That's Beluga!

The Marine Mammal Protection Act is there for a reason, along with all the other Acts of our time, but it seems to me that the Alaskan Native traditional ways of living and surviving are under more and more unnecessary evaluations by people who have a limited compassion or understanding of the complex economical logistics of the hows and whys of the current state of hunting practices of the Native world. More and more we are seeing televised shows on Alaska and its natural systems, including the beautiful whales and cute polar bears - seemingly to gather the attention of the world-at-large toward these amazing creatures which should be preserved for generations to come. Assuredely, no one has greater concern for the maintenance of all natural species than those who utilize them for not only cultural preservation, but for mere survival, as it has always been. This is why my heart sunk and stomach knotted when I saw that the beluga may be added to the endangered species list. I cannot imagine my People standing by the hundreds and thousands of belugas going by with just their binoculars, going, "Oh, how sad! We cannot hunt them. They are too beautiful!" I remember the excitement of hunting these creatures on the Bering Sea with my family and relatives. I love my beluga mungtak (muktuk). I just ask that beluga remain what they've always been to Alaska's Real People, food. Quyana cakneq (thanks very much).

Who is killing all the whales?

I am an Alaskan native (Inupiaq), Dutch, Irish and Cherokee. Fortunately I live in the largest city in Alaska, so I have an easy access to food and the other comforts of living in a home like everyone else here. I can just jump in my car, drive down the road, go to a store and pick out anything I want. The joy of living the American way! Now...it is sad to see and hear someone ramp and rave about a person's color of skin and hair and if they should be allowed to hunt food that they have been for thousands of years. The Inupiaq have NEVER hurt the population of the Alaskan animals. They respect the animals which they have to hunt for food. They respect the land and animals because they depend on it to survive every year, in a place way up north where most people do not want to live. Because, these beautiful people LIVE in the old ways is what keeps our land, air and waters clean for our animals to live in. It is people like ME and EVERYONE else on this planet that has hurt the Alaskan animals! Living in the American dream! With our cars, homes and trash and poisons that we dump in our land, water and air. The joy of having someone pick up our trash to dump somewhere or our poisons that is dumped in our city street drains which is dumped right into our oceans. The Inupiaq people never asked to live in the world most people live in today because they do not wish to live American dream! They want to live in a world that is clean but they see THEY can no longer live that way because of OTHER people who want to live the simple life in cities. It is people of many colors who is destroying the animals which many Alaskan natives depend on. For the past ten years Alaskan natives have tried to tell people that the fish, moose, seals and so many other animals that they are catching have weired tumers growing in them and animals walking around with rotting meat. These licensed people live in area of Alaska that they can go out and hunt and if you want to hunt a moose...get a licenses like EVERYONE else during moose season....go to a leagal hunting area and hunt your self one! Just make sure you pick up your trash before you leave.

10 would not have even raised a hair, but 70? That is over kill.

And we have tried to get a moose, but not rich enough to have the four wheelers that everyone else does, and our moose, tracked over "six miles on foot", the "traditional way to hunt", was bagged from under us by guys on four wheelers, 3 minutes in front of us. So back to beef at the Carrs store plus costing fuel to haul the truck and camper over 500 miles.

Lived in this state since birth over 42 years, and yes my dear, I pick up my trash, when ever I can afford to leave town, and in my own yard, and in my neighborhood, along with the dog poop when walking in the parks, if I make it that far, which has not been in quit a few years for either journey. Busy working to afford the meat at Carrs.

I under stand what you are saying.

Nenana is a different town than the small villages up north. Nenana is off one of the Alaska's largest populated highways, but that gives you no right to talk about the color of the skin and hair of the Inupiaq and Yupik people. Let alone what they are wearing and using like everyone else. Is it a bad for them to have little things compared to other people in the city? Not every village has simple things like most people have. I know a village that the only running water and electricity is at a school. But, you don't hear them complaining. They are not the reason why the whales are dying out today. I am talking about going way back to the beginning of you, me and everyone else in larger towns and cities. In order for us to have lights in our homes and put gas in our cars and trucks... slowly eats away our planet... for the past how many years? People never said anything because too many people want to live a simple life and while other people are making BIG money off it. For an example, look at the big oil companys...for years they were telling us the Alaska pipe line is safe and no one should ever worry about it polluting our land and waters, but people wanted to make billions of dollars instead of repairing it on a regular basis. While others are trying to keep up with living in todays society by using it. People are just now realizing how much it is effecting us. People everywhere have been killing off 1000's of whales for years, but when it comes to the Alaska Natives from many small villages catching their food of 70 whales this year, other people finally notices. Oh...and thanks for picking up your trash. (I wish everyone can pick up their trash) but still....it all goes in the ground... if you do not recycle.

