Have you ever had to break up a fight between two dogs? How'd you do it, and how did it work out for you? Do you have a battle plan in place, or do you just wing it as the case dictates?

I've heard several stories over the years about people getting bit trying to break up a fight between two otherwise friendly dogs -- dogs you'd never think had the capacity to bite a human. In fact, I've been bit a time or two doing the same.

I'll start with a brag. Eddie's going to be in the nosework demo at the state fair on Sunday, Aug. 26. I'm quite excited about it. From the day I started training dogs 8 years ago, I always thought it would be cool to have one participate in the fair's Dog Day.

Pretend, for a moment of silliness, that the Summer Olympics were for dogs. Same events, just with canine competitors.

Put Eddie on the ground unleashed, and he's the coolest dog you ever want to meet -- great with people, great with dogs, large and small.

Put him on leash around other dogs, and he'll almost invariably snap at them, Jillie excluded. Even worse, if he's on a human's lap and another dog comes up, he'll flash his teeth when they get 2 feet away and snap as soon as he thinks he can reach them.

We had an incident at the house two nights ago that upset the balance of the pack for a couple days. It was a true Keystone Cops episode: Jillie stole Eddie's toy and Eddie set out in hot, angry pursuit. Normally that's not a problem -- Jillie is faster and sneakier than Eddie, so she can either escape safely or give me time to intervene and put away the toys.

Rain, rain, go away. I was up especially late last night and suffered the consequences this morning -- the dogs started pacing at their normal time, and I wanted to sleep in.

For those of you who have had senior dogs who may not have aged as gracefully as you would have liked, how did you keep them happy? And for those who haven't, treat it as a hypothetical question.

I'm envisioning a dog who, despite pain meds, just can't handle anything beyond a short walk in the yard. How do you keep their minds active for their last years? And is a diet change enough to keep their weight down?
