These comments highly offended me as well. Any man that would say something like this about any woman deserves to be embarrassed and fired. But what I have found living here in AK- in the bush for 8 years and on the road system is that most native women and children are abused by native men, why? or how dare I? you ask...because most still live in remote areas within villages where white people are the minority. I worked in the school systems out there and I know, I've seen and dealt with it. So while I agree that Woody and Wilcox are white sexist racists that should be fired-it never ceases to amaze me that all white peole have to be blamed for every dumb idiot or injustice out there, and that just being white makes me responsible for idiots like woody and wilcox. That is inexcusable-how about this-Does just being a native person make you responsible for the rape and murder of a small native girl in a native village, by a native man ( a relative) who then hid her body in the village dump? Of course not! I am sick of the racists calling me racist just because i have white skin. I am sick of the fact that I am supposed to apologize for being a white person.
Hear me, I grew up in a muti-cultural area, had friends of many races, but I have never in my life heard so many racist comments until I moved to Alaska from Detroit (that's right! Alaska's native population has shown my family more racism than I ever experienced in detroit). Tell me woody and wilcox are racist pigs who should get fired, but dont try to sell me the story that the native women and children who are raped in alaska are predominanlty raped by white men, cause it just aint so!

Sheesh, Julie even quoted Amnesty International as they blamed violence against indigenous women on a "number of factors"...
shockingly, none of the factors listed were "the telling of jokes on silly morning radio shows".

One can only imagine the look on a young Native girl when she asks "what does that mean?" and is told, "it's a dumb joke. These guys make fun of everyone."

Hey, then maybe she'd smile and feel okay about herself! But no, let's brainwash her to think she is destined to be forever oppressed by the white devil, right?

Grow up. If you're really that upset about violence against Native women, there are far more productive uses of your energy than whining about morning radio shows. But then you might not get your name in the paper, right?

I am an Alaska Native woman who grew up in Alaska rural villages and proud of it. Alaska Natives take great pride in our culture, language, and the way of life and to hear what happen in Anchorage bugs the daily lights out of me. I am a very educate Alaska Native Women with a degree in Paralegal and pursing another one in Business through the University of Alaska. I feel these duo idiots need to go back to where they belong to and please take your ideology with you.

What part do you not understand, the words they used is hateful and uncalled for, if this happens to Alaska Native Women, you might wake up and look in the mirror because this can happen to you in the future. It always starts with natives but at the end, it ends with you.

Change the station

Why is the Mommy listening to this type of radio broadcast with her small child? I have never listened to this radio station but I also as a parent "Censor" the radio or tv channels my children listen to. Parents need to accept responsibility for their children. Shame on the radio announcers for not having more class but CHANGE THE STATION don't listen.

When it comes to matters of social poison, "don't like 'em? don't listen" is not good enough. I think it's actually a good thing when horrid things like this find the public light of day, because it allows people to realize what creepyness exists in our community. However, without an outcry of public objection, and measures to set things right, comments like the one in question can imply social acceptance and encourage more steps down a sick road. Freedom of speech is necessary, but just as yelling fire in a crowded theater is not legal, it is not alright to make vulgar jokes about a group of people that is already suffering degradation in our fair city.

They meet the definition of porn -- no redeeming social value. They are employed by the radio stations for one reason only -- to make money. The sponsors advertise on their shows for one reason only -- to make money for their companies. They are all about one thing -- making money. The fact that they hurt people, offend people, drag down our values, cheapen our communities, desensitize and pollute our young men (the greatest listening demographic) is meaningless. It's all about the buck. The government is completely asleep at the wheel on this. If the FCC does anything at all it will be a negligible fine in no way proportionate to the offense which Clear Channel can painlessly pay from their fat coffers and then it will be back to business as usual. And I can promise you that, human nature being what it is, the promised "sensitivity training" will have an impact on its students for all of about 3 months.

Get a grip? That's not a joke, it's vulgar insult. Believe it or not, there is a difference. There will always be a small number of followers for idiots like the DJs in this story - people who can only feel better by belittling others. Down here we call them rednecks. They're racist, sexist, and stupid. They're also (more often than not) an uneducated lot. It's a bottom feeding audience that finds that sort of statement amusing. Material like that doesn't belong on local stations - put it on XM or Sirrius where the dregs like Howard Stern are found. It's no different than smut on tv - you're free to partake, but the general public shouldn't have to tolerate it. Kids don't need to hear backwards drivel like that if they're cruising stations. By the way, if any of you folks have a problem with natives...you can always leave THEIR land and go back where you came from. You weren't invited.

Vulgar

Vulgarity with this radio station is why I choose not to listen to it. What most don't realize is that all humans of any race is always at the brunt end of comments. Women have been at the end of this stick since the dawn of time. Take, blondes, which I am, and I have heard more blonde jokes, to my face, than I care to imagine or even remember. They are stupid and uncooth. However, most human speicies are just that when allowed to express silly thoughts. Bottom line is sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Maybe folks needs to remember this gradeschool playground statement.

Or better yet, just change the channel and never go back. Very simple resolve to the problem. Ratings goes down, sponsors go away, radio station done. Very easy thing to do. If we all played this silly game none of us would be working, but beating a drum/pot/can etc and not foucsing on the issues at hand, and that is survival of the fittess. What does not kill us makes us stronger.

