The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.
Your host: Mike Lewis is a little-dog nerd and the proud owner of Eddie and Jillian, a pair of Yorkies who think they're huskies, and Lucy, a sweet Chessie. R.I.P., Rusty. Contact mlewis@adn.com

I thought I'd take a break in the Eukanuba Q&A's in case anyone has some news to share.
I'm on vacation in California and am going through dog withdrawals. Mine are farmed out to two different dogsitters, and I'm pretty confident they're being so well cared for that there will be noticeable disappointment in their eyes when we return. :p

We've had a nice success with Lucy. She's one of those dogs who gets very excited at walk time. She'll raise her front legs and hop in anticipation. She'll bully her way to the door to be first out.

Icy walks: Eddie avoids the groomed path because it's too slippery.
Ugh. I hate conditions like we're having right now. I don't mind the cold. I can even tolerate the wind. It's the icy footing that sends me over the edge.
How do you deal with it?

Sports editor Beth Bragg is working on a story on Christmas gift ideas for sporting types, $50 and under.
She came to me about ideas for skijorers, and I was forced to give her the deer-in-the-headlights stare. I've only done it once or twice, and I was bad at it.
Any skijorers out there? If so, what would YOU like to receive for $50 or less?
Reply here or email Beth directly at bbragg@adn.com.
Thanks!

This year's AKC/Eukanuba National Championships are scheduled for Dec. 17-18 in Orlando, Fla., and you can bet Alaskans will be represented at the prestigious conformation, obedience and agility competitions.
Last year, the Dog Blog featured Q&A's from 14 Alaska entrants, and it made a big splash here in the days leading up to the show.

We've had some changes in our pack over the last few weeks that have brought on a variety of training challenges.

On a past "training talk," the owner of one of the smartest dogs I've run across -- Tula -- asked if we'd ever had a topic on dog tricks. To the best of my recollection, the answer is no. So here it is!
If you've got a trick you're particularly proud of, share it here. Bonus points for explaining how you taught it.
Here's the one maddiemaerun shared on training talk. She wrote it as a suggestion for teaching my dog, Eddie:
