This is the place to talk about Alaska politics, state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier has never been more interesting -- Sarah Palin, a new governor, a new Anchorage mayor, the political corruption investigation, the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. We encourage lively debate, but please keep it civil and stay on point. Don't use profanity, make crude comments or attack other posters. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. Repeat offenders will lose their ability to post comments.

From David Hulen, ADN state/local news editor, in Anchorage:
It's less than a week to the Alaska presidential caucuses (actually, the Republicans are calling theirs a "preference vote," with participants voting on printed ballots instead of the move-around-the-room caucus style of the Democrats). It should be big fun. The nominations in both parties are still an open question. And with the Alaska proceedings now on Super Tuesday with 23 other states, participants here will be in the thick of things nationally in a way they haven't always been in the past.
One of Mitt Romney's sons, Josh, will be in Alaska Thursday and Friday. He will meet with supporters in Anchorage and Fairbanks, have a press conference with Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell (chairman of Romney's Alaska campaign) and hit a class at UAA.
Parnell introduces Romney in a new Alaska-specific Internet commercial. The candidate says he's impressed with Alaskans' "rugged character" and talks up Second Amendment rights and his support for ANWR drilling and the gas line.
We've heard commercials for Barack Obama and Ron Paul in recent days on local radio. Are there others?
Are you planning to participate in the caucuses? Who are you planning to vote for? Why? (We'd like to run an assortment of comments in the print newspaper; please put your name with your comments if you're interested in having them published there.)
Still undecided? Check out glassbooth.org, a site that's getting a lot of media buzz. You answer a set of issue questions and it tells you which candidates your views line up most closely with.
Here's a an explainer we've been running about how both parties' proceedings will work. We'll have a longer package Sunday in print and online. You can find more info, including locations and times, on the state Republicans' and Democrats' Web sites.
Only voters registered in each party can participate - in other words, only registered Republicans can fill out a ballot at a GOP preference vote, and the same with the Democrats, although voters will be allowed to change their registrations at the door. In a state where most voters are registered as non-partisan, how much do you think will that limit participation?

He's the one major candidate who took Alaska seriously from the start, paying staff in Alaska for months and advertising in our media market. Being from Hawaii originally, he understands what it's like for states "outside" the lower 48.
He's not just right for Alaska, but for America. He's got a brilliant mind and solid policy proposals, yet he's anything but boring to listen to. He's been right about every major issue of our time, even when most others were wrong. And he offers a refreshing change of tone in Washington, a practical, hard-working, get-it-done attitude rather than partisan point-scoring games.

Alaska Democrats: Vote "Uncommitted"
It's Good for Alaskans. It's Good for Alaska's future.
Alaskan Democrats: stand up and be counted. As we approach fifty years of statehood, it is sad to note that not once has a candidate for president campaigned in Alaska. Ever. This means that the needs of our Great Land don't figure into the national debate. This means that to the candidates running for President, our Alaskan hopes and dreams simply aren't as important as those of Iowans or Californians.
Alaskans, it's time for change. Voting 'Uncommitted' this evening is a vote for a strong Alaska. Your 'Uncommitted' vote will send a delegation to the National Democratic Convention that can extract promises from the Democratic nominee for President. Like a promise to campaign here in Alaska. Let 2008 be the year that the Democratic nominee for President shook hands down on 4th Avenue and tried to hook a salmon on Ship Creek.
Make Alaska Matter: VOTE UNCOMMITTED

is like changing an old, dirty diaper that has been on the White House and Congress for over eight years, full and flowing down Capitol Hill. As an Alaskan and a taxpayer, I ain't buying that ess anymore. And that's no bee ess. Take that dirty diaper off, clean that ess up, then wash your hands of every one of them who made us eat it, live like it, feel like it, look like it and take their felonious follies of fecal flow and trickle down tawdriness. Then take those old diapers, dunk, flush and hang them out to dry and choose someone who can go like a big boy. Instead of shoveling that same old ess, go to the voting booth and don't take that ess anymore from those who are full of it. Now THAT is change. Barack the Vote!

