According to USA Hockey, the governing body for the sport (south of Canada, at least), the Ben Boeke Hockey League at the Anchorage arena of the same name was the third largest adult league in the country in the 2005-06 season.
Our local rec/beer league circuit counted 1,340 registered players -- no doubt, 1,112 of whom habitually extend their shifts too long, because that's how beer leaguers roll. Anyhow, that leaves us just shy of No. 1, which is the Adult Hockey Association in Minneapolis, with 1,576 players. Coming in at No. 2 was Michigan Sports Enterprises in Fraser, which registered 1,363 players.
Props to one of our designers in the newsroom, Ben Harris, for providing the lowdown on the Boeke league's status. Ben's a beer leaguer and -- now, don't be haters, puckheads -- a ref.
So, be proud, you Ben Boeke beer leaguers (that's a term of affection, by the way) and remember the mantra of beer leaguers worldwide and one strictly followed by our own beer leaguer, former Aces beat man Matt "Top Shelf'' Nevala: Backchecking is for suckas.