The old days

Yes Sir, the old days were probably much better to the environment that when the industrial age began. That began the choking of our atmosphere with all the coal burning, and other techological advances". Yes the simpler life of the horse and buggy and farms would be better for our planet. However people died at a much early stage from the hardships. Also a horse was a more vauled assest than a woman, as we were just property, as we still are in other countries. In addition, truly, the planet needs a population control program, as humans (the whole entire species) is now the cock roaches of the world, but that will also raise a howl. (yes I put my money where my mouth is and got "fixed" at 28, I am not a breeder to society, now raising 2 children, by marriage, birthed from another woman) When it comes to the whales, well "we", the human population, were just stupid, as we were with a whole lot of other situtations. And still to this day, other countries hunt them under the ruse of scientific research, but that is another country that we can not control. This I do not understand when the whales, most of them, have brains bigger than ours. I would think that would say something for thier ability to be more than just "an animal". Instead of hunting them, we should be trying to do as much research as possible to actually learn to communicate with them (yes I dreaming for a day when we pull our heads out of butts and look a different direction) Also, try tried to recycle in the city many years ago, wrecked my back and overloaded my truck with paper stock, then they refused to take, even charged me to take it. I was recycling the recycled which was not acceptable to the system. Also, the land fills, over time, are being drilled and the methane is supplying power now as well, so energy from trash is a bonus. Yes humans take and take and take and rarley give anything back, that seems to be our "culture".
I have not seen Belugas but twice in 42 years in the wild up here, so the thought of taking 70 of them, when the overall population is dwindling just really, and I mean really, seems like overkill. I, as Euopean decent, being in the Americas since 1672, and intermingled with the American Indian, which "we were really really really stupid there", I do have a connection with this side of the planet, more so than the Euopean side.
Bottom line is, we are hungry too, but as were are decendants of the wrong chain, the "perks" of culture and substience is not in our reach. Here is 1 example of wastage. In Nenana, when I was a kid, the ruse of potlatch, the locals went out an killed a prize bull moose, out of season, put it on a flat bad truck, did not gut it, then let it rot on the town side side street in the hot sun. Nobody got into trouble, but if it were me, or my family, they would have thrown away the key, and the room. You can get more time in jail for killing a moose out of season that killing a human up here. Now, please, explain to me the culture waste as a viable thing to me. Explain to me why the state built housing for the locals and they tossed the tiolets out in the front yard and used the hole instead. Explain to me why instead of cutting up firewood, the local would steal from each other or people or bust up the furniture paid for by the state and burn that for firewood. Explain to me why I had to clean fecal material from the walls of the hotels when the AFN was is town when I worked at the hotels. Explain to me why the floors in home are torn up and killswere butchered in the front living room, leaving the blood to soak into the plywood floors so that the residence is no longer livable for anybody else.
And this is all in the most civilized modern village in the state, why did I personally witness this wasteage and filth? What real explaination can you give for this? I am not "just" a city girl, but a state girl. I love this state, and would not trash it like others do. Yes I know what a cigarrette ashtray is also, and freak out when I see somebody tossing thier butts out the window. There is a double standard, I just wished that instead of paying for my ancestors stupid stupid stupid stupid mistakes, that just a little of the benefits would flow both directions. I am sick of beef, is there a place in this state that you can get a moose without being ran over by fourwheelers? Been considering the road kill list.
Oh, and "I have had the experince of sharing", a plus and recongized heartfelt thank you for letting the locals bring thier fish wheels to the back of our purchased property in Nenana so that they could get thier fish from the river without dealing with the city government, and they did stick several kings on the door knobs of the trailer house as a thank you. Not all was bad, not all people were bad, but the bad did overtake the good. God I miss the real, and no racism in the wording intended at all, it was and is really called sqaw candy. And yes I have seen it made, fly's and all. You can't get the "real" stuff anymore.

The Arctic Sounder ran this story two weeks after it happened....and the Daily News picks it up two weeks after that? Notice the suspicious absence of a dateline on the article...it seems the faster the technology moves the slower they move around in the newsroom.

