Traffic jam or just plain tacky

Editor,

Re: Bodybuilding championships on Saturday night

Where are the photos of the Overall winners? Did the photographer LEAVE before the end of the show?

Pictures of contestants in the dressing room . . . well ok BUT not one picture of the Men's and Women's OVERALL winner. This was quite a feat for these young people and not one picture. BAD deal for the winners. Not even an article with results.

We enjoyed reading about the Basketball championships but come on there had to have been room and TIME for a better coverage of this event.

How tacky DAILY NEWS.

I asked our acting photo editor, Jim Lavrakas, to explain how we covered the bodybuilding event.

Our sports staff had its hands full with the state prep basketball championships and Aces game on Saturday. We had no plans to cover any part of the bodybuilding competition.

But because photographer Bob Hallinen loves the sport, we found time to squeeze in some coverage of the events, which went all day and into the night.

We couldn't staff the evening bodybuilding finals because they conflicted with the state championship basketball games, so we sent Bob to the preliminaries earlier in the day. As usual, Bob produced some great "behind-the-scenes" shots of various muscled-up competitors.

On the Tuesday Sports cover, we ran two of those photos with a caption telling readers to check out the gallery of additional photos on adn.com. The caption included the names of some winners.

Some readers, like Anonymous, assume that any coverage of an event would naturally include photos of the winners.

Not so, as Jim explained: “We don't always shoot the ‘winners,’ as they often have their ‘moments in the sun.’ We also like the also-rans, back-of-the-packers, and neophytes, too!”

And now you know where “tacky” coverage comes from.
