It’s called “Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment Upside Down.”

The first chapter is called, “Growing Up Sarah.” It starts by saying that honesty became a non-negotiable standard in her family and that there was an expectation that if you wanted something, you earned it.
The chapter ends by saying people kept criticizing Sarah as she made her mark on politics, saying she was too young, inexperienced and naïve.
“Yet, time after time over the years, underestimating Sarah always turned out to be a big mistake,” it concludes.

Alaska Political Corruption - "Dirty Little Secrets"
Alaska's 1994 gubernatorial election affirmed the scope and depth Alaska's political corruption.
Tony Knowles prevailed by 536 votes as our new governor.
The North Slope Borough gave 10 gallons of gas to each voter.
Doyon shareholders received post card "Vote .... win $1000."
This election malconduct gave Tony Knowles the election.
The political corruption affected over 10,000 Alaska voters.
Easily enough votes to change the result of the 1994 election.
Senator Ted Stevens, Senator Frank Murkowski and Congressman Don Young ignored the political corruption. Why?
Their failure to take a stand condoned and supported Alaska's politically corrupt conduct.
Jim Campbell, the loosing Republican candidate, was "scared to death" when he was informed a 5 page letter was delivered to the FBI defining the details of Alaska's political corruption.
Jim Campbell "wanted no part of contacting the FBI." Why?
His failure to act endorsed Alaska's corrupt election conduct.
The US Attorney for Alaska "chose to ignore" the corruption. He also received a copy of the 5 page letter.
Why was the 5 page letter ignored by the US Attorney?
Dr. Larry J. Sabato, the University of Virginia nationally recognized political scientist and election analyst, addressed the 1994 Alaska political corruption in his 1996 treatise "Dirty Little Secrets ... The Persistence of Corruption in American Politics."
Present Republican Party Chair Randy Ruedrich was working for a Doyon company in 1994.
The FBI, including Director Bob Mueller, and other dedicated agents have been aware of Alaska's political corruption for years.
The FBI's investigation of Alaska's political corruption is redefining how business in done in Juneau and Washington DC by Alaska's elected "public servants."
Governor Sarah Palin, as the then Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, identified and defined ongoing political corruption by Republican Party Chair Randy Ruedrich.
Governor Frank Murkowski, Chief of Staff Jim Clark and our Attorney General refused to address the obvious political corruption identified by then Commission Chair Sarah Palin.
"Their Ethics Supervisor" and now lobbyist also "refused to address" the corrupt conduct. His conduct was unconscionable.
Sarah Palin resigned as Chair AOGCC after the "good old boys corrupt political network" ... Governor, Chief of Staff, and AG failed to address Randy Ruedrich's corrupt conduct.
These "servants of all Alaskans" were on a "trip of their own."
Governor Murkowski at the time of Sarah Palin's resignation had a high approval rating ... and Chief of Staff Jim Clark was the "Governor's bully" attacking the media for their "alleged" bad conduct.
Governor Sarah Palin by taking a public stand for ethics and against corruption ... reaffirmed conduct the FBI was working on for years in Alaska.
Any individuals who are always "seeking public attention" regarding Alaska's political corruption are not "assisting" the FBI.
Every Alaskan should be very proud of Governor Sarah Palin taking a stand against Alaska's vast political corruption.
Governor Sarah Palin confirmed the credibility of the FBI's investigation by resigning as Chair of the AGOCC due to Randy Ruedrich's corrupt conduct.
FBI professionalism is redefining the ethics, integrity and honor of Alaska politics.
Governor Sarah Palin's actions affirm the FBI's investigation.

