This is a new blog dedicated to the general topic of crime and crime prevention in Alaska. We are starting by posting the Alaska State Troopers' daily logs, our own crime-related stories and other relevant items as we come across them. The Daily News encourages community engagement and discussion of issues of crime and criminal justice. Comments are not edited and will be posted immediately. We know that stories about crime often provoke strong reactions, but we insist that you keep your comments on point, use good taste and show courtesy toward other writers. Friday's trooper dispatches

A child playing with a lighter lit a Wales house on fire and destroyed it. Responders were able to contain the fire, which threatened to spread through the village, to the home. See the dispatch below.

Location: Wasilla

Case number: 08-32971

Type: DV Criminal Mischief 3

Text: On 5-1-08 at 2245 hours AST in Palmer arrested Jan Soloy, age 55,
of Wasilla for DV Criminal Mischief 3 after it was reported by a family
member that she was ramming the family business with a vehicle.
Subsequent investigation revealed she ran a vehicle into the building 3
times causing approximately $5000.00 in damage to the building and
vehicle. Medical attention was not required for either party and Soloy
was subsequently transported to MatSu Pretrial Facility and held without
bail pending arraignment.

Type: Warrant Arrest

Text: On 5/1/08 at approximately 2315 hours, State Troopers contacted
Amber R. Mckinnon, age 24 of Palmer, at a residence off Clark Wolverine
Rd. in Palmer. Investigation revealed that Mckinnon had 3 outstanding
Arrest Warrants for Parole Violations. Mckinnon was arrested and
transported to Mat-Su Pretrial where she was remanded into custody.
Bail for the Arrest Warrants is $11,000.

Location: Wasilla
Case number: 08-32988
Type: DUI
Text: On 5/2/08 at approximately 0216 hours the AST South Central DUI
Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Stanley St.
and Tweed Ct. in Wasilla for a moving violation. The operator was
identified as Amber D. Sherwood, age 29, of Wasilla. Sherwood was found
to be operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and was
arrested for DUI. Sherwood was remanded to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility
where she was held until released to a sober adult third party.

Location: Noatak
Case number: 08-32976
Type: Assault III (x5), Reckless Endangerment (x3), DUI
Text: On 5/1/08, at 2230 hours, State Troopers in Kotzebue received a
report of an intoxicated adult male in the village of Noatak who had
pointed a rifle at several residents. A preliminary investigation
revealed that Gordon J. Wesley, 52 yoa, of Noatak was intoxicated and
started threatening community residents which included several
juveniles. Wesley began driving his Arctic Cat snow machine and nearly
collided with an adult male following a verbal altercation. Wesley then
returned to his residence and retrieved a rifle at which time he exited
his residence and aimed the rifle at five people, including a three year
old child. State Troopers responded to Noatak and contacted Wesley at
the airport where he arrived driving his snow machine. Gordon was
subsequently arrested for multiple counts of felony assault, reckless
endangerment and driving while intoxicated. Wesley was transported to
Kotzebue and remanded at the Kotzebue Regional Jail where he was held
without bail until his hearing the next day. Alcohol was involved with
this incident.

Text: On 5-2-08, the Alaska State Troopers in Bethel received a report
of a sexual assault of a minor child in the village of Nunapitchuk.
Investigation continues.

Location: Wales

Case number: 08-32923

Type: Fire Non-Arson

Text: On 5/1/08, at approximately 1727 hours, Peggy Olanna, 37 yoa of
Wales, contacted Nome AST to report a house fire. Olanna reported that
a house in the villages was engulfed in flames and that local volunteers
were unable to control the fire. Olanna advised that everyone was
concerned the fire would spread to nearby houses. AST responded to the
scene with 4 volunteer fire fighters/medics from the Nome Volunteer Fire
Department and Ambulance Department with equipment.

Wales's volunteers were able to contain the fire and no other structures
were damaged prior to the responder's arrival in Wales. Investigation
determined that the fire was the result of a young child playing with a
lighter that ignited a blanket which spread quickly. The structure was
completely destroyed. There were minor injuries reported such as smoke
inhalation, burns, as well as cuts and scratches.

Community members are reminded to keep matches and lighters out of reach
of small children and to talk with children about fire safety.

Type: Burglary, Theft

Text: On 4-24-08, at approximately 0920 hours, Unalakleet Troopers
responded to Elim for a report that someone(s) broke into the ANICA
store where approximately $4,800 dollars was stolen. Suspects were
developed and the investigation is still on going so no other
information will be provided at this time.

