I do think that Kyle and co. need to start paying attention to something else. Perhaps Palin calling in the House to present something when she has nothing concrete yet? Or maybe her calling out Cowdry which is something that did come up in this trial? Even the talk about responsibility for snow removal on sidewalks seems like a topic worthy of a blog.

That post is even ignorant for you Leo and that is a low standard to come in under.

I have pointed out many times that all of these clowns in Juneau have their masters. VECO is just the tip of the iceberg.

Take a look at the APOC reports on any politician and there are patterns. You can say that it is possible the influence stops at the donation but it is not likely. Major coprporations, lawyers, unions, environmental lobbies, other special interests and even doctors all wielding their dollars.

Perhaps you should get back to one of my major points all the time. We need a third party to get out from uder these rocks. You are more than welcome to join that party unless you want to saty a Dem with your labor union, trial lawyer and envirowhacko masters.

By the way, I have never seen Logic defend any of them either. About the only thing you did not do here is connect it to Iraq as is your pattern.

Since you are so interested in undue influence how about explaing the repeated campaign contribution irregularities of the Clintons over the years. Selling the Lincoln Bedroom again Leo?

But seriously, Sdog, whether it was Tony Knowles or 'Frank the Bank' giving away our BILLIONS (yes, Billions, with a 'B') of dollars from -OUR- collective resources (resources that could've potentially established a permanent fund capable of sponsoring a LIMITED state government for a LONG time to come), the fact is that -some- of the causes of that long-term theft are now in the open light of day, and hanging their heads a bit lower than before.

It's now time for those who sold their constituencies, oaths, and portions of others' futures in exchange for cash, and corporate (personal and political) favors, to pay the piper. And if it's possible to succeed in that mission, there's many amongst us who don't feel anything but relief and joy over it. Giddy even. Myself being one of them.

Is this the end of political corruption in Alaska, either by D's or by R's?? Do most kids crave fruit cake at Christmas, prefering it to new toys??

Was William Jefferson despicable as a human being?? I belive so. Did he favor Tyson's seafood dept and corporate chicken farmers to the detriment of others, including others in Alaska's seafood industry and markets? Yeah, most likely. Was he a sexual predator? Probably that too.

Did William Jefferson steal billions of dollars from the coffers of my and others' kids' futures in Alaska, in exchange for a small handful of gold, and perhaps some questionable job offers? No.

This is not just political; it's personal. In -many- ways. Very personal.

Are we capable, as a group, as a state, of enjoying the down-fall of those who sold us out, and still maintaining a capacity to make other decisions with regard for their depth and very serious implications? Maybe.

But I don't think that the probable retribution and associated glee that we're witnessing now is going to morph that already questionable capacity for rational decision making. I mean, this State voted for GW!! TWICE!!! What amount of balanced insight, geared toward serious decision making, was present to begin with, with a track record like THAT??!!

So let's bring stiff justice expeditiously to those with little regard for the concept of integrity in public office, rejoice at the opportunity for those crooks to experience some serious humility, where they cleearly lacked sufficient amounts of it before, and waddle forward from there; hopefully with somewhat more honest representation.

No one is saying it does not deserve attention. The problem is it is taking ALL the attention and leaving many other things lurking.

One thing the media and the govt need to do is learn to multi-task. Both entities tend to get on something and perseverate.

For the media that usually means pounding on the left wing drum with the exception of FOX and a few newspapers in the country.

This whole "fair share" thing is getting a bit old in Alaska. The oil companies provide almost 90% of the cost of running this state. Every time you fill your car with gas more money is going to government than to the oil companies and a significant portion is going to Alaska.

I may be a little more sensitive because the same "fair share" argument is made by Dems in DC about income tax. My "fair share" under that formula is mor than some villages in this state pay I suspect and compared to them I get squat back.

It is a sad day when conservatives in this country have spent like they have recently. When I hear conservatives(or maybe I should say so-called conservatives) clamouring to tax tax tax I worry that there will be no reasonable voice left.

Call them out for corruption and I agree. The devil here remains in the backlash and where that may lead us if we are not careful. Fanning the flames like this blog id doing right now is not being careful.

First of all

this kind of attention is never paid to Democrats.

If the current fundraising scandal with Hilary Clinton had happened with an R we'd be hearing about until March. It has already faded from the little attention it was getting.

New Jersey is an interesting case of major corruption in the Dems. That includes their recent elected Dem US Senator where all the corruption was known about before he got elected. Please note the success was partially due to the media ignoring the issue more than they should have.

