Credit where it's due

I wrote an editorial that ran Tuesday that neglected to mention Rep. Bob Lynn is a prime cosponsor of House Bill 287, which would have the state pull its investments in companies doing business with Sudan. Rep. Lynn and colleague Les Gara want the state to use the power of its millions to take a stand against the genocide in Darfur, in western Sudan.

Reps. Lynn, Gara and some other House members who have signed on have the right idea. Alaska divestment would fortify, in small measure, the painfully slow international drive against the misery in Darfur. Put enough small measures together and you might make a difference.

The bottom line cannot not rule all. Rep. Lynn, a conservative Republican, and Rep. Gara, a liberal Democrat, understand that.

Why aren't others like Bob Lynn?

Rep. Lynn proves once again that he is a man of vision, integrity and strong moral fiber. Why don't we have more like him in our legislature? Alaskans are, by and large, a moral and decent people. I suspect many upstanding people avoid public office so they are not splattered by the same stench they see affecting others. My hat is off to Rep. Lynn for being willing to get down in the trenches and speak out for us.
