Dog Blog

The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.
Your host: Mike Lewis is a little-dog nerd and the proud owner of Eddie and Jillian, a pair of Yorkies who think they're huskies, and Lucy, a sweet Chessie. R.I.P., Rusty. Contact mlewis@adn.com

Tell us about your dogs

What's your favorite dog story? It doesn't have to be the time your collie Lassie rescued your son Timmy from the well. Just share a story that illustrates why dogs really are our best friends.

PICTURE THEME OF THE WEEK
Send us pictures of your dogs with toys. Everything goes: sticks, pigs ears, hooves, Nylabones all count. As usual, if you don't have a picture on topic, feel free to post something else.

HitchHitchPICTURE OF THE WEEK
Last week's theme was dogs in the snow, and you sent in dozens of great ones. There was Shadow, the Afghan/Spit Rat from Homer; Tara, whose idea of fun is playing in the snowblower; and Seven, a pup who won the unofficial cutest head-tilt contest.

When the snow cleared, the picture of the week was of Hitch, the 9-month old Chesapeake Bay retriever who helps out with the shoveling. Nice job, Juli Hermanns
Runners-up went to Jack, owned by Luz Maskell; and Hank the Tank. Yeah, the picture is cool, but it was the "Tank" nickname bestowed on him by Maleia Grabinski that put him over the top.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Save emergency numbers in your cell phone. In addition to your veterinarian and your local 24-hour emergency clinic, save the number for the National Animal Poison Control Center: 888-426-4435.

I have a 4 month old 5 1/2

I have a 4 month old 5 1/2 pound Bichonpoo. She takes her bone and climbs on top of the laundry bags and snuggles up to chew it. It doesn't matter how high we stack the laundry bags, they can be a couple feet high she will find a way to get to the very top and snuggle down with her bone. It takes all she has with her little body to get to the top it is the funniest sight.

My dog is a yellow Labrador

My dog is a yellow Labrador Retriever and she is the best dog in the world and I love her to pieces but when she does this I almost pee my pants laughing when she gets really excited she runs around the house dragging her butt on the floor and she runs and full speed and slides when she tries to stop and one other thing that is really funny is when she farts and chases her butt she does not do it all the time but when she does it is hilarious!