Barney Frank vs. Larry Craig?

Hastings? That story barely got any coverage and it deserved major coverage.

William Jefferson is hardly getting the national attention either.

It is peculiar locally how the Begich stories just disappeared.

This story deserves coverage but the blog here has turned into a play by play on the whole trial. Finally, there are a couple of other strings today but for the better part of a week it has been all Kott all the time.

When you see things like descriptions of the cups the jurors are drinking out of it is a bit overboard.

Here is the major problem....

The state is so caught up in backlash that we are failing to see the iceberg in our path. Anger and rage are not helpful when you have to make major policy decisions.

That iceberg has actually melted. The path is much clearer now.

The future of our state is managing our resources, not giving them away at discount prices levied by corrupt lawmakers and corrupt businessmen.

This has nothing to do with being fair, this is being smart.

Big Oil and Big Corporations care nothing about the economies in which they operate, they care about taking as much as they can get away with.... even if it means doing things illegally.

They are great at using scare tactics. We've invested yadda..yadda.. our jobs..yadda yadda. Ok, yes.. there is no question about that.

Investment in Alaska will be reduced? Maybe.. but not because of any rate of return from which we levy. It will be a decision by their board or executives. When I think of Investment in Alaska will be reduced.. I think of bribes will be reduced.. payoff will be reduced.. consulting contracts will be reduced..yep.. all that investment out the window.

They might have to act in an ethical manner and do business the right way for once.

Big Oil has constantly challenged the grey areas to the State's detriment, and when you have the trust of the people placed into the hand of a few.. and those few are bought off by Big Oil.. it is only reasonable to relook at those areas that were exploited.

It's not about taxing them to hell. It's called a return on our resource. Calling it a Tax is ridiculous.

The major problem is that people think that Big Oil..owns the Oil. Nope. Nadda.

If they want to go? Let them. I guarantee you there will be someone to replace them.

It is not ridiculous to call it a tax.

If the State of Alaska wants to put together everything it needs to produce the oil then let them do it. It is painfully obvious that governments cannot do that effectively.

People like yourself seem to think there is nothing but pure evil behind the oil companies. Without them there is no PFD, no money for state government and no ability to have the entitlement lifestyle across the state. Without them there would be more taxes on people like you and me.

The feds take their share as well from them. I suppose those are not taxes either.

Go ahead and find someone to replace them. Guess what, the people who replace them will want to make money as well.

Yet earlier we were treated to repeated declarations that The PFD is the root to all evil. That it enables a wicked entitlement lifestyle. If all that money weren't rolling in the sun would shine every day, every child would have two loving parents and health insurance lions might lie down with lambs and....

OK, so if we accept that then driving Big Oil out of Alaska and not replacing it would be bad because __________________________.

No contradiction

The PFD is an evil source of entitlement.

It is also beloved by all those who feel entitled and are the same ones moaning about "fair share" all the time.

I have no desire to drive big oil out of here. I would end the entitlement culture immediately if I could and put all the money away for a rainy day. I certainly would not expand things and bring more people to the state to live off the public dime which is what we do now.

When the money does dry up we will be okay until we tap out the CBR and PFD. It is possible we will buy a few more decades with a gasline.

The thing is we have built a huge entitlement and wasteful society which will eat the money up fast. The 15K per person stumpy always talks about will easily be double that in a few years. It will be compounded by a federal govt where there is no DY or Uncle Ted to bring home the bacon.

All of those evil educated oil company executives will leave. The rest of the educated employess such as the engineers will leave as well. They will be followed by many of the service industries that exist because of them. That means many lawyers who they and their opposition(environmentalists and others) use. That also means less money for all the other service industries in town from Carr's to GCI to Prov.

The money starts to dwindle and nobody useless leaves so they need an income tax to support the huge entitlement programs. So, you see more people leave who would have to pay that tax such as the doctors. Doctors will not stay if everyone left is on Medicare or Medicaid which is where we will end up. All those retired state employees will be hanging in Arizona.

What do you think happens to Anchorage's tax base if all of these people move out? This is most of the commercial real estate in town as well as most of the high end residential real estate. Say bye bye. Anchorage will clamour for money and eat up the state reserves just like a defunct village.

Sure, we may have tourism or a little mining. We might have FedEx and UPS. Does it matter when 90% of the state's revenue disappears.

