What question would you ask a pet psychic?

This week's topic is pet psychics. Not so much do you believe in them but what would you ask if you did. And what would you expect/want to hear.

I bring up this topic because they had one at the Mountain View Petco grand opening last weekend. I scoffed when I heard about it, but, hey, it was free so I went for it with both my Yorkies.

My question: What kind of life did Jack have before he ended up in the shelter at 10 years old?

Psychic: He was passed around. Mostly among an extended family. He was a breeder and was treated as an object. He never felt loved. When he ended up in the shelter, he was ready to check out. He was tired of life. But you've changed all that. He feels like he's part of the family. You treat him like a dog, not an object. He loves you very much. And he wants you to know that. She also suggested that he could use some front leg massages because of a back leg surgery he had.

Me: Awwwwwwww, Jack! I love you too, buddy!

So then she did Eddie, my 3-year-old who I've had since 10 weeks.

My wife's question: How does he like Jack and Rusty, our two rescues?

Psychic: He doesn't mind them. He is the prince, and everybody is there for him. He's not the king. He doesn't want those responsibilities. He's the favored child and expects everyone to do what he wants.

Kelly: THAT explains it!

Do I believe it? Nah, but it was good entertainment. And the Petco psychic was at least sincere. You know, I want to believe her.

Need psychic help for Sheltie in Muldoon

My next door neighbor has a min. sheltie that barks way too much. Whenever I open the garage door, drive in the drive, have guests over, someone walks by on the street, ... I'm sure you get the idea. I have asked the neighbor to help but she refuses to use a bark collar and since the dog "didn't like" the muzzle, she doesn't use that, either. I'm looking for Peace on Earth to be restored in my home as it no longer exists. I don't want to involve MOA, yet, but would rather exhaust all other options. Talking to my neighbor resulted in "her getting mad at me". I want to be a good neighbor and need help! Thanks for an avenue to vent!

Thanks for the offer to help. She did have a mobile dog trainer here ...perhaps it was you ... early this summer (or was it last year) and refused to heed the advise (and if I recalled, cancelled a check written to the dog trainer for future lessons)... I'm not sure you would want to get involved. ??? I have to agree with Chris Goff on her call of a young Sheltie being the wrong dog for a retired 70 year old woman to start with. That being said, the problem still remains .... Perhaps I can call you?

Robin, I left a message on your recorder last night to let you know this Sheltie owner is not "Linda".. but & if an address on Tagalak rings a bell, that would be the one.
It's very cold over here which is a mixed blessing. I feel sorry for the animals that have to live outside but thankful it is too cold for the Sheltie to lay on the doorstep - on patrol.

The barking specifically.

Is is sustained barking? Crazy howling, "Why am I alone" barking?

From your description, it is short-term situational barking whed the dog is responding to stimuli, like your garage door, driving into your driveway, people coming into view. If this is the case, living this close to a neighbor is not a good situation for you. I know that sounds unsympathetic, and believe me I do feel your noise pain. Shelties, btw, are known to be barky. Re contacting the MOA, most city dog barking laws are specific to the time the barking goes on (after 10 p.m. or 9 p.m. in most places) because noise during regular waking hours is what it is and has to be expected.

I have a westie, which is another barky breed. My husband and I go out after him when the barking exceeds 30 seconds because we don't want our neighbors to be bothered with it. We don't discipline him when this happens because we know he is "on the watchdog job" but we do distract him away from what he is calling our attention to and he gets quieted down.

All that being said and having the monkey on your back, city life is a 2-way street. Is your neighbor keeping her Sheltie 'livestocked' in her yard? Maybe she needs to make that dog a part of the household and not tied up outdoors all the time? Really, in a perfect world she would not want you and your family to be subjected to constant barking. A realistic amount of situational barking is one thing, make-the-neighbors-insane barking is another.

Wow, you sound like a considerate neighbor to at least try to resolve the problem before having to involve the muni. We should all be so lucky.

I don't think you can expect the neighbor to use a bark collar if they are opposed to them. However, you should be able to insist that they address the problem.

Maybe another round of talks? See if you can come up with a solution together. Are they not hearing their dog when it barks? Are there some times of the day or night where it's worse than other times? If they addressed it right away, would that satisfy you?