And what about Palin bilking Wasilla taxpayers
By using public offices and staff to send out e-mails and/or other invitations to her fundraisers. When "caught" during her campaign, and confirmed by her former secretary, she said, "I'm sorry." However, she doesn't seem to let others who transgress have the same ability to apologize and move on.
Before someone says, oh, it was just a few hours, probably didn't amount to more than a $1,000 of her time and that of the staff, plus use of public computers (same act for which she accused Ruedrich of malfeasance), it's not a matter of quantity, or how much you steal. Just like pregnancy, either you are honest, or you are not.
I agree with one statement: it is the FBI which is reinstating honor and integrity to Alaska politics- with respect to the very few who are dishonest. Most already have integrity, honor, and ethics, and shouldn't be painted with the Palin/Shea brush.

Palin "I'm sorry" is not a real apology
Palin never said she was sorry for using the Wasilla mayor's office to campaign out of for Lt. Governor. What she said was she was sorry if people felt offended by her use of the Wasilla mayor's office for campaign purposes. There are many people who participated in campaign strategy meetings in her Wasilla office for her to deny it. I guess unethical behavior is OK if she's the one doing it. That's honest, open, ethical Palin for you.

Perhaps,
in light of recent developments in Seattle North, use of e-mail from any government office ought to be prohibited. Or subject to close inspection before being sent or read by the intended (government employed) recipient. That poses a certain ethical dilemma, however. It's like having censorship to keep the public from seeing "dirty" movies because it corrupts them. Any censor, therefore, might function for one production but could not thereafter be trusted to judge another, having been corrupted by the first.

Despite
all the hopes, the FBI political corruption unit seems to have moved on. Or some who thought their tickets were for AK were, instead, for AL. They might have found more fertile ground in AR but that ground was plowed once and the plowing covered more than it brought to the surface.

It ain't over yet
There's been more than one grand jury in more than one state dealing with alleged malfeasance, from VECO to fisheries to other subjects.
No news is not necessarily good news (for the future indictees). It's just that the US Attorneys and FBI agents involved are doing their jobs- quietly.

Look: It's not that Sarah hasn't done a lot for Alaska in her first sixteen months in office. I can't think of any other political figure from our State who has illicited so much interest outside our fair borders. Not that interest alone does much - but hopefully she'll / we'll be able to capitalize on it and see a gas line become reality. Somehow, someway.
But let's be honest - Sarah did precious little to turn the State's political establishment upside down. So she beat the most unpopular governor in the whole frickin' Union (sorry, couldn't resist). Hello. Frank's positives were in the single digits. It was a surprise to anyone that she beat him? The news to me was that she so handily beat John Binkley -and, no, he wasn't the "political establishment."
Less than half the "political establishment" at the Repub State Convention last month stood to join in her call for new leadership at the top of the party. This isn't turning something upside down.
To me, when the day is done, the most noteworthy item about Sarah's first year and a half in office will be the almost free pass she has enjoyed by the ADN and KTUU; along with the fact that a 21 year old college blogger in Colorado single handedly worked night and day to have her considered as a VP contender. These are the things I find most intriguing about her tenure so far.
But let's give a little credit to our hard working friends at the FBI who are the ones that have turned the political establishment upside down here in Alaska. What's wrong with giving credit to whom credit is due? They've done all the unsavory leg work. FBI: Thank you for doing what apparently we as Alaskans couldn't or wouldn't do ourselves - monitor our political leaders.
(Sidenote - is this the long awaited book whose original title was going to be Valley Girl? Or is that another writing project still in the works?)

1. Ear says the book contains a college pic of SP wearing a "I'm not flat busted" tshirt. So, who gave the publisher this picture? Did the Palin family provide it? It appears the family cooperated. If so, it certainly works to perpetuate the "hottie" image that Palin says is so "embarassing." Serious politicos try to keep those pics hidden away.... not our gal. (giggle)
2. Interesting that her formative years were shaped by physicality and competition... instead of intellectual pursuits. A poster on AH once stated that Sarah brings the "trash talking and sharp elbows" mentality to politics --- instead of diplomacy and leadership, due to her sports-emphasis upbringing. Her little sis says she always read the paper/books. Woopdedoo. Tell me who wasn't reading voraciously while living in bush Alaska in 1979?
3. Thought M/M Heath came across as the most interesting people in the first chapter. A book about their adventures would at least be somewhat entertaining and probably, less contrived.