How much we love our dogs

We don't have sled dogs anymore, but that doesn't mean we don't have dogs in our life. For the past nine years we've had Zak, a Chesapeake Retriever. About six years ago I got my first English Springer Spaniel puppy I named Teddy. Then, a year and a half ago I brought home our little girl Springer, Rosie.
Life with dogs is never dull. I can't imagine life without them. I would be lonely around the house all day without Teddy and Rosie. Zak goes to work with my husband. Where we go, the dogs go. They are our family.
A person who loves dogs, though, has that love tested often. Sure, cats throw up hairballs, but dogs have their disgusting messes, too. And things you have to do for them that take a strong constitution.
A couple of years ago, Zak got into some trouble outside and we discovered a big wound on his side, a big hole, actually. Like he'd run into a sharp branch or something. I took him to our veterinarian to have him patched up and it was discovered that the wound went deeper than we thought.
After our vet got him fixed up, I was given some papers with instructions on how to care for Zak at home. On the third page, where it told of possible side effects of his home treatment, it read, "Possible fainting. You, not the dog." I thought that was hilarious. It probably would have applied to my husband.
All three of the dogs are crazy for tennis balls. They are ball chasing machines. Our arms actually get tired from throwing balls. Once in awhile Zak will decide to eat one, then he throws up the pieces. Always at an inopportune time, like when he's in the back of our Ford Explorer, and we're driving in heavy traffic and can't stop.
Although it's awfully unpleasant to clean up the tennis ball vomit, if he didn't throw it up, it could cause a blockage in his digestive system and possibly kill him, so I try to think of that when we're cleaning it up.
Dogs eat all kinds of things they shouldn't and later puke it up in the very places you wish they wouldn't. I used to have an area rug under our dining room table that all the dogs ran to, to throw up on. Couldn't they have thrown up on the bare floor where it would be easier to clean up? Heck no! So I eliminated the rug.
Last winter I had an appointment in Anchorage, and when I got ready to drive home I stopped at my husband's work place to switch out the dogs. I thought I'd take Zak home with me and Teddy could ride home later with my husband. I already had Rosie in the back seat. I have a "barrier" between the Explorer's back seat and the cargo area where Zak rides. The barrier is kind of a plastic coated wire fence, to keep a dog in one area so he can't make you wreck as you're driving.
I knew I should have taken Zak out for a little walk before we left, but I was in a hurry and didn't. I paid for that wrong decision about two thirds of the way home. I was on the Parks Hiway, almost through the town of Wasilla, when I knew something was wrong.
Zak was whirling around in the back, whining. I figured he could make it the few miles home, but that was another wrong assumption. I was concentrating on the traffic around me when I smelled something really, really bad. I glanced in the rear view mirror and Zak was hunched over by the rear door.
I floorboarded the gas pedal, looking for a place to pull over. I saw the parking lot of an auto glass shop and made a hard turn on what felt like two wheels. I jerked the car to a stop and threw the gear shift into Park, as Rosie went flying off the front seat into the dash and tumbled onto the floor.
I was trying to get my seatbelt unfastened but for some reason it wasn't cooperating. It was like some bad dream where you're trying to run but can't. I finally got it unlocked and threw open the door and ran back to the rear door and flung it open, only to find it was too late. Zak zoomed out to finish the deed.
He left the most rancid smelling, slimiest, greenest, pile of goo all across the door threshold. All I could find for scooping was a flimsy piece of advertisement paper. I slid what I could onto the paper and hurled it out onto the pavement. It didn't all stay on the paper and part of it ended up on my hand.
So then I had it on me and nothing to wipe my hands on. Wasn't anything I could do except load Zak back up and drive home as fast as I could. It even got on the steering wheel. After finally making it home I had to take a rag and bucket of water and go over the whole back end of the car--and the steering wheel.
That night, when my husband got home and I was telling him about it, I think I was laughing hysterically. But then we were both laughing. You just have to have a sense of humor about these things.
I carry a roll of paper towels, a bottle of water, and plastic disposal bags with me now. Of course, I had to zip them into a gym bag so Rosie wouldn't rip up the paper towels. She's got a thing for paper items.
Sometimes we're trying to move some heavy piece of furniture up or down a flight of stairs, and desperately trying not to drop it, and the dogs are right there on the stairs with us, thinking they're helping. We go up one step, they go up one step beside us, crowding us.
Or we're trying to do something outside that's taking all our concentration, and Teddy's pushing a tennis ball at us, with a crazed look in his eyes, demanding we throw the ball. We kick it away a few feet and he's back with it in a nano second.
So our love for them is often tested, but then they show their love for us and we know all over again just why we have them. This story is from a chapter of a book I just had published titled "Idaho Girl."

Love it

That should be required reading for all prospective pet owners. People who go into dog ownership expecting all good are often the ones filling up our shelters with unwanted dogs. Thanks for the post. I'll be on the lookout for your book.

much-needed exercise

Easter Sunday during our afternoon walk I decided to give the puppies a treat. My car was kaput with a ruined engine and my daughter forbade me from hauling them in her fancy sports car. So we were left to our own devices. University Lake park is about 3 miles from where I am staying now, so we walked there so I could let Siopao and Shadow run off-leash. They were ecstatic when we got there and they could finally expel some pent-up energy. They ran out on the lake to my dismay, as there is a lot of standing water on the surface and some open water around the places where the creeks empty into the lake. During a moment of inattention when I got a phone call, I looked for the pups. I saw Shadow in the woods and Siopao was in the lake, swimming toward shore from only a couple of feet away from the bank. I admit that I don't know if she jumped in or fell in, but she made it out OK. When Shadow had had enough fun, he started whimpering, so I leashed them up again and we started our hour-long walk home. They were both filthy and tired when we got there, so I washed them off with snow before we went inside. I don't anticipate a repeat performance any time soon.

Springtime travails

A six-mile walk to get to and from the park? You definitely win the best-master award of the day. And as scary as thawing lakes are, it sounds like Siopao had that one under control. My guess is she jumped right in.

Speaking of springtime challenges, I had a comical one today. I decided that today would be my day to scoop the poop during our walk to my local park, so I brought a garbage bag and a scooper. Since the snow is soft, I wore snowshoes. On my way down there, a couple neighbor kids, 5 and 4, decided they wanted to join us. No problem, I thought.

Only once we got there, the snow was particularly punchy and soft. The Yorkies and the kids were miserable in the slushy stuff. About 100 yards into the park, Eddie, my 3-year-old, had had enough. He turned around and headed home, much to my dismay.