WHAT KIND OF CONSERVATIVE ARE YOU?
Neoconservatism emerged in the United States from the Left's rejection of social liberalism and counter-culture of the 1960s. The development of this new conservatism (neoconservatism) is based on the writings of Irving Kristol, the co-founder of Encounter magazine and Norman Podhoretz, who were the first to describe themselves as "neoconservatives" during the Cold War.
Their writings influenced George H. W. Bush, and the George W. Bush presidential administrations, and culminated in a re-alignment in American politics, which resulted in the defection of socially conservative Democrats to the Republican party during the 90s.
What seperates neoconservatives like Bush, Romney, Giuliani, McCain, and especially Mike Huckabee who is a Neocon on steroids, from traditional conservatives like Ron Paul or Pat Buchanan, is that they do not feel any alarm or anxiety about the promoting the growth of the federal government, seeing it as both natural and inevitable.
Traditional conservatives have always promoted limited federal government and sovereignty of our States. Whereas, neocons promote federalization and centralization of power, working continuously to usurp power from the States.
Neocons are also bent on using the government to enforce morality even though history shows that these afflictions cannot be cured by politicians.
Traditional conservatives believe that since human nature is limited and finite, any attempt to create a man-made utopia is headed for disaster and potential carnage. They see neoconservative ideologies ragarding the creation of a social democracy and a managerial society (a Nanny State) as malevolent attempts to remake humanity. Traditional conservatives lean toward tradition, family, customs, religious institutions and classical learning to provide social wisdom and moral guidance -- not the federal government.
Most neoconservatives are heavily influenced by the globalist (one world government) ideals of groups such as the Council on Foreign Relations. At last count, there were more than 200 members of the CFR in the Bush administration. Mike Huckabee's foreign policy advisor is Richard Haass, who is currently the President of the CFR.
Speech: Richard Haass' Globalist Manefesto
Traditional conservatives believe in the absolute, unconditional sovereignty of a free and independent United States, rejecting any and all attemps by any foreign bodies to rule over us, such as the United Nations, ICC, NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and CAFTA, all of which transfer power from our government to unelected foreign elites.
Neocons embrace an expansionist foreign policy. Whereas, traditional conservatives see themselves as defenders of the Republic, pointing to the downfall of Rome as an example of how an ongoing campaign of military expansionism can destroy a Republic.
Neoconservatives believe we should supplant the traditions of other societies with our own. They see themselves as on the side of "right" and fighting evil without respecting or looking for common ground with countries that do not share our democratic preferences.
Traditional conservatives deny the existence of a universal political and economic model that is suitable for all societies and cultures. Instead, they believe that another country's political institutions should be adjusted to suit its own culture and heritage.
The neoconservative's imperialistic foreign policy runs so counter to American's tradition that it must remain a foreign policy that dare not speak its name. Only through stealth and the endless "War on Terror" jingohism that's being propagandized to an emergency-managed and willfuly-gullible public can the United States continue to pursue the imperialistic reality that is our current foreign policy.
Traditional conservatives believe that imperialism should be delegitimized in the light of open and honest, public discourse. The "War on Terror" can never be won because it not a war on a clearly-defined enemy -- a country or a people, it's a war on a tactic. Terrorism is a tactic that will always be used by extremists no matter what we do. Therefore, the "War on Terror," is nothing less than what Bush so biblically calls "the war that will never end." Nor will, I suspect, the recent abridgements to our constitutional liberties, which were sold to us as "temporary" but "necessary measures" to fight their war.
Renowned conservative and former GOP presidential candidate, Pat Buchanan calls neoconservatism "a globalist, interventionist, open borders ideology," and says that neocons are "illegitimate interlopers in the conservative movement."

