A federal grand jury in Anchorage has indicted Robert Becker, 35, of Juneau, on three counts of illegal commercial fishing.
Becker made voyages to the Fairweather Grounds in the Gulf of Alaska between November 2004 and January 2005, catching 17,000 pounds of fish when the zone was closed to fishing for demersal shelf rockfish, according to a press release this week from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Becker falsified his landing tickets and his rockfish logbook to reflect the catches were made from open areas, prosecutors said. The fish were valued at nearly $25,000.
Each count carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
“An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt,” the press release adds.