I couldn't leave the kids, so I decided to let Eddie fend for himself on our relatively isolated street while I found a shortcut to try to head him off. Hauling what was now probably 15 pounds of dog doo/snow, I ran into a soggy mess. Even on my snowshoes, I sank in up to my knees and fell to my side a couple times. The kids, meanwhile, were starting to panic and whimper. They couldn't budge an inch. I finally decided to pick the kids up and carry them to solid ground. That worked just fine until Jack, my 4-pound, 11-year-old pooch, decided he didn't like being so far away from me. With a kid in one arm, a bag of poop and scooper in the other, I watched Jack dive off a ledge of snow into what for him was neck deep slush, soaking his fleece coat and booties.

I still couldn't drop the kids, so I sloshed my way to firmer ground and flung the 4-year-old. I then scooped a now-shivering Jack out of the pool of ice.

I hope the neighbors weren't watching, because the thought of a 50-year-old with two Yorkies and two kids in tow fighting for his very life in a city park not 100 yards from his home is embarrassingly comical even to me.

Summer can't arrive soon enough.

breakup walks

When I was out of town a few weeks ago, the dog sitter told me that he walked his charges twice a day with prong collars. That was the only way he could keep control of up to seven dogs at one time. So I bought a couple of them and they are very effective. Otherwise I never would have been able to handle their strength on a long walk, especially if they alerted to something they REALLY wanted to investigate. After I unleashed them at the park, I noticed Shadow scratching his neck. His foot got caught in the collar, but luckily I was right there to help him out. At that point I removed both their collars to preclude any other stressful events of this nature.

first time off leash

One day early last summer my pups had their own yard to frolic in, the next they didn't. They even had to sleep in my SUV. I had to find some way to let them exercise. I did not yet know about the off-leash dog parks. They were so strong that it was torture to walk them on a leash. One morning about 6 am in the summer I took them to a ball field next to a lake to find no one else around. They had never been off leash out of the yard, so I didn't know if I could trust them to come back when I wanted them to. Holding my breath, I let one go first for a few minutes while keeping the other with me. Then I leashed up the first one and let the other go. Satisfied enough to take a chance, I let them both go together. What happened next made my jaw drop. Those two pups had never had the opportunity to run full speed before, and now they were in perfect side-by-side formation, running so fast around that park I couldn't believe it! The sound was like galloping horses on the hard ground. I just stood there and watched them run out all the energy they had built up being cooped up in the yard at home, with me, the owner, letting them in and out of the house and feeding them, sleeping in the same room with them, and that was the extent of our relationship. And so now, with my family scattered to the four winds, living in places that did not allow pets, I did the best I could for them. Living conditions are not the best, but the pups can sleep inside with me now. We are together and frankly, I can't imagine life without them. We will have a wonderful place to live in very soon, but I will never forget what it takes to keep my faithful companions happy and healthy.

thanks for sharing this, Krunch

Krunch, this area of the dog blog was one of the first started, and you wrote your comment in early April, so you may not ever go back and see my reply.

But once inawhile, when I have a bit of extra time, I go back and read some things I missed earlier. Today I went back to this section. And in this section, there are some of the most tender, heart warming stories from some of the regular bloggers that help me to see my fellow dog lovers in such a new and different light.

To read how dogs have filled a hole in our heart at some desperate time in our life brings tears to my eyes. I came up to Alaska in 1988 with a half a pickup load of sparse belongings and feeling total despair. My life was in ruins and like you, I felt so unneeded and unwanted by anybody, so lonely. I didn't know a soul and the only reason I came to Alaska from Oregon was because I kept having an old song going through my head from "Me and Bobby McGee" (you're probably way to young to remember that one) anyway, the words went "Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose. Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free"

Having nothing, really, except freedom, I wondered what to do in life, and decided since Alaska was a place I always wanted to see, it would be a good place to start. I didn't even have a dog to bring with me but I soon found myself entrenched in a life with dogs, getting to know and love them in a way I never had before. Since then, my love for them has only grown.

When I read Sonya's story about being ready to take her own life over a cliff, and then at the last minute having a picture in her mind of her dog asking her what about him, I saw a completely different side to this blogger we know as purple panther. Because from her most recent blogs, I had always thought of her as one tough minded lady, and I am shamed to say, someone who I wrongly considered an uncompassionate sort.

Now I have a completely different picture of her. And when dogblog wrote about being sad after a lost love, and his dog getting up on the water bed with him to comfort him, tells me how attuned to us and our thoughts and feelings our dogs are, and how they are capable of coming to us and comforting us in times of need. I've had that happen, too, and it was akin to a spiritual experience.