If that doesn't work, videotape and call the muni.

My neighbor does hear her dog bark and does tell it to be quiet but considering she has allowed the dog to be 'alpha' in the family, it ignores her. I have used a water hose to try quiet it this summer, and that worked, but I'm not apt to have a hose in my car as I drive in and out of the garage.

I don't expect them to use the bark collar but don't understand why the muzzle isn't being used. It's like I'm the one that is being punished as the sound of this yappy dog equates to fingernails on the chalkboard to me. My neighbor is retired and home to let the dog in and out 40 times a day, it's just that she has no control over its barking and just goes to the door and says "treat-treat" when she wants it to come in. Drives me nuts that she is trying to reward the dog.

She did have a dog trainer come by this summer who suggested the dog needs to have walks to get it to not be so nuts (it turns wildly round and round when it barks) but the neighbor says she is old and retired and can't do it.. When the trainer suggested using a treadmill for the dog, she insisted she couldn't afford to buy the dog a treadmill on her retirement pay.

Neighbor lives alone in 1/2 her duplex, her son lives in the other half. They hear the dog - but they have allowed the dog to be 'alpha' and the dog knows it.

So - in regard to another round of talks, I'd be glad to try. The barking doesn't happen at night which I am thankful for, just barks every time I open my garage door or someone drives up in my drive or walks by on the street. I am a landscaper and spend lots of time at my residence (especially in the winter) so it's not like I have an 8-5 job out of the home and am not subjected to an all day barking schedule.

I have addressed the problem of barking to the neighbor and I'm sure she would like it to stop too --- but now she has turned her attention to being mad at me for trying to be 'alpha'........ argh......

Sorry, just read your detailed reply.

Situation is clear, this poor Sheltie is being owned by someone who has no biz owning a Sheltie (a working dog who needs plenty of stimulation, a "job," and family contact).

I feel for your situation because clearly you have sympathy for this dog who is being driven nuts by its lot in life.

I know this is not your 'job,' but if it solved your dilema, could you take it for a daily walk? It would reduce the neurotic energy the dog has and make it familiar with you, might even be able to get it to accept YOU as a command giver?

I have two springer spaniels that love to go for walks and I know I can't control all three at once. I've never entertained the thought of walking the Sheltie myself, but at this point.... I'm willing to give it the college try. I don't know if the owner will trust me after months of me screaming at the dog to SHUT UP! Three dogs are a lot to walk.

The owner of this dog should think you're a prince after suffering the noise pollution for months and NOT doing anything more than yelling about it. I have to admit we keep our Westie pretty controlled on the barking because I would never want to make a neighbor crazy enough to harm him or anything.

She needs to get off her duff and walk this dog at least once daily and preferably twice. That dog is loaded with nervous energy and she has left him only barking as an outlet for it.

Maybe she'll move. Soon.

no chance on moving

I've been entertaining the thought of us moving as there is no way she will after redecorating her 1/2 of the house. I feel bad for entertaining the thought of 'strangling it' (I would never follow through on it) as I am a dog lover, too. But not having the ability to do anything about something that was affecting me on a daily basis was something new for me. My yelling at the dog and the dog owner would just tell the dog, "she's gonna get you if you don't shut up" is not funny nor constructive... ARGH! Thanks to all of you on the Dog Blog for being here. I don't blame you...our neighbor had a friend staying with her last year that had a barking dog that was a bored pup they tethered in the back yard. After 10pm I'd call them because my daughter had school the next day and couldn't sleep with the noise. They'd bring the dog in after I called, but I was fighting annoyance at having to call every night....you'd think the first couple times they'd get the hint that my daughter's sleep was important on a school night and 10pm was late! :sheesh: So even being dog-lovers doesn't mean barking dogs get a free pass....it is annoying! :)

Noise can make ya crazy.

Feel free to vent, it's clear you are kind and compassionate toward this dog. But noise pollution is right next to sleep deprivation for making you do/say things you never thought possible. You should not have to go to the expense/problem of moving.