Indeed, be careful what you wish for.

You may want Alaska to turn into West Virginia or Newfoundland. The better solution is to see the problem ahead and start working to fix it now. Crying over whether the oil companies are taxed at 61% or more like Nigeria is hardly productive is solving the long term problem.

Keep drinking the good stuff. Take the stand. Toe the line. Don't let anybody stop you on the road to ruin.

Ah, the money IS ok?

Just not the way it's being used!

Like the socialistic line Halcro took when he wanted to confiscate some folks PFD payments 'cause big gubbmint knew, far better than they, how to use it! We'll probably never know how far that went in influencing his tally...

Nope. We need to stop spreading all that PFD cash around immediately and distribute the principal of the fund to the world's poor before the end of the federal tax year! But first, cap those wells and tear out that unsightly pipeline. Only in that way can be regain our purity!

Of course you weren't here...likely still in prep school....but Alaska was a far better place when:

There was no pipeline.
The North Slope was pristine.
We heated our cabins with barrel stoves.
Chopped our own wood.
Sewed our own wounds when the axe slipped.
Grew our own vegetables.
Game was abundant.
Ice cream was made from seal oil - not imported cow milk.
"Sleds" were pulled by dogs or reindeer - the word wasn't a nickname for smoke-belching engines on skiis!
Needles were for sewing skins - not for injecting drugs.
"Ethics" problems were single-offense events only, ended with sharp punctuation.

Of course in those days we hadn't succumbed to the lies of "statehood".

Anchorage won't need a "tax base" when folks get back to doing for themselves what needs to be done.

A state income tax might be a good idea, though, especially if it helped drive out the few who might yet trade on printed money instead of hard goods. Working people wouldn't be affected; what's the tax on a carrot or a cabbage?

FedEx and UPS will long since have moved to that new airport abuilding in Canada. Y'know; that country where they're encouraging exploration and exploitation of natural resources. Quaint habits, eh?

Tourists?

On those ozone-destroying jets?
On those pollution spewing, garbage-dumping ships?

Nay...the skies will be clean and the air pure. Let the tourists come on the backs of mules over the passes from Skagway. If they still want to.

There's the vision of Alaska of those hard at work stopping economic development. Gotta say, it's a glorious picture though a little coarse for folks with soft hands.

Sorry, Anchorage has already been re-named, "Big Wild Life". But maybe it should have been named as you suggest. A place where poitical hacks believe they can keep milking the property tax cow forever.

Great thought, though, the concept of subsistence being the only lifestyle for Alaskans! Certainly would weed out the preppies who came here for the supposed high wages, no income tax and PFD checks! Or those who were assigned here by the military and forgot how to find their way home.

Unrealistic, though, as the future holds a service industry. The best jobs will be for folks adept at minor repair jobs; caretakers for the lodges of the elitists in whose exclusive playground a few serfs will be allowed to live. So long as those serfs don't poach the game that's the property of those superior personnages. Oh, I almost forgot, a few jobs for "gillies" to keep the commoners from "killing the salmont".

Ah well, a few still feed my fantasy and I don't even have to put on latex gloves to keep things stirred up!

You at least have some grasp of reality.

Your angle reminds me of the "no growth" crowd when I was growing up in SoCal. The ever so popular "Welcome to California, no go home" bumper sticker producers.

Incidently, many of thos groups had the same leadership as the environmental groups you love so much.

Anyway, the point is an economy is either growing or it is in trouble. Growth drives an economy because it produces jobs. The oil industry has been and still is the major base for the economic world up here.

It will go away and when it does at least you admit it may not be pretty. Alaska will become the playground you always talk about.

I have no idea if I'll be here in 20-30 years. My plans are to be here.

You want to know why our population is aging? You want to know why people are retiring up here more?

It is all about economics. No taxes. PFD. Used to have free money in the longevity bonus. Still have senior care. High disability payouts. And on top of that the growth has made the cost of living significantly lower.

I have about a dozen former state employees from CA as patients.

It is far better for everyone if we diversify the economy and grow it. The US is full of examples of places that suffer and die because the drive for their economy goes away. You can say you will love it but it is a farce.

This goes back to what we need to focus on. We need to focus on the future and what we are going to do when the billions in oil revenue go away. How are we going to make up for that 90%?

One thing is to start to reduce our addiction to spending. Another is to quit attracting the wrong element up here.