So through this sharing online of some of our most vulnerable times and how our dogs helped us through them, I have come to see everyone differently.

I also share your joy in watching our dogs playing and expressing their joy. Just so uplifting, isn't it?

Thanks for sharing.

wow

I'm glad I was alone when I read your reply. I was very touched. Thanks for sharing. I am quite old enough to remember "Me and Bobby McGee". The "54" after my nickname is a strong clue. :) I think I have said before that if anyone ever gave me an ultimatum, "It's me or the dogs," I would not hestitate for one second to tell that person "BYE BYE!! Don't let the door hit you on the butt on your way out!"

kudos

I applaud your dedication to twice-daily walks. That improves their quality of life immeasurably. I'm sure it requires sacrifices on your part but the payoff is obvious. They look like two happy pups.

Sacrifices?

Not really. Maybe I have my priorities a little skewed, but I know what they need every day because they depend on me for everything, so in my mind, they come absolutely first! If a family member needs something and it will interfere with the time I MUST spend with the dogs, the family must wait.

pure love and devotion

I met a man at Connor's lake a couple days ago who had two dogs with him. My dogs immediately went to greet one of his dogs, but from a short distance I could see the man protecting his pup from the eager greetings my pups wanted to deliver. When I got closer, I saw that his dog (not sure what breed) only had three legs; the right rear was gone. I asked what happened and he rattled off some complicated medical term that I'm sure he has repeated hundreds of times. Probably cancer. Then he said that the dog was also blind from diabetes! My heart went out to him. He obviously loved that dog so much that he was still determined to help him to live as long and as happily as he could. My hat is off to you, sir!

I can honestly say I've never heard of that one. A three-legged blind dog on a walk. Good for him.

Sled dogs rescue lost traveler

Two winters ago John Baker was returning to Kotzebue from camp with his dog team. Baker is one of Kotzebue's Iditarod mushers, and this team was comprised of dogs he was preparing for the race. A blizzard was blowing and visibility was so bad John could barely see his leaders. Suddenly they stopped. No matter how much Baker coaxed them, they wouldn't go, but looked off to the left of the trail. Baker ran forward to the leaders and saw how intent they were about whatever was over there. So he ran back to the sled, pulled the hook, and told them to go. The dogs ran about half a mile off the trail until they came to a lost traveler who was huddled beside his snow machine, trying to stay out of the wind. He had lost his way and decided to wait the storm out.

How did the dogs know he was in trouble? Why would sled dogs even care? They are bred to race. I see this as an insight into what makes the dog truly our best friend. They have our best interests at heart.

other dog parks

I have taken my pups to University Lake Park several times. It's where many of my doggie photos were taken. I would take them there before work, but in time moose became a problem, so I had to modify my morning schedule. It's a great park; very scenic with wonderful trails. When school is in session, however, there are ski clubs and classes and there seem to be frequent functions on the sports fields. The pups decided to join in on a soccer game one day; pretty embarrassing. Parking before 5PM is a problem, too. The final reason I don't go there much anymore is that the dogs have taken to exploring around the medical office buildings and the Native hospital on their own. As we were nearing the parking lot at the end of our walks, I'd be thinking of leashing them up, so I'd call them. They'd look at each other as if to say, "You up for it, sis? Let's blow this joint!" And off they'd go for 20 minutes or so. I know it was a lack of respect on their part, but I don't need the frustration and heart-pounding fear that makes me wonder if they will survive this little adventure of theirs. I did start to leash them up well before we got to the parking lot after that, but the parking is still a problem. I checked out Russian Jack one time, too, but it was really "blah" and NO ONE was there. The other two parks I'm not familiar with at all. We will continue to frequent Connor's Lake. It's great!

That would make a good poll

That would make a good poll and discussion topic this summer when more people start using the dog parks -- and the blog. "What's your favorite park and why?" I'd agree with your assessments of both University and Russian Jack.

Little dogs bring a whole set of different problem. While my guys are overly social, I never know if the big dog we're running into is nice or not, and I can't take any chances. So "unleashed" dog park or not, I leash them up when big dogs are around. Fortunately, they don't need the level of exercise a big dog does, so they get plenty on leash or off.

