First Friday Rambles

By MIKE DUNHAM
Flotsam? or Jetsam?: a found object in Gretchen Patterson's solo show at International Gallery of Contemporary Art.Flotsam? or Jetsam?: a found object in Gretchen Patterson's solo show at International Gallery of Contemporary Art.The Rambler was checking out Fairbanks galleries on July 2 (full report at a posting below) and so missed the Anchorage hoopla. Jazz up a slow Monday

So everyone's out of town combat fishing except you. At least you won't be in bumper-to-bumper traffic trying to get home tonight. And it's not like the arts scene is totally shut down, despite the fact that it's Monday and, for most of us, a holiday as well.

The Tap Root Cafe, at it's new location, 3300 Spenard Rd., site of the former Fly By Nightclub, is promising an evening jazz jam session starting at 8 p.m. This is free and local musicians are invited to sit in.

Susan Joy Share's solo exhibit, "Animated Library," won't officially open at Out North, 3800 Debarr, until July 9. At that time she'll give a talk and sign copies of her first book. That is, her first book in the normal written and published sense. Billed as a "book artist," most of her work has played with the concept of bookiness, as explored in paper, fabric, ceramic and other media.

First Friday Rambles: Fairbanks Edition

By Mike Dunham

The closure of two commercial galleries rocked the Fairbanks arts scene in the past year. But the survivors continue to host popular First Friday events - including today's.

Survivor number one is the Alaska House, 1003 Cushman St. Founded by the late Claire Fejes, the walls still hold a few treasures from Alaska's old Masters, a Sydney Laurence, a couple of George Aghoupaks, a print by Fejes' friend Rockwell Kent. The Alaska House is also a repository/clearing house for people disposing of collections of old Native art. I saw an ivory totem from the 1930s.