The "preppies" are not the problem. The problem is the family of 10 that brings grandma along to be the "owner" of the house. Avoid all taxes and enjoy Alaska's free ride.

People already have tried to say this is not real on here. I see it every day because in my field you see the underbelly. My wife sees even more of it.

We're busy trying to fix a small leak in the roof while there is a fire starting in our basement ready to take off and burn down the house.

Though out of touch with the new reality. It was only one vote that allowed TAPS to be built and that was before Global Warming became The National Religion. Where, or where is Spiro Agnew when Alaska will soon need him most? But, oh, that's right! It would take more than one vote and we can't count on our soon-to-be-elected environmentalist federal legislators to think of anything other than their faith!

Of course the coming dearth of employment opportunity won't cause the immediate departure of the countless millions who flocked to Alaska with their multitudes of children to get PFD checks. That's why we need to make qualifying a little more complicated. Maybe based on a lab practical exam of survival skills.

Take heart! There'll always be a need for someone to get the fishooks out of the fingers of The Laird's invited guests. Maybe even with housing provided in a neat little cabin tastefully hidden from view of the main lodge.

till things calm down so the legislators can repeat the great job they did a year ago. That sure worked well.

Keep in mind that with 2005 as a starting point when ELF was still in force and the Oil companies were (as stated by them) happy with the tax structure the oil companies have reaped the following.

2006 price average up $20 = 5.5 billion additional net profit

2007 price average up another $20 = 11 billion additional net profit

now fiscal 2008 is looking like another $20 or more per barrel = 16.5 billion.

So in 3 years the oil companies will pocket an extra 33 billion almost the entire perm fund and our indicted legislators chewed their nails about raising taxes 1 billion a year on a resource we own.

Its like selling your car on ebay for 10k and ebay hands you 1k.

No wonder Bill Allen is laughing so often in these tapes. As the front man for the oil companies it must be hilarious to hear folks like snoopy here fretting over us taking too much.

Do the math brainiac its time to get the law changed so we can enjoy the increased value of our resource.

Its not about being liberal or conservative. Its the fact that we are selling something we own to cheaply.

You are either are to lazy to confirm the facts I present or you know them to be true so its best to not look like a fool and ignore them.

I'll try to make it real simple for you.

We could give back to the oil companies the PPT, royalties, property tax and everything else we use to wrestle back our share and just take the price increase on a barrel of oil for the last 3 years. Thats worth 10 times what we currently get. The real kicker is that is all on top of the record profits they made that year.

The facts are out there snoop go look em up if you really want to know whats going on.

Yelling about 70, 80, or 100 percent is meaningless unless you know what your applying that percent to.

Deep down I think folks like you just fundamentally disagree with the way Alaska became a state.

Perhaps its an inability to grasp that it is the only way we could have ever become a state in the first place.

Like it or not it was the deal that got us here.

I'd tell you to go back and look at some of my posts to see what I thought would be the way to go with oil taxes. I understand your numbers just fine.

The way so-called Alaska conservatives rationalize their love for high taxes on oil companies is to use the Alaska constitution to justify the view we should be a bannana republic.

That is your point and if you think Nigeria and Venezuela are places to look up to then you are what you are.

I understand everything you say. The problem is I do not hate people for making a profit. You, on the other hand, think profit is bad and must all be shared by the people. Spread the wealth works great until there is no wealth which is what will eventually happen. It then becomes share the poverty like any other socialist mess.

There is no need for people to develop or become economic animals in such a situation. Look around and that is what you see in a large portion of the population. The ones you do not see it in are us carpetbaggers who have no problem paying our own way.

When the state becomes the equivilant of West Virginia...those of us with ambition and who trully understand what the USA is all about will be more than happy to leave you in your sociallist squalor.

Sdog, You left something out of your example. The oil belongs to the state (ie the people of the state). While I am not against companies making a profit, I want to see the resources of this state used to the maximum advantage of the state and it's people. We don't need to give away our resources to keep someone happy who will be gone after the (finite) resource is gone. The oil companies don't care what happens to us and our state after the oil is gone. I expect our representatives in the state government to care and plan ahead and get the best deal for us all. We don't need to rush to give our oil and gas away. If it stays in the ground, it will only become more valuable as it becomes harder to get. Future generation might just thank us for saving some for them.

according to oil company reps themselves before the repeal of elf we shared with the oil companies about 6 billion a year. They netted 6 and we taxed 3 billion of that 6 effectively splitting that 6 billion.