Belugas, and all other whales on our planet

Cultural rights and subsistence. Yes it is a struggle to live out in the middle of nowhere. But if you have the right color of skin, it is not so bad. I, on the other hand, am English, Irish, French, German and American Camache. My ancestory and "culture" reaches all the way back to the Vikings, specifically Sir Ralph whom worked for King Edward the III. Now, do you think, being of white skin, that I can, or could, in this society, under our "civiliation", could actually practices MY Culture rights of the Vikings? I think not, my happy butt would be rotting in jail. However, we can look the other way based upon race and location to take whatever we like with no repreuctions to society, civiliation, or the actual food chain of our planet. Just like the Vikings, rape pilliage and plunder and take whatever you want in any amount that you want. Talk about a totally ruse of abuse on the entire planet by a select few based upon race, and under the disguise of "subsistence and culture". Get a grip people, you no longer live in the 17th, 18th, 19th or 20th century and this planet is not as big as it used to be. Humans are not the only creature living on this planet and we need to start easing up on those vaulable beings that add life and balance to our overall food chain. But oh no...look the other way when it falls under "culture and ancestroy rights". Bahhhhhhhhhh, it is a bunch of bull. Put the Belugas and all other whales under the endangered species plan and quit letting the ruse of culture and race allow the extinction of our planets balance in the oceans and food chain be wiped out by eager greedy board villagers to overtake, over kill, over harvest just because a large "pod" of creatures showed up on thier doorstep. I would love to have a moose in my freezer, but I can not shoot and butcher one on the front door of my home in the City of Anchorage as healthy prize animals walk by my front door. But maybe if I had black hair and brown skin, I may only spend a few days in jail and not loose my house, guns, trucks, saws and knifes, whereas a a person of my decent, or any other non native decent would be thrown away and the room lost. 70 Belugas folks, 70.....we are not even allowed that many salmon in a year. What a absolute butchery of the dwindling polulation under the ruse of culture. Bahhhhhh another line of BS. Show some respect to the rest of the planet and it's creatures that sustain "all" of us, four legged, two legged, winged and finned residents. Oh, and just how many "modern" tools, clothing and gear was used to harvet, butcher and transport the bounty was used, bet it was alot, not the "cultural traditional" hand hewn, hand sewn, bone, skin and wood created from the land "tools of their ancestors". All I see in the picture out there in their levis, rubber boots or sorels, baseball caps, cotton T-shirts, gloves, steel blades knives, plastic buskets and seal meal bags and I bet the meat got stuffed into the electric freezers, not the permafrost ice cellars. Culture is a wonderful thing in this day and age, wonderful tools to harvest with, that all you have to do is run down to store to get, not having to spend years to make them from scratch, LIKE YOUR ANCESTORS TRADITIONALLY DID! If you want the old ways, then do it ALL THE WAY, not take what you like and leave the rest. You can not have both ways, however, that is exactly how we have it set up.

A gift

It is not about the skin, it is about ways of which you know how to survive – and they know how to take care of their family – with what ever means to live. A picture will tell a thousand stories - you only see what is in the picture. Compare your Viking history to the people who live in this region where subsistence life is necessary – which is a noble thing to do? I know nothing about the Vikings and I choose not to profile their history or by stereo type their livelihood (past or present). Do you ever wonder about who Jesus Christ is? Do you see the wind but see the earth moved by it? The needs of the people is directed by the Holy Spirit – another way of saying, “the animal is giving it self up to the people.” It is not a coincident but a gift. Might as well go out naked for the pictures but people choose to have clothes because of the first sin. Everything is a set up but not by man but by the one and only God, the creator of all things.

Love their smiles

I'm sure my comments will come off as naive and not at all cerebral (as some of the other posts), but the only thought I can express right now is grief.

Maybe it is the perpetually smiling faces of the Beluga whale, maybe it's the fact that I want to hug them every time I visit the Pt. Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, WA. Maybe it's the fact that when I read in the article that the whales seemed naive and not afraid of man, it made me sad.

While I understand subsistence hunting and fishing and I can appreciate heritage and tradition, that doesn't mean that it doesn't pain me to read that 70 Beluga's were slaughtered. Was killing that many necessary? Is it still necessary to kill whales?

I remember being in 2nd grade at North Pole Elementary School and during free time sitting in the little booth that had tape cassette's you could listen to. Sounds of the jungle, birds, etc. were available. I remember inserting a tape of whales and for the first time in my life hearing their songs. I sat in that little chair mesmerized by their songs. I still tear up (28 some odd years later) when I remember it.

I guess a part of me grieves to hear of something so gentle, trusting and beautiful being killed.

besides the legal hunting that occured on the Cook Inlet population...

Is there anyone around that remembers the beluga burger you used to get during the "kenai days" celebration? They used to hang a beluga up in old town just for fun... then there was the scanctioned whale hunts out of the mouth of the Kenai... and why is beluga river named Beluga River?... never mind the fish run that used to be there... Then look at Beluga Slough in Homer - why was it named such? Then theres that little road cutting the slough in half...

Blow them up, shoot them up and let them float out Cook Inlet with the tide...

Yes, the only solid info on a dead beluga is from legal Alaska Native hunts. Was that the demise of the population? I think it was the end of a long long stressor on the population... What other info did NMFS have on the population? Nobody is going to talk about an illegal hunt - opps, not a hunt, more like a slaughter.