How studious can you be if it takes you 5 years to complete a journalism degree? My comm/journalism friends slept through their classes and still managed to finish in 4.
I'm sure Palin secretly likes the "hottie" image and her comments are a vague attempt to downplay it. She's truly narcissistic, and narcissists love the attention. Let's face it, if she looked more like Frank's sister she wouldn't be getting near the attention she has received. People fawn over her for her looks and really don't care about her brains, experience, her verbiage, etc. As long as her spectacles match her outfit, who cares? Right?

Ray Metcalfe, Rich Mauer,& Stephen Taufen-Superheros
These three guys are the major head hunters for cleaning up Alaskan politics. The DOJ/FBI needed help in fleshing things out, without these guys it might not have happened.
The US AGs for AK before Cohen were probably crooked and protected TED/BEN & FRANK, but it will all come out in the wash.
Wev Shea could probably add to this, but lets give Sarah's book a look first before we discount her helping hand.
The book might even be as interesting as Jay Hammond's stories of the Bushrat Governor.
So she smoked pot, that doesn't make her evil. A lot of American and Alaskans drink way too much, and it's legal.
I see many of the same bloggers trying to tear at Sarah, but hey that's all you've got left after worshiping the O'mighty dollar of Earmarks and TED "The Traitor" Stevens.
Hockey moms rock in AK, they can even be the Gov, and have another child. Right on!
Keep fighting to take back our fisheries for Alaska! Next we need that Accountability and Transparency board to value our resources.....

You are right about Metcalfe, Mauer, and Taufen but...
Don't add Patriot Act US Attorney Nelson Cohen into the "rooting out corruption" list. I have proof he ignored a federal felony in order to win a federal civil case he is handling. Rumor at the Democrat Judiciary Committee is that he may not be nominated by Bush for the job permanently. Bush has to be very careful who he nominates...the Democratic Senators have promised some very interesting questions of the whole group of Patriot Act US Attorney's. Of which Cohen is one.
Like is it true you had to take a "Bushie loyalty oath"....their words. Over an oath to the US Constitution.
I have been following Cohen since he was appointed under the Patriot Act in August 2006. Over Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski's objections. Read Richard Mauer's story on Cohen....Lisa found out by being paged that the woman she wanted, Deborah Smith, was being replaced. Read Nelson Cohen's appointment press release (Corporate Crime Reporter still has a PDF up). The FEDGOV did the best they could to cloud the truth by saying Smith couldn't stay on after 210 days without confirmation but Cohen could. Gonzales COULD have appointed Smith. Why was Cohen wanted here? The Public Integrity Section is handling the politicians trials. Cohen hasn't indicted any.
Then this past October when the Democrats corrected the Patriot Act Chief Judge John Sedwick appointed him in as much secret as possible. Did anyone see a story in ADN about Cohen's re-appointment? Despite the order appointing a US Attorney being public property by law this federal courthouse made the info as hard as possible to obtain. Nelson Cohen's secretary finally admitted it on the phone and then added "please don't print this". Why? Cohen not proud of the fact he can't seem to be able to make it to full US Senate confirmation?
Better yet, where was Ted Stevens and Lisa? Why didn't they stamp their feet for the front page again?
In a justice department that was run by Bush like his own private lawteam with Consigliere Abu Gonzales at the helm, expecting JUSTICE out of ANY of them is delusional.
I have a $500 reward up on our website, MakeTheArmyHonest (dot) Com for the first person that can help Mr. Cohen do the job a US Attorney should be doing but he can't seem to muster the moral fortitude to do. Check out the 100% service connected disabled letter from the VA on the front page. That is the man that was assaulted by an over six foot tall thug in order to disrupt the civil lawsuit he has. Nelson Cohen's reaction? To have his second Gary Guarino call our lawyer to say oh yeah....we know about the "incident" but choose to do nothing.
A group of emails telling that same disabled vet and I to "look in the backseat of the car before getting in" and veiled threat about how a bullet enters the brain were dismissed US Attorney Karen Loeffler as let's pass the buck and bury it. By the way the guy that assaulted us has either a Secret or Top Secret clearance. Was that suspended? No.
Google my name and what is the first two items to come up? Where the same individual impersonates me by name on TPM and other boards, has written to the US Senate Judiciary Committee posing as me,etc. All condoned by our US Attorney for Alaska Nelson Cohen.
This is not the US Attorney Alaska deserves. We deserve a man (or woman) who takes their oath to heart. Someone who will put what is right and just above winning a case that will put brownie points in their personnel file. The person of integrity that will clean up Alaska is not Nelson Cohen.
P.S. I am sure Wev will come along and say I don't have the right to talk this way about Cohen and Sedwick as he has on the stories about Kohring/Sedwick.
Until you pull up the facts in John Mitchell's case and hit me fact for fact Wev, smacking my hand won't work.