Any one with information pertaining to this case is asked to call
Trooper Kammer at the Unalakleet Trooper Post at (888)624-3073. ANICA
is offering a $1000.00 dollar reward for anyone that has information
about this case.

Type: SAM

Text: On 3-25-08, at approximately 0900 hours, while in Koyuk Unalakleet
Trooper received a report that a 12 year old female might have been
sexually assaulted while in Elim or Koyuk by unknown person. No other
information pertaining to this case will be released at this time as the
case is still under investigation.

Case number: 08-31268
Type: Assault IV, 2 counts
Text: On 4/26/08, at about 0326 hours, a 16 year old from Teller
reported Harvey Weyanna, age 21 of Teller was kicking a 20 year old
female. Harvey Weyanna was arrested for two counts of Assault IV and
transported to Nome where he was lodged with no bail. Further charges
pending the completion of the investigation.

Text: On 4/29/08 at approx. 1400 hrs Peter Ozenna, 25 yoa of Diomede,
was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for Assault IV Domestic
Violence and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Ozenna was
transported and lodged at AMCC.

Type: Assault IV DV

Text: On 4/30/08 at approx. 1430 hrs Clyde Ongtowasruk Jr. 23 yoa of
Wales was arrested for Assault IV DV, after the investigation revealed
that he got into an argument with his girlfriend, grabbed and bit her.
Ongtowasruk was transported and lodged at AMCC.

Location: Unalakleet

Case number: 08-32883

Type: VCR

Text: On 5-1-08, approximately 1450 hours, Unalakleet Troopers arrested
Ebba Sherman, 23yoa, of Unalakleet for being in violation of her
conditions of release by being out of 24 hour sight and sound of her
third party. Sherman was arrested and incarcerated at the Unalakleet
Police Department Holding Facility pending arraignment. Sherman was
arrested without incident and alcohol was not a factor.

Type: Disorderly Conduct =09

Text: On 5-1-2008, at 1731 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a call
reporting a disturbance at a Silverberry residence. A 17 y.o.a juvenile
was arrested for disorderly conduct and remanded to FYF.

Type: Misconduct Involving Controlled Substance VI Degree & Probation
Violation. =09

Text: On 5-1-2008, at 2143 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted
Christopher Eric Beisel, age 25 of Fairbanks, during a civil problem.
Investigation revealed that Beisel was in possession of marijuana and
alcohol. Beisel was arrested for misconduct involving controlled
substance VI degree and felony probation violation and remanded to FCC
without bail.

Type: Driving Under the Influence, Driving With a Suspended Operator's
License, & Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test. =09

Text: On 4-30-2008 at 2012 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a 911
call saying that Carol Joan Williams, age 42 of Fairbanks, was in the
complainants' house drunk and causing problems. It was also reported
that Williams then drove away from the scene. Troopers contacted
Williams and arrested her for driving under the influence, driving with
a suspended operator's license, & refusal to submit to a chemical test.
Williams was also cited for having an open container of alcohol in her
vehicle, and for failure to provide proof of insurance.

Type: DUI DWLR
Text: On 5/2/08 at 0159 hours, Alaska State DUI Enforcement Troopers
contacted Ronald E. Hinote, age 46 of Fairbanks during a traffic stop.
An investigation revealed Hinote was operating while under the influence
of alcohol as well as operating a motor vehicle while his license was
revoked. Hinote was taken into custody and remanded at FCC for DUI and
Driving While License Revoked.

Location: Cantwell

Case number: 08-32936

Type: Motor Vehicle Crash - Commercial Motor Vehicle (Damage)

Text: On 05-01-08 at approximately 2030 hours, Troopers were dispatched
to mile 177 of the Parks Highway for the report of a commercial motor
vehicle in the ditch. The driver, Jeffery WINEGARDEN, 40 of Kenai, was
operating a 1999 Kenworth north on the Parks Highway pulling a load of
refrigerated methane. WINEGARDEN drove into the opposite lane, and came
to rest in the southbound ditch. Nobody was injured in the incident,
and WINEGARDEN was reportedly wearing his seatbelt. WINEGARDEN was
issued a citation for Driving While Ill or Fatigued. The vehicle and
load had to be removed from the ditch with specialty equipment.
Investigation complete.

Case number: 08-33026

Type: Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree

Text: On 05-02-08 at approximately 0755 hours, a resident of Clear
reported that somebody intentionally broke his U.S. Mail post office box
and a newspaper box near his residence. Damage is estimated at $300.
The investigation is on-going.
