Election hangover

These post-election Wednesdays are traditionally a little slow-starting, but there's still plenty of day-after analysis to do. Knowles has a press conference in half an hour, and I'll try and post his comments later today.

I'll make it clear when I post the last comment of the blog, which won't be long now. Still some work to do first.

Anyone have thoughts on how the election played out by region?

Doesn't Halcro sound ready to run again?

Could she be a real Republican?

Not like the version today, someone who knows about the republic?

So she's against abortion, theres a simple American concept, since the beginning of time, and this nation. Why has life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, been so convoluted to mean any wish that makes you happy, no matter what the consequence to someone else. And the Court playing God, theres another concept with this issue, being argued today, with some judge making decisions, to expand some supposed right that exists to deny, life, liberty, or the pursuit. Of course the laws of Nature, God, and Man, have been confusing for a long time in Alaska.

Ya never know, she might Rock that legislative chamber, like William Seward did, in 1850, back when Republicans were Republicans, not Dixie Democrats, dressed up in disguise.

Calling her naive, might be right, and might be best, like Abraham Lincoln, who came out of nowhere, to espouse the republican principals of Thomas Jefferson also. Read that Republican's speeches, clear, concise, and to the point.

She'll do fine, and never any worse than the last few in this seat, they didn't call themselves the Corrupt Bastards for nothing.

And 70 Federal Agents can't possibly be wrong either.

And go ask one, he'll also explaine to you, the Ku Klux Act of March 20 1871, law for reform of the democratic party. Putting Grants portrait on the $50 for a reason.

you have no clue

how Governor Palin works.

She was in a campaign.
Not a vicious rumor mill of who is going to be what, get what, etc.

I am sure her transition process and search for good people probably started today.

The losing sides ( and there were so many) really need to let it go and give her some breathing room.

Alaska has just been set free of 50 years of Special Interests.

Except one: The People of Alaska!

  November 9, 2006 - 6:51am | jacekone

Nobody has a clue

how Gov-elect Palin works or thinks. She was silent on the issues and has an inconsequential record. Larry Sabato has stated the woman is a "crapshoot" (ADN quote). Haven't heard of Larry Sabato --- I'm not surprised.

You know, signwaver, your obtuse comments never served your candidate on this forum. You are the exact reason we didn't like her.

  November 9, 2006 - 8:45am | signwaver

jace

we won.
you are a johnny come lately to this blog.
my comments hit you right between the eyes.
ouch.
truth instead of campaign b.s.
the race is over guy.
Tony lost in a fair fight.
She had you, ADN, VOT, sold out Republicans, VECO, Big Oil, and so many others against her.
Thumped em all.
She only had regular people ..Alaskans....in her corner friend.
And she won huge.

Palin Voters

Are a lot like Murkowski & Bush voters. They don't want to be challenged to think. They don't want to be intellectually intimidated. Like the quote in today's paper - a woman said she liked Palin because she could understand her - she didn't talk down to her. It's easy to understand slogans. It's another thing to understand concepts.

Sarah Palin is Libby Riddles. Right place, right time, but she isn't the one who deserves to be the first woman governor. Fran Ulmer is so much smarter, so much better schooled in governance, and would've made a hell of a Governor.

  November 10, 2006 - 7:36am | aktraveller

Thankfully Ulmer didn't win

She was a nicer Halcro. Always acted like she was so much smarter than the rest of us. Classic liberal thinking of knowing what's best for us, the poor unwashed masses. We are too stupid to wear seatbelts, so make it a crime. Good riddance I say. I'll enjoy the next four years while you get full from eating your words.

  November 10, 2006 - 1:56am | Black3

Fran who?

Guess Tony can join her at the University now; the place defeated Democrats go to jack up their PERS high three.

  November 10, 2006 - 10:16am | mike_l

I thought

the university was a better place than the federal prison where a number of conservative republicans will be retiring to shortly, after trying to jack up their own personal incomes through illegal kickbacks and "consulting" fees.

  November 10, 2006 - 12:26am | bmcdaniel9

Agreed

Enough said.

  November 8, 2006 - 6:16pm | Emperor

How do you know?

She didn't say anything concrete for months, and when she did it was stupid.

I hope for the best, but I expect the worst. Palin may very well be the worst Governor this state has ever had, and we've had some bad ones.

I can't believe how stupid people in this state are. These are the same idiots that elected Murkowski four years ago, and now you think Palin is better? The only reason she isn't as bad yet is because she doesn't have the experience. In time she'll be every bit as arrogant and mean spirited as all ultra conservative Christian extremists... welcome the American Taliban.