Video: Pat Buchanan on McCain
Video: Pat Buchanan vs Neocons
What kind of conservative are you? I reject the Welfare/Warfare State even if it is sometimes dressed-up like a church lady. If you're not a neoconservative, but a traditional conservative, there's only one person you can vote for during this election -- Dr. Ron Paul

We have a better choice with a true conservative!!
Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign is alive and well! The national media would like the voters to think he is out of the race. The fact is Huckabee is strongly positioned to win big on Super Tuesday. Mike is the only true conservative left.
Mike Huckabee is a man of exceptional honor, integrity, and moral character. He solidly, consistantly, and unfailingly stands by what he believes. He not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. He has the most experience in all areas of political life, including foreign policy, national security, education, tax relief and crime management.
He always tries to find the most efficient way to solve a problem and use taxpayers money in the most beneficial way for them, rather than the government.
He is unwaveringly and staunchly pro-life pro-marriage and pro-family. Anyone who holds these values dear, needs to support Mike Huckabee in every way they can. Every vote for Mike Huckabee is a vote for every American. Go to www.AlaskansforHuckabee.com to join us and vote HUCKABEE Feb 5

"...The U.S. military, which gave a lower death toll, said both attacks were caused by female suicide bombers and blamed al Qaeda. An Iraqi military official said the two women were mentally handicapped and the bombs detonated by remote control.
"By targeting innocent Iraqis they show their true demonic character," Lieutenant-Colonel Steve Stover, a spokesman for U.S. troops in Baghdad, said in a statement referring to al Qaeda in Iraq."
Obama, Clinton, McCain and the Dems feel that an interrogation method that is used to train our own memebers in the intell is torture.
McCain, Obama and Cinton feel that we should not use an effect method to get information to prevent such acts of terrorism. We now see how demonic the terrorist are. Using two women who are mentally handicapped to bomb both themselves and others.
And we see how hypocritical McCain is as well as Obama, Clinton and the Democrats are.

Ron Paul is the only candidate talking about the tough issues. The other candidates don't want to talk about the fact that this superpower is spending hundreds of billions of dollars carrying out a global war that is unsustainable. So there's no discussion.
The other candidates are not being straightforward.
Dr. Paul is taking on the most powerful organizations in the world; the military-industrial-pharmaceutical complex and, like Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln and Kennedy did before him, the central banking cartels.
I've never given money to a campaign before. I've ever put a political bumper sticker on my car before. I've never had hope in our political process before. Never, that is, until I learned about Dr. Ron Paul. There's gonna be statues and memorials made in honor of him some day.
The good doctor has cured my apathy, and he can cure yours too. Here comes the Ron Paul Revolution!

He has been repeatedly been named the "TAXPAYERS BEST FRIEND" IN CONGRESS

A Lifelong Republican Becomes a Democrat to Caucus for Obama
I'm a lifelong Republican, but I changed my registration to Democrat so I can participate in the Democratic caucus and stand up for Obama. I am the same age as Caroline Kennedy and share her feeling of never having been inspired by a President. Obama gives me hope for this country in a way the man from Hope and his wife, or any of the Republican candidates, do.

Why does a president need to be inspiring? Why do you need a president to give you hope in this country?
I'm inspired by T-Pain's song LOW, but I require more from the president than some feel-good spin with my Starbucks latte.
It's a job, people. We just need someone who can do it, not talk about it.
It's sad that so many emotionally needy people are looking to a president for inspiration.
Motivate yourself already.

Apathy is why we need someone inspiring. After 7 years of a President like George W. Bush, who does not seem to care about anyone's opinion other than his own, it's hard to be motivated enough to pay attention and be involved in the decision making process that is democracy. We need a credible, respectable president. That is Barack Obama.

