How did you like Brooks now?

After pages and pages of speculation on this forum, the verdict is out and Ramy's own account of the incident has been told.

He obviously did more than the cursory and brief spanking he first conveyed to race officials back in March.

It also appears by his candor and openness in the April, 26th interview, he does not believe his actions were in any way untoward or abusive to the dogs.

I am left now with more questions regarding the actions, intentions, and implications of this sad event.

It is a true observation that one editorialist offered several days ago, which indicated that animal abuse is contextual to the situation ones finds one self. To a musher, Brooks actions may not appear abusive; to a pet dog owner it smacks of abuse.

The dialog goes on with a new challenge for Iditarod and dog mushing in general.

Bottom line: the enemies on the outside may not be a fatal as the enemies within.

Brooks seems like a sad, pathetic little man.

Lets punish him through his sponsors.

"Brooks’ main sponsor is wireless phone company Cellular One. The company has sponsored Brooks for three years, said spokesman Craig Davis, who refused to reveal how much money Brooks gets from the company. 'Obviously, we are watching the situation,' Davis said. 'It is an issue that Ramy has to work out and go through the right process with the Iditarod.' "

misuse of dogs

as the iditarod is a world watched event i strongly feel that any musher who abuses any dog on his team should be disqialified and banned from the event forever. he orar she has given the sport a bad image for the whold world to see. it is hard enough to keep all of the spca people and the likes at bay with out giving them any ammo to be used to close down this great event.

Iditarod rules changes?

Heard Zach Steer on the radio a few days ago talking about some rules committee meetings where they are discussing possible rules changes. The only thing he mentioned was mandating more rest... Anybody know what they are considering?

Also heard a past winner interviewed on the same news show the next day. He proposed that any musher who has a dog die for any reason should be immediately withdrawn from the race.

He acknowledged that a similar rule was tried in 1995 but the rule that year allowed for some exceptions. That was the year that Swenson was withdrawn when a dog died when going through deep overflow.

The withdrawl of Swenson caused such an uproar that the rules committee soon changed the rule and an appeals board reversed the withdrawl.

Ironically, the following year 5 dogs died under the relaxed rule. Some of the dogs that died had just left checkpoints where they had taken their 24 hour layover. They had been fed, rested and cleared by the vets to continue. On the way to the next checkpoint they just suddenly dropped dead.

One of the dogs was in the team of Joe Redington. I don't recall the causes of death but none of the five was disqualified. Had the 1995 dead dog rule still been in place Joe Sr. and four other racers would have been withdrawn.

Perhaps it would be easier from a logistics and business standpoint to just withdraw a musher with a dead dog but is it fair to the musher? After all, dogs have died from being hit by racing snow machines, pissed off moose and other things which are beyond the musher's control. I don't see why the race marshall and vets can't investigate every death and make a ruling based on the evidence taken during the race and in a more detailed necropsy after the race.

All hope to profit from the race

I think IditaInsider was saying that everyone hopes to profit from the race. Princess Cruise Line hires Libby Riddles to hype the race to tourists. She's still profiting from racing in the Iditarod.

My take on the the Iditarod Educational program is that it's meant to turn animal abusing Iditarod mushers into heroes. The idea is to broaden the race's fan base. A larger fan base could well translate into more money flowing in.

Mushers claim to love their dogs. Many have had dogs die or become sick and injured in the Iditarod. Yet, they continue to particpate year after year. A person who loves his or her dogs wouldn't put them at risk.

Mushers make plenty!

Mushers make plenty for running dogs in the Iditarod. Besides the prize money, they use the race to sell dogs at higher prices, advertize their sled dog businesses, get paid speaking jobs, and on and on.

The Iditarod has always been about bringing in money, and it always will be.

So far, Stan Hooley has done an excellent job in getting the media to say that mushers are adventurers or sports heroes. When you think about it, that is quite a coup on his part. You can't compare a guy running across a football field and getting tackled, or a guy blitzing across a hockey rink and getting slammed by another player to a musher falling off a sled. Only Hooley could make people think a musher's fall was significant.