  November 9, 2006 - 8:07am | Black3

In Victory, Magnanimity!

One of the great things about our republican democracy as opposed to parliamentary systems is its winner take all nature. Once you have your fifty percent plus one, you can safely afford to ignore the other side for two or four years.

I don't share your contempt for the Alaskan people, but then I'm not an enlightened liberal. While I disagree with them on almost everything, I have a great deal of respect for Knowles people; they are superb political operatives. They have crafted coalitions that twice got them elected to statewide office and twice, thrice if Fran is included, produced very credible showings for decidedly Blue candidates in this, now, the Reddest of Red States.

Alaska is a very wealthy and tolerant State; we can afford you. No one is going to do anything to you, but no one has to do anything for you either. Now you can join all the others trying to return those drapes you bought prematurely.

Minority voices need to be heard

Just because the election is over doesn't mean that those of us that don't like the candidates from the two major parties should shut up and go away. That's exactly why they are able to force their partisan self serving garbage down the throats of the people they are supposed to SERVE.

It doesn't matter if it's Democrats or Republicans in charge, it will be business as usual. Deals will be cut in private, you vote for my pet bill and I'll vote for yours. Never mind the fact that both bills should never see the light of day. The fact that Palin and Knowles are the best the two parties can offer as candidates should speak volumes about the shallowness of their combined intellect.

The fact that nearly half the eligible voters couldn't be bothered to show up to participate in this farce masquerading as an election should tell you what people think of the process. The fact that more people voted against Palin than voted for her should tell you what the majority of people REALLY think of her.

Now that the election is over, so is the debate. The minority won't be heard from again until the next election, because once elected, people like Palin quit listening to anyone other than those they agree with. Just look at the comments from the Palin supporters, telling me to 'shut up and let it go', they won and they own her.

It's not about liberal or conservative, red or blue, it's about leadership and intellect. Things that are missing from both major party's candidates at every level.

  November 8, 2006 - 7:35pm | arajack

Sadly, I have to agree

Abortion, gay rights, stem cell have become the Republican dragons to chase rather than dealing with the original ideals of the party. And the Demos have done the same. We will be looking forward to the likes of Jerry Ward in the Palin administration. The RGA spent hundred of thousands skirting and actually breaking state laws. Dan Fagin dedicated a total of 6 solid hours Friday and Mon spewing his radical garbage free of campaign money. Halcrow lost any respect I may had for him at the attack on Knowles at the debate. My wife and I have been GOP for decades, but before any other elections we will switch to non-parisan, mainly because of Sarah Palin. I know from experience that our state will survive some how, so just have to wait and see. I truly hope that the FBI get busy. It will clean out a lot of these self-righteous jerks. Kyle, I add to my thanks to you. I just saw a commercial on TV that plays often. The guy flys off a bridge and someone says"he can fly". An old man says "but he can't swim". I think of Sarah when I see that.

  November 8, 2006 - 8:12pm | Emperor

Clowns to the left of me...

...jokers to the right.

Knowles is the consummate politician, he will do or say whatever is most expedient to garner favor. I don't trust him and never have.

Halcro's problem was that compared to those other two bozo's he came across mean. People aren't used to politicians being blunt and honest. I think he was spot on with his positions, unfortunately it required too much thinking and courage for people to vote for him.

As for Jerry Ward, even if you disagree with him, you always know where he stands. He'll give you a straight answer. Palin won't, which is why I have no respect for her.

  November 8, 2006 - 7:15pm | signwaver

Emperor, you obviously

work for Big Oil or the Cruise Ship industry.

You never will get it.
You don't recognize something real.

Alaskans are not stupid.

Yout false sincerity about hoping for the best is phony.

Zip it. Palin won and not by a fluke.

In 3 months she took out a sitting Governor and a 2 time ex-Governor.
And she never went negative.

Best of all, you and your kind dont own her. We do.

  November 8, 2006 - 8:19pm | alasscan

Not stupid?

Can you spell Murkowski?

Governor Elect Palin over came some hurdles. She managed to become the first woman governor of Alaska and did so while garnering less than half the votes. No easy feat. Congratulations are very much in order!

I did not vote for her, I voted for former Governor Knowles, however I will support her as the Governor.

I cannot forget that she so avidly supported the former administration when not even his own party would consider re-electing him. I remember her words of praise about the President as well at a time even the most conservative of his party were not expressing total support. Neither instance impresses me with great judgement.

I also believe in women's rights, which is part of the reason any woman was able to run for any office. If you can be entrusted to run our State why then should you not be entrusted with having the control of your own body?

