Streaking Shark: Matt Carle

It’s probably not much consolation given the San Jose Sharks’ 3-1 loss at Anaheim on Friday night, but Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage extended his points steak to four games, his longest such stretch in the NHL.

Carle assisted on Craig Rivet’s goal, which gives Carle 2-3—5 totals in the last four games. He’s also 3-3—6 in the last six games.

For the season, Carle leads all rookie defensemen in scoring with 9-22—31 totals.

What A Night For The Nanooks

The UAF Nanooks have endured a nightmare of a second half to the hockey season – heading into the CCHA playoffs against Western Michigan on Friday night, they were just 2-14-2 since Christmas and had lost six straight games.

And with less than two and a half minutes remaining Friday night, they looked like toast. They trailed the Broncos 2-0 in Game 1 of the best-of-3 series. But then Ryan Muspratt scored short-handed at 17:38 of the third period. And just 65 seconds later, defenseman Darcy Campbell, who had been in the penalty box when Muspratt scored, tied the game 2-2. Four minutes into overtime, captain Lucas Burnett cashed in on a rebound of a shot by Trevor Hyatt of Anchorage.

No Bout For Benson; Notes

Erstwhile Alaska Aces winger turned Peoria Rivermen call-up Hans Benson made a fight-free debut in the American Hockey League on Thursday night, though he did get his lumber up in someone’s grill in the first period and made the perp-skate for high-sticking.

That Benson, the Aces’ chief of police, didn’t find any takers in Peoria’s 3-1 road win against the Iowa Stars wasn’t that surprising.

First, the game was tight throughout, courtesy in part to Peoria (and occasional Aces) goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu, who stopped 26 shots. Secondly, the AHL doesn’t track ice time online, so it’s hard to know whether Benson played much more than the occasional shift. Lastly, Iowa isn’t exactly “The Fight Club.’’ The guys in the Stars lineup Thursday, including center Dan Hacker of Wasilla, have totaled just 11 fights all season, and no one who dressed entered the evening with more than 71 penalty minutes; Benson engaged in 12 bouts and racked up 205 penalty minutes all by his lonesome in 33 games with the Aces.

Carle Doubles Up

San Jose Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage supplied his fifth two-point game of the season Wednesday in a 4-3 shootout loss to visiting Nashville.

Carle, 22, scored a power-play goal in the first period and also had a power-play assist in that period to give him 9-21—30 totals in 59 games – he’s the NHL’s leading scorer among rookie defensemen.

Carle logged 22:38 of ice time, fired two shots and blocked two shots. The two-point game was his first since he recorded two assists against Florida on Oct. 31. Carle owns a three-game points streak with 2-2—4 totals and has five points in the last five games.

Gomez: Fifty Is Nifty

New Jersey Devils center Scott Gomez of Anchorage on Tuesday night hit the 50-point mark for the sixth time in his seven NHL seasons. The point that raised him to the half-century mark was an assist, of course.

Gomez’s backhanded pass from the right boards to the high slot set up Jamie Langenbrunner’s one-timer for the only goal in New Jersey’s 1-0 win at Pittsburgh, which also marked goaltender Martin Brodeur’s 12th shutout this season.

Gomez owns 10-40—50 totals in 56 games this season and 113-327—440 totals in 532 career games with the Devils, the only NHL team he has ever played for.

Parker Headed Back To His NHL Beginnings

After goaltender Ty Conklin was traded from Columbus to Buffalo earlier Tuesday, a second Alaskan among the four in the NHL acquired a new address –- winger Scott Parker of Eagle River got shipped from San Jose back to Colorado.

Parker, 29, played in Colorado from 1998-2003, then the Avalanche traded him to the Sharks for a fifth-round pick in the 2003 draft. This time around, the Sharks received a sixth-round pick in the 2008 draft for the 6-foot-5, 225-pounder who remains one of the league’s deadliest fighters. Parker didn’t register a point in 11 games with San Jose this season – he’s been plagued by back and ankle injuries – but accumulated 22 penalty minutes.

Trade Means Traveling Time For Ty

Goaltender Ty Conklin of Anchorage went from near the bottom of the NHL standings to the top Tuesday, when he was traded from the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Buffalo Sabres just before the trade deadline.

Conklin, 30, was moved in exchange for a 2007 second-round draft pick. He moves into Buffalo’s back-up role behind Ryan Miller, the 2001 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner out of Michigan State. The back-up job to Miller opened up Tuesday, when the Sabres traded goalie Martin Biron to Philadelphia. Biron will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and makes $2.1 million this season, while Conklin comes at the bargain price of $525,000 per.

AK Pucks: The Fightin' 49ers

Welcome to Sunday, Bloody Sunday: Turns out some Alaska boys threw down across the American Hockey League on this day.

So let’s move straight to our introductions of the Fightin’ 49ers.

First up is Hartford Wolf Pack rookie center Brandon “The Bomber’’ Dubinsky of Anchorage. He’s no gentle soul, and Sunday he dropped the gloves with Bridgeport defenseman Tomas Malec in Hartford’s 5-1 road win. Dubinsky, who owns 12-15—27 totals and 82 penalty minutes in 55 games, also was +1.

Rink Roundup -- The Pro Game

San Jose Sharks ookie defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage notched his eighth goal of the season Saturday, a power-play marker in a 7-4 loss at Calgary that ended his team’s road trip from hockey hell.

The Sharks completed an 11-day, seven-game journey that took them to St. Louis, Nashville, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Calgary. And they don’t have much time to rest when they hit home – they entertain Anaheim on Monday and Nashville on Wednesday.