These guys are trying to re-live thier childhood and get paid for doing it. They are as low as the gradeschoolers, why give them the responce that they so desire? Basically, get over it, I am sorry that a, or the, native women of Alaska are offended, as I have been throughout my life, but we have ALL been there, done that, you are not alone at the end of the stick, so move on. This reminds me of the drauma that my 13 year old loves to get mixed up in, very childesh. Enough said.

is it not obvious that these guys were trying to tell the joke below but that they screwed it up royally? Doesn't it seem clear that the most likely explanation is that they remembered that the joke hinged on changing the order of the axiom of what it took to be a sourdough but that they (tragically) screwed up which parts of the axiom to switch? Can anybody tell me what it would even mean to "pee in a native woman"? Has anyone ever heard an expression like this before? The joke below is real. I heard it when I was a kid. The expression they used is not real. I've never heard it in my life. But that doesn't make them angry, racist, masochistic a-holes. It makes them idiots who don't know how to tell a joke. We already knew that about them. It's not new information. And if you really want to get upset, go after Bob and Mark for their Native Joe skits. Those are far more offensive than this stupid slip.

That scenario isn't the same as the radio thing. Degrading someone personally may well be cruel or vulgar or wrong, but its logically different from demeaning a race. When you demean a race or a group of people you're ascribing characteristics to people you know nothing about. Like if I said "Asians are mean," I don't really know that because I haven't observed the behavior of every Asian on the planet to determine this. But you could say "Frank is mean" if you really have observed them and believe this to be true. Now, calling Lyda a b--- on the radio, thats terrible. Even if you think its true, its wrong. But I just had to point out that its not analogous to the radio thing because Lyda is an individual. I'm sure you could come up with some other example though of white people generalizations (the blonde jokes, or lawyer jokes, Norwegian jokes, or whatever) that are offensive and yet tolerated, which is what you were aiming for I think.

Brutalizing degradation on local radio station in Alaska

Dear ADN,

I guess there's a time for everything, including a time to speak up. Alaskans, all of us, have a voice in establishing community standards of propriety, to cut our own trail. Regardless of what is prevalent and accepted elsewhere, I believe we, as a relatively young state, can define limits on a variety of issues that will shape our culture in the decades ahead. It's up to us to shape our own destiny and the kind of place we want for generations to come. I believe we will best do so by informing ourselves, considering the past, the successes and mistakes of others.

My background and concerns: I am 55 years old, grew up in the South, and used to pass by KKK gatherings in an era when hate and humor mixed in some circles. We as a country have come so far since then. I've been proud of that record of progress and served my military career believing in what we were doing. I still do. I don't write letters of any kind often, but I am writing to you now out of concern. The repulsive remarks made by these two local radio hosts and their employers' pallid response are regressive and below our community standard of decency. In my opinion, KBFX and its owners, Clear Channel Communications, have a responsibility to participate more constructively informing and educating Alaskans. We can do better - aim higher and our children should make it worth doing so.

It's a challenge worth responding to. It's up to each individual, or maybe groups of us, to respond thoughtfully and appropriately. I noticed that KBFX's website is supported by the U.S. Army, advertising funded I presume by US taxpayer dollars. The slogans "U.S. Army" and "Army Strong" are banner highlights greeting the web page viewer when opening the KBFX website, an effect they no doubt sought before this debacle. In response, I have sent an inquiry to the Army hoping they will review their support of KBFX. I have also requested a list of current KBFX advertisers from the station.

As a citizen, as an Alaska physician, as a retired military officer and as a father, I find these remarks beneath our community standards for decency and below what most careful people would want for this state. I believe such remarks on public airwaves denigrate our values of human worth, to say nothing of erosion of fundamental rights and higher human sensibilities. I propose that the U.S. Army's funding support of such activity is beneath the U. S. Army and that the DJ's responsible be allowed to find another line of work, or at least given the opportunity to ply their trade in the Lower-48, where there's plenty of like-minded competition.

Dr. Gurley, if you post a list of Clear Channel advertisers, I'll help spread the word (nationwide) that some Alaskans demand respect for Alaska's own. The stock in trade of shock jocks is to daily diminish the civil discourse and desensitize the nation through endless denigration of those having no opportunity to respond. To titillate their listeners, they have long ago pushed beyond any envelope marked "Good Taste". It's one thing to make a living by catering to people's most base instincts to capture the audience of those who are (astonishingly) easily amused. When you reduce women in general, and a race of women in particular, to candidate receptacles for human waste then you have entered the dark, dark world of emotional violence. Whether those non-female and non-Native posters here can comprehend the difference or not makes no difference. Physical wounds can often heal, emotional wounds persist.

You can have your 100%, not interested. Your own culture until the 1940's condoned the practice of families "shacking up" for the long cold winters and it was anyone's guess whom the father of any offspring were. When a couple from the village goes to play bingo for the night and leaves their 2 year old son alone in the house next to the Deshka river and he drowns because he has been left for 6 hours, the parents claim remorse and are left to breed more children that they will ignore. No charges are filed because of your culture, and that is the "native way"
Enough I say.
You want to live like your culture? Then get the hell off the internet and go back to the land. Your SEASONAL traditional village is being eroded by sea surges? Then move. Your damn ancestor's were smart enough not to live their year round and left of there own accord, why in the hell are you looking for someone to finance your move?
Your village needs to be relocated? Why in the hell is the evil white man government giving you one million dollars per house to move when the cost of building a new house would only be around $200,000 a piece. These are not traditional or historical houses we are talking of moving, this is just standard 4 wall and a roof houses.
You complain about your dental care in your villages, but your mothers are feeding their children soda because that is all they want. Here's a novel idea, quit buying the soda, then they can't drink it.
You want the govenrment to pay for your traditional lifestyle and want your heating oil costs to go down because it is too much work to chop wood to heat your house.
You claim subsistance yet you can sell your subsistance to the Japanese marktet for cash. Odd because for everyone else subsistence means eating what they take, not making a profit on it and using the money to buy a new snowmachine.