I do honestly wish her the very best because I want the best for Alaska. I know her to be a nice, decent and gracious person and I would never wish her other than the very best. There are many people I think are nice, decent and gracious but simply would not want to be the governor.

You own her?

Knowing that you or anyone else thinks they might 'own' her is alarming to say the least, I would not want anyone that others perceive to own or believe they own in any governing position. That indeed is the epitome of corruption.

Also, a VERY honorable mention goes to another great lady who showed grace under fire. Good job Diane Benson! Forty percent of those that voted obviously felt the same way. We look forward to seeing you the political future of Alaska.

Good luck Governor Elect Palin, may you and yours be healthy, and happy and restore the same to the great State of Alaska.

The blog has been interesting and entertaining. I may not have agreed with some, but I enjoyed reading all the opinions of others.

Thanks Kyle! A job well done.

  November 8, 2006 - 7:59pm | Emperor

signwaver you obviously ...

...don't have a clue which is typical of Palin supporters. If you or your ilk had an original thought it would die of loneliness.

No, I don't work for the oil or cruise industry, and haven't for the 30 years I've lived in Alaska. Nor have any of my family. The fact is however, that more people owe their livings to the Oil and Tourisim industries than anything else in this great state of ours.

Mark my words. Four years from now we still won't have a gas pipeline contract, we still won't have a subsistence solution, we still won't have adequate health care for the majority of citizens, our schools will be worse than they are today and our economy will be stagnate. But we can rest easily knowing that gay couples won't have equal protection under the law, creationism will be taught in our schools, and our judicial system will be over flowing with those dangerous pot smokers.

Rural Votes Didn't Count

From a cursory examination of Districts 37, 38 and 38 Knowles took the Western Alaska vote by a very high percentage.
What frankly scares me is that Sara Palin won so handily with the urban vote. The lesson, sadly, is that the Rural vote doesn't carry any sway in a 3 way race anymore. If it had been a head to head, we might have had some influence.
But mark my words, the Republican strategists will be able to say that Sp didn't pay any attention to the Bush, and still won, so why waste any time or effort on those voters in the future.
Of course it remains a Democratic stronghold (all those village votes for Don Young notwithstanding).
Ron Somerville for FishComish? Has anyone heard Sarah say otherwise? I certainly havent heard her demand his resignation from the game board. Count her response to his horrendous comments as a bellwether.
Nice job on the Blog, Kyle.
Mark in Bethel.

It only took 1 vote.

Alaska should be thought of as whole not regional. Sure each area has its issues. But all of us must be considered equally.

Fun last night

The Mat-Su Democrats were a happy lot last night at the Mat-Su Resort party. Great news for moderates all around the country had us cheering and celebrating big time.

Too bad most Alaska voters aren't hep to the national zeitgeist. But I did enjoy MSNBC's panel raising their eyebrows about Palin's win and Alaska not "getting it" (the desire for balance of power) and Matthews explaining the oddity to them, that "they are still a conservative state up there."

We had some terrific Dems elected around the state, some wonderful feminists, and many champions of the middle class. It brought a smile back to my face that I've been missing since 2000. I expect I'll be smiling for at least two more years and will have many, many more "positive" things to say about my government.

And the good news out of South Dakota was glorious for women everywhere!

Good bye, I've gotta go order my "Don't blame me, I voted for Tony" sticker.

  November 9, 2006 - 7:05am | turdball

I still have my "Wheres Tony" sticker

from when he was governor. But I think I will just keep my Palin sticker on my car. I am sure the Tony sticker will be a collectors item sooner or later.

Lessons Learned

This Election has really opened my eyes & taught me much - it has been a very inspiring, educational, and fun ride. Open the door to Politics or Religion, and WOW; things get really intense.

I have learned that the "extremist"; either on the far left or far right, accomplish nothing except create tension & resentment; since both aim is to "control" the other; it is in the "middle of the two", where true change occurs.

I have learned that both; Republican & Democratic - Conservative & Liberal really need each other to find balance & neither is any good without the other.

I have learned that Religion can bring out the best or worst in people. Depends on whether you are living it, or acting it - love does not judge.

I have learned that too much Freedom without boundaries can be dangerous.

This blog has been "life in action" - what an enjoyable trip - thank you to all that have blogged - it's been great!

Lastly, I did vote & campaign for Tony - he didn't win - that is ok, it was not meant to be. I want to extend a "congrads" to Sarah Palin & her crew, and sincerely wish you the best of luck the next 4 years. (hand-shake)

Take Care All!