Carle logged 22:44 of ice time Saturday, a big number for him lately. Of course, 8:17 of that came on the power play alone.

Seawolves Keep Slipping

The UAA Seawolves’ regular season-ending 5-0 road loss Saturday night to Minnesota-Duluth – that cemented the Bulldogs’ series sweep and assured UAA last place in the WCHA -- continued the team’s second-half plunge.

UAA was 8-8-2 before Christmas, but has gone just 4-11-1 since. That’s shades of last season, when the Seawolves went 4-11-1 before the holiday break, but just 1-15-2 afterward.

Under second-year coach Dave Shyiak, the Seawolves have gone a combined 13-20-3 (.403 winning percentage) in the first halves of the last two seasons, but a mere 5-26-3 (.191 winning percentage) in second halves.

Becks Leads Our Rink Roundup

OK, this is probably a bit of hockey hyperbole, but we couldn’t blame Chris Beckford-Tseu if he was in a state of shock.

After all, the goaltender who has split the season between the Alaska Aces of the ECHL and the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League has largely been the odd-man out in Peoria’s three-headed goalie situation. Yet Becks started his third consecutive game Wednesday, a 4-3 shootout loss to Omaha that left him 2-0-1 in that three-game span.

Gomez: Equal-Opportunity Assist Man

With his usual first-line co-conspirators sidelined – Brian Gionta has a bad groin and Patrik Elias was saddled with the flu – New Jersey Devils center Scott Gomez of Anchorage again proved he’s an equal-opportunity assist man.

Gomez provided the primary assists Tuesday on both the Devils’ goals in a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers off Exit 16 on the New Jersey Turnpike. Gomez set up defenseman Brian Rafalski’s first-period goal and did likewise on Zach Parise’s game winner in the third period.

That gives the King of Airport Heights 39 assists this season and 10-39—49 totals in 52 games. Tuesday, he went +2 to improve his team lead in that category to +10. The two assists marked the third time in the last four games Gomez has furnished two assists, and he owns 2-12—14 totals in the last 13 games, plus he is +5 in that span.

MacMurchy Suspended 10 Games

The ECHL on Tuesday handed out its longest suspension of the season, docking Alaska Aces rookie winger Ryan MacMurchy 10 games for his attack Saturday on Phoenix RoadRunners defenseman Chris Cava.

MacMurchy jumped Cava from behind late in the first period of the Aces’ 6-3 win in Phoenix. As Cava retreated in his own zone to play the puck, MacMurchy pursued him and punched Cava in the back of the head. After Cava fell to the ice and covered up, MacMurchy fired at least one -- and if memory serves, perhaps a couple -- punches at Cava’s head before Phoenix’s Mathew Deschamps jumped into the fray.

Aces DNA All Over Peoria Win

Several guys with Alaska Aces connections came up big Sunday, when the American Hockey League’s Peoria Rivermen – the team that is, um, usually goal scoring-challenged – racked up a 7-3 win over Grand Rapids.

Rookie winger Kevin Croxton, called up from the Aces last week, contributed two assists, which gives him 1-3—4 totals in three games since his promotion – he’s also +4 in that span. Former Aces winger Charles Linglet, who owns 3-2—5 totals in the last four games, furnished his team-high 25th goal. And former Aces winger Cam “The Big Rig’’ Keith bagged his fifth goal of the season.

Cracking The Code

A couple of on-ice incidents involving Alaska hockey Friday night – one in Hartford, Conn., the other in Phoenix, Ariz. – illustrated a couple of concepts that make up hockey’s “code’’ and how players police each other.

In the Hartford Wolf Pack’s 3-0 win over visiting Worcester in the American Hockey League, Hartford rookie center Brandon Dubinsky of Anchorage was issued a game misconduct for being the third man in an altercation. Turns out, from a story in the Hartford Courant, that Worcester’s Brad Staubitz continued punching Hartford’s Dale Purington even after Purington went down to the ice during their second bout of the night. That’s when Dubinsky jumped in and tackled Staubitz, which earned him the gate. The “code’’ in hockey fights dictates that when one participant is knocked to the ice, or falls to the ice, the bout is over. The guy on the ice is usually defenseless in that position, and for the guy on top to keep throwing punches is considered cheap. Dubinsky no doubt knew he was done for the night when he jumped in, but he no doubt earned respect in his own locker room for coming to the aid of a teammate.

Becks Comes Up Big

In his first start of any kind in more than two weeks and his first start in the American Hockey League in more than a month, occasional Alaska Aces goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu backstopped Peoria to a road victory Saturday afternoon.

Beckford-Tseu, 22, stopped 27 shots in a 3-2 win at Omaha to improve his numbers for the Rivermen to 7-4-1 with a 2.25 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. Former Aces winger Charles Linglet assisted on one of Peoria’s goals and Aces rookie winger Kevin Croxton, called up to Peoria earlier this week, played but did not register a point.

Alaska Is Everywhere

So much Alaska action happened around the hockey world on Friday night, it’s hard to know where to begin.

We’ll start with the NHL and the King of Airport Heights – New Jersey Devils center Scott Gomez bagged two assists in a 5-4 loss to Sidney Crosby and Company (they apparently play under the handle Pittsburgh Penguins). That gives Gomez 10-37—47 totals in 50 games, and he’s plus-8 – he leads the club in assists and plus-minus. He’s been quite the dynamo on the draw of late – Friday, he won 10 of 17 face-offs. Meanwhile, rookie defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage was minus-one with two shots on goal in 17:54 of ice, as his San Jose Sharks got shut out for the second straight game, falling 3-0 in Columbus. Sharks winger Scott Parker of Anchorage played just four shifts.