Are the other neighbors with you on this? Could you all start the non-emergency police phone calls once the noise prohibition kicks in? In my experience the police are more inclined to have the "Come to Jesus" talk with someone if more than one neighbor is calling in. They are also more inclined to help when they feel the dog is being ill-treated and just being left outside for hours to bark, that is certainly not a loving way to treat your dog.

I have talked to the neighbors around me and they don't like it either, but I didn't get the feeling they wanted to be "unneighborly" (which is how my husband thinks bringing in any enforcement entity would be..). The neighbor across the street had a couple barking dogs and they were cited and the dogs moved out to Peters Creek (yahoo, it's got to be better for the dogs that locked in a small Anchorage yard)... so it's not that there is total kaos in the neighborhood..... just in my small section!
This dog is not ill-treated in any way. She lets it in and out a zillion times a day (it paws at the door), I'm the one who is ill-treated with no consideration given when it comes to the chalk=board-sounding-bark of the Sheltie. Thanks for letting me whine -- and yes, I would like cheese with that.

I hear you on the spouse aspect. My husband grew up in rural Wyoming (I believe that is redundant), me in urban California, and we have radically different ways in which we think it is correct to interact with the neighbors in the 'hood.

Not bang too hard on this drum, but having a working dog breed involves more than taking it to the door 10,000 times/day. I think your neighbor is cruel to that particular dog. She ought to have a nice lap dog that would not even THINK of multiple walks per day and a job to do.

BTW, I told my husband about this blog and his suggestion was for you/your husband to buy several rabbits or even better, get two sheep, drop them into that dog's yard and let that dog just work itself into a stupor each day, too tired to bark!!!

Chris, if you or your husband could assure me that the dog wouldn't bark constantly at the sheep while herding them around, I'd knock down the fence between the two yards and get a couple of sheep (can't see how the rabbits would stick around when there is a bike path on the other side of the fence) and pay the extra expense for sheep food (they like veggies, right?) just for harmony in Muldoon. Chedder & Chardonnay suits me to a tee.... so does Arizona {looking at temp gauge of 5 with glazed eyes}.

My recommedation is to order some of Cesar Millans Dog Whisperer DVD's...the man is amazing! Maybe he has some "trick" people can use to stop a dog who continues to bark?? Just a suggestion..but i have learned a great deal from him and his DVD's. I highly recommend them to anyone who has a dog with "issues"!

dog barking problems

Their are a few things you can try, the first is do you take your own dog for a walk? if so you might offer to take this one with you for one walk a day when you go out. or invite it over to your house for a play date in your yard. This might help it get more exersize.

you can also get a device that you attach to your house that emits a high pitch noise to help discourage barking. it is like a bark collar but not attached to the dog.

You can use a rattle can when the dog starts barking shake the can when it goes quiet toss it a treat.

I do take my own dogs for a walk - as well as to the park to toss the Frisbee. I've asked her to come with to the park and a couple of times she did. The dog just stood by her legs most of the time and when it did venture away a little, she called it back (another reason why I suggested she pursue dog training measures). Plus, when it did venture away, it was just to chase my dogs barking at them.

I do love the idea of the device to attach to my house but wonder if it will hurt my own dogs ears (when they are not barking but neighbor dog is). If you'd be kind enough to give my your opinion on the name of the high pitched devise, I'll get it. I'm desperate.

In regard to the rattle can, I'll try it to see if it stops. the dog is really fussy in its treats and the Yummy Chummies don't work... it just barks as I pelt it with treats. Thanks ever so much for suggestions.

I dig a web search for "anti bark devices" and came up with alot of them. I have not used any of these products but know people who have used these type of anti bark devices that emit a high pitched whine/squeal the do work to a certain degree. They are not cheep so do some research talk to the company before you buy any of their products.

This site has several types and say they are rain/water proof even have a remote control. This site does have a money back guarantee if it does not work within a specified amount of time.

Thanks for your web search and suggestions. What about my own two dogs? When the Sheltie barks and it goes off, will my dogs be affected as well? I will research, of course, just wanted to know from a professional Anchorage dog trainer - thoughts on what it does to my sweet dogs that aren't barking.

anti bark devices

since the offending dog is not wearing it on it's person. the ultrasonic sound can be heard by all the dogs around. It does not actually hurt the dogs it just makes them stop barking to find where the sound is coming from.

