Scheduling School Activities

I want to clarify that it is our intent to try and schedule around these critical dates so that ALL of our students can participate in our events. It has NEVER been our intent, or request, to open up all Sundays to school activities, but to request a waiver for one Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, in order to avoid Yom Kippur. If ASAA refuses to grant our waiver, then we will schedule the Region 4 Cross Country meets on Friday, September 21.

We also will begin MULTI-YEAR scheduling of events hosted by the ASD far in advance so that we avoid in as many instances as possible these conflicts which are so easily misunderstood in our community.

Again, it is our intent to honor our mission, "To educate ALL students for success in life."

Black Out Dates

While this issue is currently focused on cross country, the issue is larger and is about if the school board is going to decide to 'black out' a wider range of days from the school (and activities) calendar...or not. At the school board meeting Carol Comeau and at least one of the board members stated that they thought they had already solved the issue and they were frustrated to be addressing it again. It's about the student athletes

Scheduling of school sports should be based on whether the ATHLETES are able to participate, not on what is convenient for parents, coaches, or volunteers. If Jewish students are unable to participate, then a major event such as "Regions" should be re-scheduled. The convenience of spectators should take a back seat to the participation of the team members.

Our Constitution is supposed to protect minority groups from being oppressed by the majority. Thus, the argument that it's okay to hold Regions on Yom Kippur because it only affects a small number of students misses the point. This is not a question of weighing the inconvenience of one group against another. The minorities would always lose if it were. It's about standing behind the principles contained in the Constitution and that our country was founded on. Remember that he Pilgrims (a religious minority) and other early settlers came here to escape religious persecution in England. Do we do what's convenient or do we do what's right?

A final thought: If Sundays are good enough for the NFL, why can't we have school events on Sunday?

Yes

I served on the ASD task force that addressed this issue several years ago. We recommended a process that treated all students equally, regardless of their religion - or even lack of religion. What Carol Comeau and the School Board are doing now is simply an attempt to enforce that policy. All that's required is some advance planning - looking at multiyear calendars that cover the most important religious observances of multiple religions, and planning accordingly when scheduling events. This isn't rocket-science or something new - this has been done for years in many other school districts around the country.

Correct me if I'm wrong

But isn't it a "public" school? I understand some people have a problem with the holidays that are currently chosen, but they do coincide with the Federal Holidays, and what is referred to as the "Observed" holidays for this nation. Not religion - nation.
I personally feel that if you want certain holidays off that are not "observed" then you should put your children in a private school, or home school them. This can be difficult (money-wise) but there is an old saying "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em". Also, if we give students these additional holidays, I'm sure there will be other religions and beliefs with other holidays that will be brought up. At that point - what will be the point of sending your kid to school? There is a holiday celebrated almost every day on this planet.

Kudos to Comeau and Friedman for addressing this issue. This has been a problem for our family several times in recent years with state testing and sporting events. The schools would never schedule even school classes on Christmas or Easter but do so regularly on our Biblical holidays. We ask for consideration of our convictions as well as the convictions of people of other faiths. Equal weights need to be measured on a fair and equal scale...our school schedule only considers Christianity's convictions and not the beliefs of others. As it is, our Sabbath is never considered in anyones schedule, but Sunday is exempt from almost everything the schools do. We are not kicking about that, but please consider our most sacred days. Thanks for bringing this up.

Let’s see, religious organizations don’t pay municipal taxes on their often very large places of meeting. Municipal property taxes support public schools. And now religious organizations want to control the scheduling of public school sports? There sure seems to be a lot of irony here. What’s next … are some religions organizations in town going to demand that police or firefighters cater to their schedules?

When Christian, Jewish, Muslim and other religious places of worship start paying their share of property taxes, then MAYBE this should be an issue. Until then, public schools should be religion transparent. It should be okay to schedule school sports on Sundays, Easter, Christmas, Yom Kipper or significant time periods of any religion. Sport is a non-denominational religion in itself. People need to choose between sport and their religion.

It is absolutely ridiculous that the Anchorage School District which is supposed to be non-religious and non-biased towards specific cultures would actually prohibit sports on Sundays while allowing sports on Fridays and Saturdays. Sporting events should be held regardless of religious requirements. That means holding at LEAST as many events on Sundays as on Saturdays.