Stan Hooley for Governor!

From your many posts I can tell you must be a measly little know-it-all. Most mushers don't make a dime racing, Rachael Scdoris is not arrogant. There is no way you can compare a guy running across a football field and getting tackled, or a guy blitzing across a hockey rink and getting slammed to what a musher goes through in 10 days or so on Iditarod. Maybe you should learn to keep your foot out of your mouth or perhaps we could meet in person and I could show you how.

SOUNDED LIKE HE HAD SOME CONNECTION TO MAT SU COLLEGE AND LIVES WHERE THERE IS NO ELECTRIC BUT HAS SOME SORT OF PHONE WITH A POOR CONNECTION. SAYS HE THINKS HE KNOWS YOU. Sure, he can contact you by phone, but how is he following along? Having a phone, but no electric does not explain how he is reading this forum. To crack the valley trash jokes, which I still think are ignorant, he would have to be following along. For him to think he knows me, again he must be following along here. The only way he can do this is with electricty, an internet connection, and a computer. Further, my name isn't Lisa. It doesn't even sound like Lisa. And he sure doesn't know me. This is looking less and less like a discussion forum and more and more like the plot for a TV movie of the week.

It is getting pretty far away from a discussion forum about the Iditarod. It seems to me it started to stray off trail when the personal info was brought in by the above mentioned person.

Mushers don't matter

It honestly never occurred to me that while the mushers are making nothing, sponors, ITC, and businesses are! Duh! Of course, it is much different for those mushers who have the backing of the big sponsors compared with the middle of the packers, smaller kennel owners, and rookies. I would note that hearing Martin Buser speak this year at his kennel, I noticed a much more "competitive" edge or message. Watching footage of the race, I perceived more frustration on Jeff King's part than enjoyment. The fear of losing sponsors or the pressure to perform as a top ten musher must be incredible. And it is not like mushers have a lot of options in terms of the sport. For the most part, they have one distance race where the ends justify the means---and it is a much smaller "ends" than any sport where one athlete is so dependent on another.

What I think is so unfortunate---where I guess a lot of my curiousity comes from---when I first really "got into" the Iditarod, I was so impressed with the beauty of Alaska, the spirit of the dogs and drivers as they run across it--I was absolutely mesmerized. Iditarod seems , maybe because of where it is, so above all the bs one sees with other sports. My assumption was, of course, they will support each other--

I had a very idealistic outlook. Not to say that I still don't admire and respect what the men and women, and especially the dogs do---I'm just disappointed that the ITC has seemingly forgotton (or never really remembered) the importance--the true sacrifices dog drivers and their teams made for Alaska.

I hope they are able to act fairly and honestly in the Ramy Brooks case. And geesh...they shouldn't worry, no matter what, I plan on keeping my Insider subscription and buying the 2008 race T-shirt!

Eat_a_Dog---I don't know you, but I respect the hell out of anyone who is true to himself and his/her dream, regardless of the money waiting at the other end. I have students who have been more inspired by mushers and their dogs than multi-million dollar basketball and football players! (Look at all the money and scandal that goes on there---at least those players are PAID well enough, they can overlook some of it!)

I don't pretend to know EVERYTHING about the ITC as a result of this forum. I appreciate the input I've received on all sides. I was one of those annoying kids who sat in the back seat asking questions all the way to our destination. I understand more of the "recent" history of Iditarod than I did. Recent history seems to be slowing eroding true mushing history.......

Rachel Scdoris

Rachel also claims the ITC was initially hostile. Did she instigate that too?

I've heard her speak and read her book (reluctantly). I was not in Alaska the two years she ran, so I don't really know what public sentiment toward her was.

Scdoris and Hooley

She had an attitude when she approached the board. So maybe they weren't as nice as they could have been. But Scdoris makes a big deal about it as part of her sales pitch that she overcame adversity. She's pretty, too, so that helps.

