Kohring Lawyer John Henry Browne asked Veco founder Bill Allen about something that came up at the corruption trial last month of former state Rep. Pete Kott. It was regarding Allen’s nephew, Dave Anderson.

Anderson was blackmailing you and you threatened to kill him? Browne asked.

“I was not going to kill him, no,” Allen responded

But that’s the information the government had, wasn’t it? Browne asked.

Allen went back to a point he made a number of times during cross examination.

That’s just part of the story, Allen said. “You have to do the whole thing.”

Anyway, what was Anderson blackmailing him about? Browne asked.

“Ted Stevens’ house,” Allen anwered.

He was referring to a 2000 renovation that doubled the size of Stevens’ home in Girdwood. Allen testitied in the Kott trial that Veco employees worked on the renovation and he donated some materials.

Veco paid for that, correct? Browne asked Allen.

Allen said he didn’t know how much.

Browne asked him if part of his cooperation deal with the government was to help investigate Stevens and the money Veco gave for the Girdwood house?

Yes, Allen answered.

not a strong case, so far

I personally don't care much for Vic, but honestly this case is pretty thin so far. I have not seen any evidence that Vic was offered money for his vote -even implied. They certainly gave him money. But nothing jumps out at me as remotely convincing that the money was for his vote.

(slightly off-topic) I'm growing more and more convinced the case against Uncle Ted is more about that Pac/West no-bid contract than the VECO renovations. There are some interesting connections to U.S. Senator Smith to Pac/West to Uncle Ted.....to Don Young...to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Acts Reauthorization process... and to former Congressman Richard Pombo -who is now employed by Pac/West...and a few others. Stay tuned...but the more I dig the more this appears connected to the Fisherys Act....and we all know the allegations on kickbacks to certain people related to the fishing industry. When the legislators went to Juneau and would just drink and chase female legislative aides, banging on the motel room door to please let them in the room, or when they got together at the bowling alley and drank and just yelled at each other? Indeed, the Baranof had a

Indeed, the Baranof had a different reputation back in the cocaine 80s. Legislators made deals of additional varieties in that same hotel back then.

But the 'gifting' of Alaska's revenues/resources to corporatists and lobbyists, by legislators, was every bit as heavy then as it is now.

It was that same period of time that included the coked-up, call-girl-laden legislative parties at the Baranof, during which Mr. Dankworth and Ms. Ramona Barnes helped to get the ELF (Economic Limit Factor) on-line, thus giving away Billions of dollars in Alaska's oil revenues.

If I were the owner of the Baranof, I'd consider changing my hotel's name right about now. And if I were one of tens or hundreds of Alaska legislators, or former legislators, who gave away my constituency's legacy for a pocket full of coins, I'd seriously consider finding a new zip code to reside near.

It's likely to feel kinda' unfriendly in the north for some folks, not too long from now.

First The Book Deal

The book deal, then the movie, and finally the soap opera that will go on for years here in Alaska and in re-runs forever ...................... it's called history. There's more honest politics in Louisiana than what we seem to have here.

And "Uncle" Ted, "Drunken" Don, as well as "Bug Eyes" are not going to come out like they wanted in the history book of Alaska and the Nation. They will be shown to have been as dirty as they always have been.
