the village and were unable to locate Black.
Information was received that Black may have left the village on foot by
traveling over Six-Mile Lake to Iliamna. Troopers were unable to locate
Black in Iliamna and requested an arrest warrant. On 05-05-08, an
arrest warrant was issued and Troopers returned to Nondalton where they
located Black in a residence. Black was arrested without incident and
transported to the Bristol Bay Police Department where he was remanded
on $10,000 cash bail. Further charges are pending.

Location: Kotlik

Case Number: 08-33982

Type: Vehicle Theft 2

Text:

On 05/05/08 at approximately 1000 hours the AST Post in Emmonak received
a report from Lori Mike, 41YOA of Kotlik, that her 2007 Ski-doo
snowmachine was stolen from her residence sometime after 3AM that same
morning. She identified two persons as possible suspects and stated that
they were possibly headed to Stebbins with the snowmachine.

The Stebbins VPSO was notified of the report and contacted the two
suspects after their arrival in Stebbins. One of the suspects was
identified as Rambo HUNT, 19YOA of Stebbins, and the other was a 17YOA
male, also of Stebbins. HUNT was taken into custody and charged with
Vehicle Theft 2. The 17YOA male was released to the custody of his
family. Charges will be referred to Juvenile Intake regarding the 17YOA
male. The snowmachine was recovered and returned to its rightful owners.

Type: Non DV Assault 4th degree

Text: On 5-5-06 a non DV assault in the 4th degree was reported to the
Alaska State Troopers, Aniak Post, the 18 year old male victim reported
that he had been assaulted by three older males. Alcohol was involved.
The investigation continues.

Case number: 08-34173

Type: Assault IV (Domestic Violence), Interfering with Reporting
Domestic Violence.

Text: On May 5, 2008, at approximately 2342 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a disturbance in Fairbanks. Investigation revealed that
Ryan Huber, 25 of Fairbanks, assaulted a family member. Further
investigation revealed that Huber tried to prevent the family member
from contacting the troopers to report the assault. Huber was remanded
to FCC on charges for assault and interfering with the report of
domestic violence.

Type: Assault IV, Domestic Violence x 2
Text: On 4-30-08 at approximately 1946 hours, Troopers responded to a
domestic disturbance at a Vosnesenka residence. As a result of Trooper
investigation, Dionicii Basargin, 25 yoa of Homer, was arrested for
Assault IV Domestic Violence x 2. He was transported to the Homer Jail
where he was remanded with no bail.

Case number: 08-33772
Type: Non arson fire
Text: On 5-5-08 at approximately 0730 hours, Troopers were notified of a
suspicious fire of a Cat D3G Bulldozer near mile 7 East End Road.
Troopers initially investigated the fire as a possible arson. However
investigation is showing a probable electrical fire within the
machinery. Total damage to the dozer was estimated at $50,000.00.
Troopers are continuing their investigation.

Location: Vosnesenka
Case number: 08-33941
Type: Assault III, Immediate Notice of an Accident
Text: On 5-5-08 at approximately 1555 hours, Troopers were notified of
an injury collision in the Kachemak Selo, that occurred on 4-27-08.
Trooper investigation revealed Ivan Kamis, 19 yoa of Oregon, was parked
on the beach near the Selo, when he backed over Anatoly Chaschin, 19 yoa
of Alberta Canada. Chaschin suffered a broken foot, and other non life
threatening injuries as a result of the collision. Alcohol is believed
to be a factor in the collision. Troopers are forwarding charges of
Assault III and Failure to Give Immediate Notice of an accident to the
Kenai District Attorney's Office for review.

Location: Nikolaevsk
Case number: 08-34119
Type: Natural Death
Text: On 5-6-08 at approximately 0420 hours, Troopers responded to a
death in Nikolaevsk. Trooper investigation revealed Kondraty Fefelov,
71 yoa of Nikolaevsk, had passed away in his sleep from natural causes.
Next of kin was present and no foul play is suspected. The State
Medical Examiner's office released Fefelov's body to the family for
village burial.

Type: Burglary I, Theft II, Criminal Mischief III
Text: On 5/2/08 at approximately 2228 hours, AST received a report of a
burglary at a residence located off of the Old Sterling Highway in
Anchor Point. Value of stolen property was estimated at over $500, and
the cost of damage to the property was estimated at over $500. This
case is currently under AST investigation.

Location: Soldotna

Case number: 08-33942

Type: Airplane Crash with Injury

Text: On 5/5/2008 at 16:08 hours, it was reported to Alaska State
Troopers in Soldotna that a small airplane crashed near a hanger
approximately 1 mile down Kenai River Rd. near Soldotna. The caller
advised the airplane lost control shortly after take off and crashed
into a hanger and a trailer. The sole occupant, James Hanson, age 73 of
Anchorage, was transported by Central Emergency Services to Central
Peninsula Hospital. On scene investigation revealed the aircraft had
struck a couple of tree tops prior to colliding with the trailer on the
property. The National Transportation Safety Board and FAA were
notified. Investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