I hope you all get out there and support Ron Paul. He is working tirelessly for our freedoms. He is the only one who has our best interest at heart. He wants to bring the troops home now. Also save $1 trillion overseas, reducing our debt, helping vetrans, children, and seniors, and cutting taxes: and let Americans keep more of their own money they make. He is pro gun and pro life. End the IRS. Secure our borders and end illegal immigration. End birthright citizenship for illegal aliens. Stop the national ID card. If you want to learn more about him go to ronpaul2008.com He is the only hope for our future. Voting for him in the Caucuses on Tuesday is very Important. RON PAUL IS THE JEFFERSON OF OUR DAY
Ron Paul is, by far, the best candidate running in this election. He is awakening the economic, political, social and ethical traditions that have made America great. As Ron Paul says, it is his "message," not himself that is responsible for the rapid rise and strength of his grass roots campaign. He is, however, an ideal messenger, with the experience and personal qualities to translate that message into reality as President.
It's like Fox News' Judge Andrew Napolitano says, "There are 535 people on Capitol Hill whose job it is to write the laws that govern all of us, and he is one of them. There are 535 people on Capitol Hill whose job it is to preserve the Constitution, and he is one of them. There are 535 people on Capitol Hill whose job it is to preserve our liberties, and he is one of them. But in his heart and in his head, in his character and in his intellect, and in what he has done and in what he will become - the Thomas Jefferson of our day - Ron Paul is one of us!"

Caucus/Primary and Instant run-off
Regadless of who someone supports they should think about the benefits of instant runoff in this process.
When a party is choosing a candidate it should matter who someone's second or third choice would be.
There also clearly needs to be reform of this selection process. I may think Paul and Kusinich are fringe elements but they deserve their chance. Instant runoff likely leaves them behind but it might help some other people to have a chance.

DR. PAUL SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER.
I support Ron Paul's candidacy because he is the only candidate for president in 2008 who is both anti-war and anti-welfare. Moreover, he advocates radical and desperately needed reforms of the IRS and the Federal Reserve.
Ron Paul appears to be that rarest of all politicians: one who actually has principles and acts in accordance with those principles. I think of Ron Paul as a modern-day Socrates. Like Socrates, Dr. Paul remains true to his principles by not being afraid to say things that are unpopular. He's the only candidate who is not afraid to say "the Emperor wears no clothes."
His consistency, forthrightness, and courage in the face of what have been brutal onslaughts has brought him worldwide admiration and respect. Only Paul offers hope for real change in America change; all other candidates promise nothing but the status quo and to take America further down the road of more wars, imperialism, national socialism, big government, high taxes, declining dollar, feudalism and an even more bloated bureaucracy.

RON PAUL IS GOING TO WIN THIS THING!
"Ron Paul doesn't have a chance to win. You can't fight City Hall. Death and taxes." It's all a bunch of enemy propaganda rolling across our picket line.
It's time for us to stand-up tall, and to let the establishment know that we're not going to let them cram us into their rat maze anymore. We will no longer submit to their agenda of dehumanization and disenfranchisement.
I want freedom, and more of it--not tyranny, and that's what you should want too. It's up to each and everyone of us to turn-loose just some of the fear, because that is their most effective method of controlling us--make us feel pathetic and small so we'll, willingly, give-up our sovereignty, our liberty and our destiny.
We have got to realize that we are being conditioned on a mass scale. Start challenging this corporate slave state that rules over us all.
What a bunch of garbage--liberal Democrats, conservative Republicans. It's all a phony, poorly-staged, left-right paradigm designed to control you. It's two sides of the same coin--two management teams bidding for the CEO job of Slavery Incorporated.
Ron Paul is going to win this thing. The American people are too good. We're not a bunch of underachievers. We're going to stand-up together and beat the odds. We are going to get fired-up and use our creativity, our energy, and our burning desire for freedom to show Slavery Incorporated that the dynamic human spirit of the Twenty-first Century refuses to submit.

