Return to East High grad wins major theater honor
10 July 3, 2008 - 3:59pm | writestuff
Not to burst anyone's bubble but a "major theater honor" would be a Tony, Drama Desk or any other legitimate award that is competitively open to all performers. An award open only to a certain demographic (as stated eloquently below by another poster) isn't competitive nor is it "major". That being said, I am all for diversity in the entertainment field and if he can break through to the ranks of Denzel, Samuel L or Don Cheadle (to name a few) then the best of luck. We need more minority name actors. But I would ease up on that "how great he is" angle until he actually wins an award based on performance against all other performers (not just those in his skin color demographic).

You know who you are. I didn't know this guy but its pretty awesome what he has accomplished.
Also to one of the previous posts "chops" are a way to say abilities or skills. If you read more in general or did crosswords you may have figured that out on your own...just a thought.

I know what it means from usage. But I'd like to see a little etymology. Where did it come from? Why is the ADN using words that are not in the dictionary? As for crosswords....no thanks. Not my style.

I didn't know Cedric well, but went to East when he did. He was well known in the school as a brilliant talent, beautiful singer and a great guy, not to mention a smart and hard worker. I can't think of anyone more deserving!

Pull the subject of the article away from Cedric but I think an Major theatre award would include nominees from all actors and not just one demographic. While not an exact figure taking away 60-70% of what would be the competition for an award hardly seems fair.

The "major theatre" award for all demographics is the TONY award. This is just something put on by the NAACP to honor african american's.

Well done Cedric. My kids will go to East and I admit to being a bit apprehensive but this goes to show that there are some high performers coming out of the school. But this also has alot to do with this young man's personal drive and ambition and I applaud that as well. I know your mother is proud. Congratulations.

What is a chop? I don't find it in my dictionary, which is the same one every ADN reporter has on his/her desk. I'm going to look in the AP's online stylebook right now. I'll bet it's not in there.

The word is use in theater and music as slang for a performer's skill sets.