Palin did not turn the Alaska political establishment upside down. The FBI did. Granted, she did take on Frank Murkowski, and took him down. Given his 19% popularity rating, it was not a surprise that someone would beat him- and she did a good job at it, and deserves credit for her effort. However, she should not even pretend to take credit for the indictments past and future, for which- like many Alaskans- she was nothing but a cheerleader from the sidelines.
In sum, she beat an incumbent governor, the FBI took a number of legislators out. Most of the Alaska political establishment is the same as it was- honest and hardworking.
To the book: "The first chapter is called, “Growing Up Sarah.” It starts by saying that honesty became a non-negotiable standard in her family."
So, Wev and others, what does the book say about smoking pot? What does it say about her elopement (purportedly because her parents- teachers whose income was more than many Alaskans- couldn't afford a wedding)? In fact, what does the book say about "hockey camp" in Michigan- when Alaska has great hockey programs. Is the truth really being told? Has honesty in fact become negotiable?
There are basically two types of biographies of political families. One is the Ronald Reagan version, where there is a pretense of everything being wonderful, white picket fences, and so on. And then there is the Betty Ford version, which is candid and admits that even families of Presidents have their share of challenges.
The former turns out to be a work of fiction and pretense. The latter turns out to be an inspiration, its principals serving as role models.

Honesty was indeed a negotiable item: “We had a pact,” Heather said. “If any of us got hurt, or if we broke something, we promised not to tell.” (Page 19) Guess they define honesty in different terms than most. And friggin' Sara's been lying since.

Interesting how "honesty"
became a sort of fixation in the Governor's vocabulary at an early age.
It's not uncommon for a young child or perhaps an older person of limited intelligence to hear a word that fascinates and then proceed to over-work it as we observe in the comment that focused my attention upon the matter. A constant repetition of a term, many times a pejorative, in hope of gaining attention. The underlying reason, psychologists agree, is an attempt at retention. Fearing that failing to repeatedly pronounce, or write, the word at question will result in it being forgotten. Some have observed this represents a linkage between the various personalities manifest in a schizoid mind. Each of the several identities becomes attached to the same word and repeatedly uses it even though there is no other apparent communication between the entities.
Yes, there are certain parallels to be observed here.....

"Apathy Rules" was not repetition of a word or phrase that somebody else uttered. It was an original expression and one which needs re-introduction from time-to-time. The Konstantly Kvetching Khorus yet fails to take any action that might suggest they are anything other than filled with blind, jealous hatred. Word is circulating that photos of the alleged group (Personally I believe there is only one; schizoid, perhaps but still only one) are being circulated in Juneau. Thing is, they seem to be of a certain defeated girl's basketball team that still hasn't gotten over the loss.
Perhaps no so much "bearing" a grudge as "cherishing" one!
Not that there's anything wrong with that......
