The University of Alaska Board of Regents announced Friday that the University of Alaska Anchorage launched its first ever startup company, Zensor™. The company was established in February 2013 by UAA Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies Dr. Helena Wisniewski, and faculty inventor Dr. John Lund, a UAA electrical engineering professor.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013 at 2 p.m., a Boeing 727 donated by FedEx, will land at Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage after its short flight from the Ted Stevens International Airport.* The pilots of the 727 will do up to two flyovers before landing at Anchorage’s in-town runway.
Public viewing of the landing will be available from the Northway Mall parking lot, just off of Penland Parkway.

The story Dawnell Smith tells about playing in her first scrimmage as a Rage City Rollergirl is one of determination. After doing time as "fresh meat"—the term for a new derby recruit—she got her chance to play jammer, the skater who threads her way through walls of wheeling flesh and elbows for a chance to break out in front of the pack and earn points for her team. It's physical. Concussions-and-lost-teeth physical. "I don't think I made it through once," she says.

Alaska's state government can afford to spend about $5.5 billion in fiscal year 2014 (July 2013 to June 2014). That's the most recent estimate of the level of General Fund spending the state can sustain over the long run, from a new paper by Scott Goldsmith, professor emeritus of economics at ISER.

UAA may not have a football team, but it has a hockey team, and in preparation for the Kendall Hockey Classic this weekend, the campus is hosting Homecoming 2012, daily activities to capture student enthusiasm and focus it on the hockey match-up Friday and Saturday nights with Canisius College, the Air Force and UAF.