Most Outside dog parks have enclosed areas for dogs to play and stay out of trouble, and even smaller areas for smaller dogs. I'm not sure if that would fly in Alaska, where people are used to their pups having more freedom.

first impressions

Last summer I frequented University Lake park quite frequently with the dogs. On one of our earliest visits, we were down by the lake and the dogs were chasing the ducks in the water. Another dog owner happened by with a well-trained cocker spaniel. Compared to that dog, my pups are rednecks; carefree and mischevious. The owner of the spaniel would have none of my dogs playing with hers as she tried to keep her dog in line. When she scolded the dog, "I gave you THREE COMMANDS!" I just rolled my eyes and we vacated the area. Which brings me to the point of this narrative. I felt as though I had to control the pups more than I wanted to with the foo-foo dogs in the area, the ski clubs and soccer games that they could interrupt, so we didn't quite fit in there. You pointed out early in the blog when I told the story about the dogs on Airport road, that I "walked the line very well" when it comes to keeping them safe and just letting them be dogs. So I guess my point is that while I want my dogs to mind me so I CAN keep them from harm, I don't want them so intimidated with training that they must always walk behind me because I am their leader. I enjoy watching them run as fast as they want to, interact with other dogs, play-fight like the brother and sister that they are, play tag and ambush each other on the trail. (Ambush is my all-time favorite: One pup wanders off while the other keeps close watch. The one watching crouches down on the trail in what I call "invisible mode", then pounces on the other when they get within striking distance.)When they get out of line I am usually close by so I can discipline them. All I want is for them to not jump on people to kiss them; to watch where they are going when they're playing and to stay away from moose. Other than those things, I want them to enjoy life and in doing so, entertain me as they do every single day.

Probably a question for Robin

I'm fairly new to dog training, but the more I learn the more I realize how important a "perfect" recall is. I agree with you that there's nothing better than watching a dog romp freely through the woods. But without a perfect recall, there are risks both physically and behaviorally. We've probably all flirted with the physical risks: Moose, traffic, other dogs. But the dog also has to understand that you're the pack leader, and when they're allowed to decide when they want to come, they're not respecting you as the alpha.

The question is how to do it. I've been told to use treats that drive them wild. Bits of steak, hot dogs. To be honest, I haven't tried it yet. Hence, my guys' lack of a perfect recall. But it's on my to-do list, lol.

perfect recall

What exactly is meant by "perfect recall"? Do you mean an instant affirmative response to a command? Or something else?

Yes, I mean an instant

Yes, I mean an instant affirmative response. The behaviorist I was conversing with said she trained a dog to give up the chase of a rabbit in midstride when given the "come" command. Can I do it? Not even close. But I have seen something similar. In the summertime at the park, I'll occasionally see a guy working with two black labs. They are in incredible shape, and they chase some kind of toy the width of the park in tandem unleashed. They always sit before he throws it a second time, and they never wander off. Well, one day my guy saw them and took off after them. I was screaming and chasing and looking like a fool. But the guy with the labs just put his dogs into a sit and got their attention focused on him. My dog ran all the way up to them, and they didn't even look at him, let alone swallow him whole like he deserved.I was amazed and grateful. If I see him again, I'll have to ask how he trains for that level of obedience.

back to square one

They've learned to ignore my barking now, so I'll eventually have to get some professional intervention. They harrassed a moose for the better part of an hour yesterday despite my insistent objections. Very frustrating.

That is frustrating.

Too bad we can't get some more discussion on it. I would think retriever club dog owners would know a thing or two about run-ins with moose.

Oh, and yeah, evidently someone must not have liked the pic of your amorous duo in a family dog blog.

frustration

I don't know why I worked myself into such a lather yesterday, but I did. I guess I have a big problem with being ignored. As soon as the dogs chased the moose off the main trail and into the woods, they were happy. I didn't see where they went exactly, but the barking stopped, so I started walking back toward the main trail. Halfway down the trail, I looked behind me and there they were, trotting right toward me. I leashed them up without UNleashing my feelings onto them and we went home. So, Robin, like I told you months ago, I'll be calling you soon so you can get me headed in the right direction.

I'm seeing some improvement

in my puppies' behavior. I keep treats with me all the time and share them with the pups on the trail a couple of times each day. They know to sit to get a treat and to sit before we leave the house. And now they know to come when I bark orders!
PS: What happened to the funny picture I posted? Someone find it objectionable?

small dogs

I know what you mean about small dogs vs big ones. Shadow likes to pick on small dogs; he just likes to bat them around a little. He's not malicious, but at times he plays too rough. I think he thinks of little doggies as squeaky toys or something. Fortunately, I'm never too far away to call him off if need be, but there are times he embarrasses me. Another good thing is that the majority of "dog people" are understanding souls.

talking it up

Over the weekend I spoke to several people on the trails about the dogblog. No one had heard of it, but professed interest. One young lady even told me she was the web designer for "Anchorage Unleashed", who she said was responsible for the off-leash dog parks, and she had not seen the blog yet. I see the blog traffic is growing. It's one of the highlights of my day. #2 highlight, to be specific. #1 is being with my puppies on the trail!