Yes your dogs will hear it along with the barking dog.

You have my sympathy...

although I don't have any good suggestions as to how to help. It makes me feel so fortunate that I live on the cul de sac I do. We have 12 dogs on our street between 11 houses, and all of them are inside dogs that rarely are left outside unattended long enough to bark for a few minutes. Sheer luck. I hope you can find a resolution with this, because that must be really annoying.

my neighbors hate my dog... I live in a Zero lot line and they have a horrible habit of slamming their doors and unfortunately everytime they do, my dog barks (we're working on that). They're overall pretty noisey people, so I dont feel too bad about it, especially after getting woken up at 2-3am by them or their friends slamming car doors.

Glad to hear that you are working on your dogs barking at the neighbor slamming doors. But instead of waiting to find out if there is discontent because of the noise (and there obviously is on your side) talk to them when you bring over a Christmas card or homemade treat. That is so much better than to wait until MOA gets involved, I would think. Good luck teaching your dogs to be better neighbors, too.

I've attempted talking to them...

as they continually park their 7 cars on my lawn, block in my driveway etc. and are generally loud at times when I'm trying to sleep however nothing I have attempted to talk with them about makes a dent in the issue for longer than about 5 minutes. I've actually thought about putting a tack strip across my lawn to keep em offa it, in reality though, I think next summer I am going to build a nice cedar fence divider to keep them on their side. I think they've actually taken over the vacant house on the other sides driveway completely.

As far as the dogs go, they have a dog also who yodels through the fence whenever my dog is in the yard which results in them yelling at their dog so i try to take mine out when he's not out in his yard. Mines a pup so I am hoping to break the barking at minor sounds soon, he reacts well to the squirt bottle, one peep outta him and I pick it up and tell him "quiet" and lately that's been working fairly well. When I first got my pup I went over and appologized as he was doing a lot of crying at night and they all stared at me blankly, so i've kinda left it at that.

I saw the phycic at the Grand Opening of Petco in MT View...I just kinda laughed and passed her by..but i was very impressed that Petco gave out free 20 lb bags of Dog food...the premium kind! I am glad to have a new Petco on this side of town (mountainview). Its about time! I went in there to give out cards for our Kennel and Daycare and ended up buying a ton of toys that were very reasonably priced! And the people who i talked to were very excited to get our business cards...the staff was also very receptive to letting me hand out cards. BTW i found a cute little shop called Paw Prince on Old Seward..lots of doggie"bling" and handmade items...Check it out! It is a cute little store! Ak Pet Boarding & Daycare

Yeah, it is nice to have another Petco on this side of town. Plus, I think I got one of your cards. That was nice of you to pass them out.

A lot of dog bloggers have raved about Paw Prince, and in fact the owner stops in every now and then. It's a great addition to the local pet scene.

I would ask why Pepper acts

I would ask why Pepper acts depressed in the morning. Is she achey and that's why she doesn't want to play? Or is she just not a morning dog and likes to wake up slowly? Is it because she senses I hate mornings, since she won't get up until I'm up, even when my husband is the early riser and Scarlett is very eager to get up with him? Her moods baffle me sometimes, and I'd love to know why she sometimes acts mopey and I can't figure out why.

I always figured he knew I was going to work, but even on the days he's going to day care he lounges around on my bed or the couch watching me while I get ready for work. Maybe he's just not a morning dog, he ususally goes back to bed on the weekends, with or without me!

Baily is not a morning dog. Getting her up before noon is a chore. I get her downstairs by shutting the door between floors and then she just goes to her bed and falls asleep. Once I get her outside she curls up on our porch and falls back asleep.
After getting her in the back of my jeep she curls up and falls asleep. Once we get somewhere exciting (daycare, park, grandmas) she decides it is now ok to get up and goes spastic.

Neiko is not a morning dog either. when the alarm goes off Moroni is raring to go waiting for daddy to get out of bed, Neiko on the other hand does not even move.

When it is time to go out for morning potty he goes out after being called, does his business, heads straight back for the house climbs back into his kennel and does not move till after noon.