Back when Hammond was gov., a couple of guys were bragging to another about going down to Twenty mile and shooting up some beluga. Just for the fun of it... just for the fun of it... how much of this occured prior to 1990? We all know about those yahoo rednecks...

So how did beluga get in the situation? The native hunts have stopped. Voluntary stopped hunting... One would think an increase in the population would of occured by now... but no, thats not what the surveys state.
And the aerial surveys is how the beluga is tabulated...

I once met a herring fisherman who fished the run in Kamishak... In the 70's and 80's they hated the beluga... "its eaiser to shoot at the white ones". he bragged... my dad said to me "stay away from them people... someday they will learn the beluga help them fish or they will rot in ...".

And then what about those aerial survey numbers? In Cook Inlets muddy water a white beluga is easy to count... but what about the young, they are grey. Is the best way to count them via an airplane and counting (with photo back up)? Its the only compariable way ... to compare from surveys back in the 70's ... but the grey ones, does anyone really know how many they miss?

The whole Cook Inlet beluga situation is just a sorry sorry place in history... Industry, legal hunting, redneck yahoos, etc. are all to blame...

Hum, should it be listed... After listening to the public comments yesterday... I say YES. Industry seems to just want to blame the legal hunts and animal rights groups just want to see them continue.

Ask another question: Do I want NMFS to manage another ESA listed species? NO. They are a fisheries organization, designed to manage and maintain fish stocks. What eats fish? What is a predator of fish?... humm, marine mammals... notably Steller Sea Lions, Harbor Seal and beluga etc.... Do I want them to manage a species such as Cook Inlet beluga, No and heck NO !

Well lets just talk about those stranded dead ones... were they hunted and the result of a struck and loss or was it another redneck yahoo just being a fool? Will never know... Even though investigating strandings is part of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, do you really think NMFS actively responded to strandings? I think it wasn't a priority to them. Remember their priority is to manage fish. Back in the 70 and 80's responding to a dead stranded beluga was more of a happen chance, "is it easy to get to" scientific opportunity to necrop a beluga... In order to comply with the MMPA and its "responding to stranding mandates", the NMFS service just asked employees to report and maybe investigate... It wasn't a priority till 2000. The funding went to a employee down in Juneau... They didn't care nor were they going tooo... unless sued...

Everybody who lives in Cook Inlet is to blame... It would be nice to see others step up to the plate and talk about them people we heard about who willing destroyed Cook Inlet beluga.

Its a tough call... Yes I want them listed, but I do not want NMFS to manage another ESA listed marine mammal species...

Sewage from 200,000 people likely is a factor

In today’s paper Mark Begich and Craig Woolard state that there is no evidence that the Municipality of Anchorage has environmentally impacted the health of the Cook Inlet Beluga whale population. True, there are no long term scientific studies of the cumulative affect of sewage discharge from a city that has more than doubled in size since the sewage treatment plant was built. As usual, people are flashing the "not enough data" signs to avoid doing the right thing. Reminds me of the way folks fought against smoking bans.

Some folks don't feel studies are worth the wait. Ask old-time Upper Cook Inlet setnet fishermen about the changes at Fire Island since the sewage plant went in. The shores of Shelter Bay out there used to be covered in green moss. Now the moss is gone and there is just mud. The fishermen say this is the effect of the sewage plant. And if treated sewage can kill plant life in the Inlet, it can affect animal life. Though of course, the opinions of fishermen that go out there all the time will be quickly discounted by the “experts” that never leave Anchorage.

How about the dredging ?

The shoals move around and it becomes a problem for the ships...

It is known that the sediment or is piling up between Fire Island and the mainland... I belive its just a part of nature or the general moving of and filling up of shoals in upper Cook Inlet...

But they got to keep it dredged in some areas... cause we need the industry ships to reach the port...

Belugas should be listed as endangered

Belugas should be listed as endangered species. Commercial industries have already caused the severe decline of Belugas. What “commercial industry” am I talking about? I’m talking about the poorly conceived, poorly regulated subsistence hunting of Belugas in the 80’s and early 90’s. People were flying in from as far away as Barrow to get into this hunt. That pushed past the limits of a 'subsistence fishery' and made it a commercial whaling industry.

Just ask any old-time northern Cook Inlet setnet fisherman/fisherwoman about the many dozens of struck, but never recovered, Beluga carcasses that were washed up on the beaches back then. This disguised commercial industry killed off much of the Beluga population a few decades ago. It’s time to label Cook Inlet beluga whales as endangered so their populations have a chance of recovering. If that kills off some industry, so be it.
