An Alaska Wildlife Troopers press release says advertisements aimed at selling big-game trophies are increasing despite such sales being illegal. Here's the release troopers put out--

In recent months, the Division of Alaska Wildlife Troopers noticed a continual growth of advertisements for the sale of big game trophies. This trend is growing with the popularity of online classified and auction sale sites.

Alaska Administrative Code 5 AAC 92.200(b) prohibits, among others, the sale of: any part of a bear except an article of handicraft made from the fur only; big game trophies which are defined as the mount of a big game animal in a lifelike representation made from any part of a big game animal; big game animal skulls and horns or antlers that are still attached to any part of the skull.

Thursday's trooper dispatches

Type: Negligent Driving

Text: On 3-27-08, Joseph L. Cyril, age 43 of Angoon was cited for
Negligent Driving after the vehicle he was operating reportedly ran into
the porch of an Angoon residence on 3-17-08. Cyril fled the scene and
community and was served upon his return to Angoon on the state ferry.

Kenai police log for Tuesday

A traffic stop led to the arrest of a Soldotna man for failing to appear in court, Kenai police say. See the first post.

At 8:40 am following a traffic stop at the Kenai Spur Highway and Aliak, Kenai Police arrested Ross M. Grubb, 42 yoa of Soldotna, for Driving While License Canceled and a Soldonta AST $500 warrant for Failure to Appear. Grubb was transported to Wildwood Pretrial Facility.

At 10:42 am following a routine traffic stop at the Kenai Visitor’s Center, Kenai Police issued a summons for Failure to Insure Vehicle to Melissa R. Montgomery, 19 yoa of Soldotna.

At 12:24 pm following a routine traffic stop on Cedar, Kenai Police issued a summons for Failure to Insure Vehicle to John P. Covich, 26 yoa of Kenai.

Case number: 08-22618
Type: DUI
Text: On 3/26/08 at approximately 0255 hours the Alaska State Troopers
stopped a white 1993 Ford Explorer for a moving traffic violation.
Investigation revealed Jennifer Holsclaw, age 29 of Wasilla, was
operating the vehicle and under the influence of alcohol. Holsclaw was
arrested and transported to MatSu Pretrial where bail was set at $300.00

Stabbing in Sitka

Four people are dead after a stabbing in Sitka. Here's the AP story:

SITKA, Alaska (AP) — Sitka police say four people have died after being stabbed.
The Sitka Daily Sentinel reports one person was arrested at the home where the victims were found Tuesday.
Police say three people were found dead inside the home. A fourth victim later died at a local hospital.
No information about the victims has been released.
Police Chief Sheldon Schmitt said they received a 911 call from a cell phone at 11:44 a.m. The caller said he was outside the home and told the dispatcher that there was a "guy outside stabbing people."

Plane crashes near Fairbanks

The Federal Aviation Administration is reporting a plane crash near Chena Hot Springs this weekend. No reported injuries, but the craft was substantially damaged, the agency says. The cause remains unknown.

Tuesday's trooper dispatches

Troopers are investigating a snowmachine fatality out of Tok. The driver appears to have not looked before entering the road, where he got hit by a truck, troopers said. See the log out of Tok at the bottom.

Case number: 08-22164

Type: SAR

Text: On 3/24/08 at approximately 1114 hours, the Alaska State Troopers
were notified of a possible Search and Rescue (SAR). Moses Duny, 37
yoa, of Marshall was traveling from Marshall to Nunapitchuk. Due to a
faulty GPS, Duny was sent off course and into an unfamiliar area.

Kenai police arrests for Monday

An incredibly honest wanted man flagged down a cop and turned himself in, Kenai police said. Check out post No. 3.

At 12:52 am, following a traffic stop at Peninsula Ave. and Bluff St., Kenai Police issued summons to four minors for Minor Consuming Alcohol. The minors are as follows: Nicholas Calma, 18 yoa of CA, Matthew McNamee, 19 yoa of UT, Jacob Musselman, 19 yoa of CO, and Matthew Wichorek, 19 yoa, of Anchorage. Wichorek was also summonsed for Minor Driving After Drinking.

At 2:24 am, Kenai Police made contact with Tyler Bleazard at the Safeway in Kenai. Bleazard, 21 yoa of Soldotna, was summonsed for Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor.

Juneau drug ring busted

Here's a story from the Juneau Empire on two arrests that police say put a serious dent in the capital city's cocaine trade:

Police say they have busted a cocaine smuggling operation in Juneau with the indictments of two men by a grand jury.

Vonnie Williams, 44, and Aaron Washington, 42, were charged with operating a continuing criminal enterprise, a felony that carries a sentence of 20 to 99 years in prison.

The 36-count indictment handed down Thursday also charged the men with aiding and abetting misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Police said Williams and Washington enlisted others as couriers as early as March of 2003 to smuggle cocaine from Anchorage and Seattle into Juneau.

Police crack 30-year-old murder

Here's a story with Alaska connections from The News Tribune in Tacoma:

For 30 years, the killing was unknown and unsolved. On Monday, Pierce County sheriff’s deputies closed the loop of decades, and arrested a brother and sister suspected of conspiring to kill Joseph Tarricone, who disappeared in 1978.

“There’s the karma train, coming back around,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Tarricone’s remains were discovered June 4 by construction workers building a shopping center in the Summit area, just outside of Puyallup. The remains were unidentified bones, wrapped in plastic.

Police: Heroin fueled robbery spree

Michael Ray Stith, surrounded by police, K-9 dogs and a SWAT team, ended a four-day string of robberies when he shot himself dead early Monday morning, according to Anchorage police.
Stith, 50, was wanted on 14 felony counts in connection with the weekend robberies and a carjacking that police say were feeding a heroin addiction. Officers following an informant’s tip caught up with him at about 4 a.m. at a recreational vehicle parked in a lot at Providence Alaska Medical Center, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.
He killed himself moments later, before police could talk to him, she said.

Text: On 3/24/2008 at approximately 1950 hours, the Alaska State
Troopers in Ketchikan were notified of a missing juvenile in the woods
off Brown Dear Road in the city of Ketchikan. The Ketchikan Police
Department and KVRS were dispatched to the scene. At approximately 2200
hours, the juvenile was located by KVRS staff.

Type: Reckless Driving

Text: Patrick Hal Iler, 24 of Juneau, pled guilty to Reckless Driving
stemming from an incident occurring on October 13, 2007 at Mile 2 of the
Haines Highway. Iler was contacted for after Alaska State Troopers
radar clocked the vehicle at 56 mph in a 35 mph zone. Iler was charged
with Reckless Driving and was fined $300.00.