She and Tim got separated. No one asks her how she found her way to the checkpoint alone.

Ask around. People will tell you that they think Scdoris can see far better than she lets on. There's no money or fame is seeing good.

Dorothy wanted to honor mushing culture. What exists now is a perversion of that. That's why Hooley is so essential to keeping the business going. Only he was capable of intimdating Medred and the other media people. Hooley was the one who is responsible for making people feel that they're not true Alaskans if they don't like the race.

He is the King of Crappa-Stan. He's a gem.

Scdoris came across as an arrogant person who wanted special help for attention when I met her. I tried reading her book too- I had to put it down when she started bashing all recreational mushers and any racers who questioned her.

Arrogant is a good word for Scdoris

The word around is that she hired several public relations firms to pump her up. She thinks no one should out-shine her.

Scdoris isn't going to answer any questions. I think she even had Tim and Paul sign non-disclosure agreements.

Big Bucks

Well, yes, I believe Joe did make $15,000 a head for a tourist group following the Iditarod racers!

I read an earlier post about record snow in Wasilla this year, yet the restart was in Willow anyway---seeming to leave Joe Sr. and Knik completely out of it.

Maybe if mushers and their canine athletes were more respected in the sports world there wouldn't be such an issue with important decisions being made only to insure the continuation of sponsorship etc. (If I'm following the comments correctly--there does seem to be a gross difference in the feelings of the mushers and the "business" Furthermore, it seems these differences in many instances are valid).

Money rules

Lots of people have been around a long time. They respect mushers only in so far as they bring in big buck to businesses. People who know what really goes on in the dog lots don't have a genuine respect for mushers. They only respect the money bring in.

In Alaska, if you don't respect money, you're on a bridge to nowhere. Money is the state religion. It's in the history. Think back to the huge number of people coming looking for gold.

I agree from years of observation that the mushers are pawns in the process of sponsor money making. For years, outsiders have been complaining that the Iditarod is all about the money and we Alaskans counter with, "Oh no, these mushers don't make much money". Well, it is no the mushers theay are talking about, it is the companies, media corporations, and sponsors they are talking about.

The poor, hard scrabble mushers talk all year in al the local bars about their Iditarod glory days. They will do anything, spend, borrow, or steal any amount of money to get another chance at the glory. Do the big businesses care? Not one bit. As long as there are mushers, there is an oppoertunity to make money. A Mackey is just as good as a King, just as good as a Buser.

Have no idea who he is but he identifies himself as UNDERGROUND VALLEY TRASH and does not have access to a computer,

If this 'UNDERGROUND VALLEY TRASH' has no access to a computer, is he sending these messages to you telepathically? Messages in bottles perhaps? And if he hasn't been following along here due to lack of computer access, is the moniker 'UNDERGROUND VALLEY TRASH' some huge coincidence? He? How do you know its a he? And if 'he' is so anxious to pay well for anything, I would suggest buying a better story than this one.
This is getting really ridiculous......

I think it would be interesting too. And I adored Susan as a woman. I enjoyed how she charged right into any situation regardless of what people thought the gender specifications were.

I am just not sure if there would be that much of a scandal though. Alaskans are a quirky bunch. By nature and by genetics. Look at how many have ancestors who came here as swindlers and 'working girls'? The rest of the world may hide their eccentric family members and bury the scandals. Alaskans are more likely to bring those relatives out at parties and put them on display as cheap, but extremely amusing, entertainment. You can also buy any number of books written by descendants of those who settled Alaska in the book section at most Carrs detailing the events of these scandals. We're Alaskan. We celebrate all the things that sets us apart from the rest of the US. Who knows? Maybe one day there will a book detailing this too.

Conflict of all interests

Eat_A_Dog, I really appreciate your insight as well. Like I've said before, I'm intrigued by the information coming from all sides. It seems the Iditarod did at least bring back the passionate feelings toward mushing that co-founders intended when it was conceptualized. (Why do I have a feeling I'm about to learn something different regarding Joe and Dorothy's vision?!) :o)
