It seems many people who live in Alaska aren't from here. So where are you from? What you brought you up to Alaska? If you were born here, what brought your ancestors?
My Mothers family came from Italy in the 1940s. My mother, her brother and her sister are first generation up here. One has moved on to Califoria but the other still resides here in Alaska. We also have family in New Jersey and Italy.
I am one of 10 kids that are second generation in Alaska.
I was born and rasied in Alaska and I will never leave. its perfect up here. why do you think everyone is moving up here.
I was born in America. raised in Alaska.as well as Oregon and Washington.what i see going on in Alaska now as far as growth is progress to some a hindrance to others, it's all in how you want to see it, is the cup half full? or half empty?
i personally do not like the riff raff from outside that has brought an increase of crime and misery to our state.but what can we do aside from tar and feathers and a 1 way ticket back to the outside.lol i can see the neo libs cringe now at the thought of that.anyway thats my 2 cents.
Born and raised in Anchorage. 3rd generation. Original railroad family. I didn't follow in the family footsteps but a few of my cousins did. I spend most of the summer fishing on the Penninsula or in Anchorage, winters away at college. I hate being out of Alaska and wish every day that there were more job opportunites in the state for what I want to do when I graduate.
I was born and raised right here in Pedro Bay on Lake Iliamna. I am the last person actually born in this village, and after living in various places, including Anchorage, I settled down here, which proves that you can go home again!
My ancestors came to this land many years ago, I am Dena'ina Athabascan, and my heritage stretches back many years.
I've seen many changes in this small village, and in the rest of the state, some good, some not so much, but I am proud of our state and its' people.
I am from Willow, Ak. Born in Anchorage, raised Willow. Life long and always will be- genuine Alaska Native. Can't say where my grandfolks are from, but i believe here-Knik/Eklutna and Talkeetna area. My grandfather's last name was Theodore Wasilla and I am proud of it. My other was named Wasilla Stephan and proud of it.
I was born and raised in Anchorage (1980) and things have really changed since I was a child. I really believe that we needed some of the "bad" changes, such as WalMart, because it's not like we can drive anywhere else for that. But do we really need on in every corner in town?
We don't need one on every corner; Wal-Mart and their factories in China need one on every corner. How else could the Wal-Mart CEO make the $8,434.48 per hour he earned in 2004? (now.org)
Alaskans survived well before Wal-Mart's entry into Alaska in 1993. I still don't need them. Wal-Mart's aisles and aisles of doo-dads are unnecessary and their hardware is poor quality.
To help bring back better quality, American-made products and American manufacturing jobs, you might consider joining many of your neighbors who conscientiously shop elsewhere.
Anchorage has changed way too much since you and I were born. Every time I fly home I feel like crying. Half the places I used to play as a kid are buildings now (and none of them good or useful buildings).
Although I was born (way too long ago...) in Florida, I've been here in Fairbanks since 1968. My husband missed being born here in 1952, because his mom didn't trust the only OB/GYN in town!
The worst changes came with the Pipeline. Big Oil owns our state now, and I truly wish we could get it back.
I agree with you 100%. That was the biggest lure when we moved here; not only the beauty but how unique Alaska is. Especially Anchorage legislation sure wants to change that though. I think the legislation is what needs to change. They want to move forward but in doing so they are making Alaskan cities just like the lower 48.
I was born in Ohio and my husband is a former New Yorker. We came here because of the beauty of Alaska and hopefully less government in your face. The census confirms one thing for me: The drivers; drivers who have no idea of how to drive in snow and ice. I also find it disturbing those who move here want to make Alaska the way the place they left was. The building of so many homes in the Valley is ruining the beauty of the place. Anchorage is no longer a "last frontier" city but caters to yuppies who should have stayed where they were if they liked it so well!

Welcome or not?
I was born and raised in Alaska - Fairbanks 1964 - and have seen the changes which have occured throughout the state in the past 42 years.
Some of them I welcome, some I don't. I really wish we could keep some reminders of Outside where they belong - Outside!
We don't need strip malls sprouting up all over the place, we don't need more box stores than we have.
What we need are people who want to save this unique place from becoming something not unique.
