The Highliner

Commercial fishing is a bedrock industry in Alaska, and has been for more than a century. Every year scores of fishermen net millions of migrating salmon, challenge the icy Bering Sea to trap king crabs, lay miles and miles of baited hooks for halibut, and scoop up enough pollock for a zillion fish sticks. And when fishermen aren't out fishing, they're usually talking about fishing. That's what this blog by Wesley Loy has been all about for the two years he has written it.

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough today took a poke at Cook Inlet commercial salmon fishermen, accusing them of catching more than their share of the run.

“Once again, the commercial fishing fleet for the Upper Cook Inlet enjoys an abundance of fish, while upstream the Susitna drainage gets but a trickle,” begins this news release.

So how about it, drift gillnetters and Fish and Game, y’all agree?

I really don't know why the mat-su is suffering a lack of fish. I do know that years ago, while fishing fish creek, the biologists told us that the commercials didn't affect sport or personal use, yet, we had to wait two days for the fish to return. You take 90% of the available fish and how long does the return have to, make up that taken fish? Don't know but it would be nice to have some up the Valley way. Why don't we wait on the current study, in it's second year, out of three to prove genetics. Meanwhile, Bruce might be wrong but at least he is speaking up. I don't blame him. Can't say I agree, but time will tell. Wish more people would get involved. Ken

Or is it just Bruce Knowles? What is it about this guy? I mean good night man!! Hey Bruce, did your wife have an affair w/ a gillnetter or something? Thats the only explanation I can come up w/ as to why you hate gillnetters so much. I mean really, you say drifters "killed" 400,000 reds over by Kaligan Island, well most reasonable people like to refer to it as "harvested", killing a fish is when you trample through the spawning beds in your waders, snag a salmon while its in its sanctuary, and then release it in the name of sport. Another example is when your beloved non local commercial guides roar thru the spawning beds w/ their skiffs loaded w/ out of state clients, eroding the banks, muddying up the river, and be damned w/ the local sports fisherman and their kids who are scampering out of the way soaking wet w/ theIr fishing lines cut.
In a nut shell, borough mayor Curt Menard made a huge mistake bringing Bruce Knowles into the picture. Curt do you have any idea how many fishing families live in the valley, including the Palins?

Sockeye is a rat

Do you know how many freaking Alaskan families live in southcentral Alaska who like to have some freaking fish in the rivers to catch in the summertime?

Oh, that's right, Mat-Su does not really need any fish in our rivers cause it really belongs to the commercial gill netters.

More gutter talk from sockeye - down with the public having access to the public fishery resources in the state. Let's keep it in the hands of the few, the proud, the Cook Inlet cronies.

What is it?

Nerka, What is it about those darn Mat Su fish that they can't figure out how to get back to their spawning grounds when the fishery is specifically designed to make a corridor for them to get by the commercial fleet? How is it that the commercial fleet hammers the Kenai runs right in front of the rivers, but those fish can escape in numbers to further the run or in numbers that actually over escape some systems in some years?

Maybe it's because there is a problem on the brooding grounds of the Mat Su and the fingerlings aren't making it out to sea in the first place, so they can't return commercial fleet or no.

The fish of course belong to the state, not the commercial fleet or the sporties or the subsistance users. Some people like to harvest their own fish. More power to them. Somewhere between 10 and 20% of the people of the State get sport fishing licenses. The rest get fish from friends or go to the local store to buy it. That's where the commercial fleet comes in. They supply fish to the 80% or more people of the State who don't go catch their own. Those people have a right to get their fish too.

Start looking closer to home for why there is a problem with Mat Su runs. Maybe it's the exploding population in the Valley and the crowds on the local streams. Maybe it's jet boats on the spawning grounds or over harvest on the same. Maybe there is a problem in the brooding grounds so young fish aren't getting the proper nutrition. Maybe it's the Northern Pike released in Valley lakes by sport fishing enthusiasts. Maybe it's low water conditions or other natural phenomena. I admit, it's easier to blame someone else than to look closer to home, but it's not always the right approach.

It must be that those darn Mat Su fish are genetically attracted to gillnets and can't swim around the fishing corridor.
