276-pound halibut brought in but no derby ticket

Press release from the Valdez halibut derby:

Catching a large fish without a derby ticket can happen to anyone at any time. An angler who has been visiting Valdez for years put his boat in the water and did “just a little fishing,” according Mike Waller of Easy Freeze.

“He was just getting his boat in the water and didn’t expect to catch that big a fish where he did,” Waller said.

Youth-only fishing day on Homer Spit, Saturday, June 4

For Immediate Release

A portion of the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon will be open to fishing only by youths 15 years of age and younger on Saturday, June 4, from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. The youth-only fishing area will be posted. The remainder of the Fishing Lagoon will be open to fishing to all anglers of any age.