AMERICA IS SICK. IT NEEDS A DOCTOR.
The America envisioned by our Founders and the Constitution is not yet dead, but it is mortally wounded. Instead of separation of powers, we have a tyrannical executive branch. Instead of a free market economy, we have massive subsidies, credits, manipulation of the stock market, and other games which skew the system so that there is not a level playing field.
The leaders we have now and the way things work are wholly corrupt. The structures are rotten and moldy, and have to be ripped-out and rebuilt. The pipes are clogged and need cleaning-out. The neocons and neoliberals, the imperialists, the lobbyists, the dual loyalists, and the military-industrial complex, have all cannibalized America to the point that it is hardly breathing.
The Framers of the Constitution would not recognize this place, except perhaps as a repeat of tyranny they suffered under the British crown. America is sick folks. It needs a doctor--Dr. Ron Paul. He knows the ills of our nation, and how to cure them.

Romney's business smarts may not help in Washington
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/25974.html
Nice one from the bosses.
Both Romneys did well on the state's economy. Bringing policy that works is what Washington needs, not more of the same from people like Hillary, Barack or McCain.
McClatchy news tanks on readership and stock market value. Washington is broke and has been for years.
There is a connection between opinions in the press and Washington.
Maybe Mcclathy could pay more than 10 bucks an hour to assistant managers since the editors are always carping on better wages and union jobs.

RON PAUL IS A MAN OF PRINCIPLES
Ron Paul is a real patriot who understands that true love of country requires, first, trusting in God's Providence and next obedience to our Constitution. He is a man who rejects mindless jingoism such as "My country right or wrong." Instead, he believes that when our country is wrong -- as it is today in many ways -- true patriots must work to set us right.
John F. Kennedy once said, "An error doesn't become a mistake until you refuse to correct it."
As President, Ron Paul would work to set our country right. I have followed his voting record for a long time. His consistent principled voting has won my admiration then, and his unwavering commitment to those principles has only increased my level of support, making him the first political candidate to whom I have ever donated my money.
Dr. Paul is an upright man who fears God, hates covetousness (big government), and speaks the truth regardless of what others might be saying.
I am honored to support Dr. Paul, knowing this is one man I can depend on to do after the election exactly what he promised before the election.

RON PAUL IS AN AMERICAN'S AMERICAN
Out here where the people live, there is a great stirring. The old lies no longer work.
The Welfare/Warfare State is tottering toward collapse and the bi-partisan political establishment that built its power on the ashes of the Constitution is afraid. It should be afraid because Ron Paul is the embodiment of the original American idea, the founding concepts which propelled this nation into greatness, perhaps our last great chance to restore that which has been lost.
We must seize the moment for posterity's sake. Adherence to constitutional principles is the only cure to what is becoming a police state in the name of the war on terrorism.
We need a man like Ron Paul now more then ever. He is a candidate all Americans can embrace as their role model for common values. His steadfast defense of the Constitution, his refusal to abandon principle for politics, and his down-to earth Christian family values make him an easy choice for President; he is truly an American's American.

Republicans spent the last few debates arguing about who is the most fiscally conservative, pro-life, pro-states rights, will support permanent tax cuts and is the most electable in a general election.
Fiscally Conservative-There is only one candidate who has never voted to increase spending and never voted to increase taxes.
Pro-life-All the candidates have stated a pro-life position only one has talked about the secular reason for it........
States Rights-At the CA debate all candidates supported CA's right to pass its’ own emissions standards. Only one candidate supports CA's medical marijuana law (AK has a similar one) and has stated that Federal law should not be used to imprison CA residents who are in compliance with CA law (the will of the people).
Support permanent tax cuts- All candidates say they support the tax cuts. Two support elimination of the income tax. Of those two only one wants to offset the loss in revenue with reduced government spending. The other wants a federal sales tax.
Most electable in the general elections- Many of these candidates have some support outside the GOP, and will garner some portion of the independent vote. Only one candidate can pull Democrats away from Hillary and Obama.
The one candidate is Ron Paul. Don’t take my word for it. Do some research and think for yourself.