Spreading the word

Thanks. You didn't have to resort to the billboard thing, did you? Walking around the trails with huge, two-sided placards strapped to you? That would make it difficult to run from moose.

Seriously, I appreciate it. I need to do a better job getting the word out myself. We've run a few ads in the paper, and it occasionally gets some love in an online refer. Today, the front page copy editor called me up and said he had a story about veterinary care and wanted to know if I wanted to add something to the blog so he could send people to it. I made it the topic of the week and added a poll. We'll see if anyone shows up, but I've noticed the poll is getting more than the average number of first-day votes.

I'm looking at it as more of a marathon than a sprint. If it can get a little better every week, we'll have a fine blog a year from now. Then someday, long after the Anchorage Daily Dog Blog has swallowed the news side of the operation, you, as president of the Poster's Union and me, as CEO, will laugh at this seemingly slow start.

Thanks again for your help.

the word...

No, I didn't have to use the billboards, but talking about the dogblog presents an easier way to speak to otherwise unapproachable people (out of my league) than asking for a moose report! Until the dogblog appeared, I could speak to any number of beautiful women with the opening line, "Have you seen any moose on the trail today?" Unfortunately, this ice-breaker didn't work so well in bars, so I remain alone. (I'm kidding; my puppies aren't allowed in bars, so I don't frequent them.) Now I can ask anyone (without being invasive) if they've seen the ADN dogblog, then tell them about it, as no one has said yes, yet. On another subject, I saw a beautiful red-tailed fox near the SW corner of Connor's Lake yesterday. The dogs chased after it, but it out-foxed them! Before the marsh thaws, it would be a great opportunity to try to see this neat little animal. Another patron of the park told me a few weeks ago that his dog was playing with the fox for a while one day.

spreading the word. right.

Great, just great. My one loyal dog blogger has an ulterior motive! And here I thought you were just hanging out to learn more about Yorkies.

The fox sounds cool, but I'll stay away from Connor's Lake. Another predator capable of dining on my dogs.

dreamer...

I have an active imagination!! No one has ever gone home with me except the puppies, and believe me, no one ever will. And the fox is just a little thing, not much bigger than your dogs!

DOG PARKS

Thanks for the response. I have a strong sense of wanderlust and would like to take a long road trip outside some day. I have wondered whether or not to take the dogs along. I don't have one yet, but if I did embark on this adventure it would be in a large motorhome. I called AAA and asked them if they could put together a triplog showing dog parks along the route. They had never been asked that question before, but it was interesting to them. I did my own research on the internet and found some resources, but then I saw a lower 48 dog park on a commercial and it was as you described; just a fenced-in vacant lot. The other thing that bothers me is that during some of the things I would want to do and see, the dogs would be confined to the motorhome and not having fun. I think I've concluded that I should leave them here with a sitter so their lives are not disrupted too much. But then I would miss them like crazy, but I think we all would be better off. Your thoughts?

Traveling

Sounds like you're doing a lot of research, which is the way to go. I guess it depends on the length of the trip and how long you anticipate having to leave your dogs in the motor home. It would have to be temperature controlled.

I personally couldn't leave my dogs for an extended period of time, so I'd figure out a way to do it. Perhaps you could drop them off at doggie daycares or kennels when you need time for other things.

I did spend 3 weeks on the road coming to Alaska with 2 buddies and my lab in a van. That was all camping, and it was no trouble at all. The most I had to leave him alone was maybe an hour. But in a comfortable motor home, I would think you could leave them unattended for five hours if you had to.

But I sympathize with your plight. It's a lot of responsibility, and it will cut into your time to do other things. Then again, you can't beat the company.

traveling

Those are some great ideas! If I left them here it would cost me $50 per day. When I was gone for 6 days last week, they adapted well to the new routine, but they couldn't wait to get in the car to go home. When we turned down our street, Siopao cried out she was so happy to be nearing home. So you're right. I'll have to figure out a way to take them with me. It's all about the puppies!