DEMOCRATS HOODWINKED BY HILLARY
Sadly, even though Clinton voted for the war in Iraq, and a host of Laws aimed at removing civil liberties; and our country's sovereignty, Democrats are so blinded by her cult of personality that I predict they will overwhelmingly vote to put her crime family back into office. While I've made some progress in educating Liberals as to the phony staged consensus of the left-right paradigm, the fact remains that a majority of Democrats still see the White House as some kind of political Super Bowl, where the success of their "team" is the be all and end all - to the expense of America as a whole. The Punch and Judy show theater that was the "troop surge" debate in the Senate characterizes Hillary's role in hoodwinking Americans perfectly. The debate is framed as not whether the U.S. should get out of the Middle-East altogether, but the relative minutia of whether to feed thousands of more troops into the meat grinder or not. A Clinton presidency will mean more war, more dead Americans, and a further desecration of the tattered shreds of what's left of our Constitution. Clinton is the ultimate global elitist and represents the Democrats supposed base: the poor and downtrodden, about as much as Lindsay Lohan represents grace and dignity. I'm sure she informed the likes of David Rockefeller and Queen Beatrix as to her presidential aspirations during her last visit to attend the Bilderberger conference. Vote for a REAL AMERICAN. Vote for Ron Paul.

She's the only one who can do the job. Health care for all americans is the single most important issue we face. She's the only one truely dedicated to it. America is somewhere around #35 in good affordable health coverage.

I don't think having the Federal Government taking care of our every need or want is the answer. What about taking care of ourselves? I do not want to live in a socialistic America. I DO NOT want the FEDERAL Gov. involved with my health care or any other part of my personal and private life.
RON PAUL!!!

Fascinating dialogue here, with many comments about polarization and who will look out best for Alaska's economy. Problem is, so many of these come from such short-sighted thinking about what will happen this afernoon, or tomorrow if we're lucky. What about the day after tomorrow, when the next generation has to suffer the effects that the priorities of this generation of ignorant, greedy Alaskans, and Americans in general, have spread? Progress is inevitable, so why quit denying it? Discuss it and plan for it in a rational way instead of sticking our collective heads in the permafrost, now that it's starting to thaw!
We are lucky to live here and if we don't plan for the longer term we will be sharing it with everybody else, because it will be the only habitable place left in the US! The Canadians are smart enough not to let us in, that's for sure.
Palin's shown us that a fresh face and attitude can kick the good ol' boys in the *&$%$ and give the rest of the world a chance to voice their opinion. We need this freshness on a national level, too. Hillary's got Bill in her giant carpetbag, McCain's got Vietnam in his pocket, Romney's got his own little universe on the horizon. I'll stand up for Obama, if only for the fact that he's relatively new. Besides, here we have a chance to put racial divisiveness behind us once and for all! In the end, it's still politics, and anybody who wants to join the club shouldn't be allowed to be a member, anyway. Might as well be a groundbreaker instead of a network of entrenched Pluto-crats.

Most other presidential candidates want to continue our illegal war in Iraq indefinitely, and they do not rule out a preemptive (nuclear) first strike against Iran. Conversely, while Clinton and Obama have been busy supporting the war in Iraq, Ron Paul has steadfastly opposed it from day one. Check their voting record. The area is more dangerous now than when we entered it. We destroyed a regime hated by our direct enemies--the jihadists, and created thousands of new recruits for them. The war in Iraq has cost nearly 4,000 American lives and has cost us almost a trillion dollars. We need a President with a track record of good judgement. Both Jefferson and Washington warned us about entangling ourselves in the affairs of other nations. Today, we have 750 foreign bases and troops in 130 countries. We are spread so thin that we have too few troops defending America. No war should ever be fought without a Declaration of War voted upon by the Congress, as required by The Constitution.
