Return to Baby news strikes a chord
August 31, 2008 - 6:57am | sxpfox498
Congratulations to the Palin family for their Son!
It's true...people on welfare should stop having children when they are on welfare! I see too many people on welfare get good $$ every month for every child they have! They get to go to the hospital on tax payers expense, get their taxi fares paid, get their hotels and food paid for and they have enough money to go bingo! They get thousands of dollars every month on their Quest cards to buy food and get their heating fuel covered by energy assistance. Many people in the villages chose not to work because of these free handouts! SAD!

Please make time to "rock" your new child
Dear Gov. Sarah, You are a woman of the 80's. And that is something to be proud of. So please remember your legacy years when choosing a name for your child. A very fitting 80's name for a boy would be Eddie, for a girl - Edie. And for either - a middle name of Van. Please consider the names "Eddie Van Palin" or "Edie Van Palin" for your new child. "And the Cradle Will Rock"!!! Cheers Super-Gov !!!

Sarah's pregnancy is, of course, her own business.
However, many young women that see Sarah's status as a 'popular' govenor (educated, attractive, perfect family, etc.) as an answer to their own problems - having a baby cures all. They think someone else will pay for the child's upbringing (the state, welfare) and this is usually what happens. I've seen this happen numerous times and it's always the children that suffer in the end. Girls need to be taught the difference between their ideology of Sarah being a Greek Goddess of some sort, and the reality of their own situation. In other words, don't breed them unless you can feed them.
Nonetheless, don't be surprised if there is a mini baby boom in Alaska after Sarah's baby is born. Get out your checkbooks dear taxpayers.

Those doggone unwed teens taking all my tax money
Bonjo, yes Sarah Palin at 44 does seems irresponsible and being so popular may result in more younger women having babies. I have no problem with more babies; however, their family and those pregnant need to take responsibility and not me. The teens should let their parents raise their kids like the Palin's.

Is it just me or does it bother others that our top public official has no clue of the issue of over population which is around 6.5 billion and counting. Gobal warming, pollution, many of the armed conflict that presently exist, all of these and many more of the world's major problems can be traced to the fact that there are just to many of us. When are we going to see the leadership that is so desperately needed on this issue. Until our elected leader show some concern for the most pressing problem of human kind the future does not hold a lot of promise for those five Palins. I for one have lost some respect for our governor.

I adopted a girl 11 years ago, I was 48 yrs old and my husband was 51. It was a two parent job; I had days with the baby and he had nights. Today, she is a very healthy child (leans towards being a health nut) we live out in the bush. So, people out there no matter where the baby came from, get a life.......

We are clouding the issues with sexism. If I remember correctly, she doesn't believe in abortion, so what would the public's reaction had been if the announcement was the Gov. terminated her pregnancy because she is the chief executive officer for the great State of Alaska. Come on people, you can't have it both ways and it's not your decision to make. Let's stick to the real issues and let the Gov. do her job of uniting our State and improving our economy.

Back to work the next day? Not all women can do that
I don't see any problem with the Palins extending their family, but the gov. should not have made the ridiculous comment about going back to work the next day. Is she suggesting that all women should be able to do this? She has a unique situation - a husband who is home a lot, and several teenage kids who can take care of the smaller ones. Not to mention ample resources for childcare.
As a pregnant mother working at home with a 1 year old, getting ANYTHING done work wise is a struggle. Luckily my husband does try to adjust his own work schedule to give me some work time each day - but it's exhausting to deal with household duties, childcare, a job, and pregnancy. If these things don't tire you out - it's because you've got way more help than the average person!
So while that's great that she is having a good pregnancy at age 44, it's annoying that she's perpetuating the "super woman" standard that the rest of us don't have the energy or resources to meet.

Most companies won't LET you come back to work the next day, even if you wanted to. I know of someone who didn't have enough leave time to stay off the required 6 weeks, yes I said REQUIRED, to recover from childbirth. So they told their HR department "Well what if I came back anyway? You can't stop me if I feel fine." They said "Oh yes we can, don't push it." So the girl ended up on leave without pay for a period of time until that 6 weeks was up.
Doctors don't even want you to DRIVE for two weeks after having a baby. How could ANYONE go back to work the next day? Maybe Palin said that to let people know that she'd bounce right back from having the baby and be able to do her job, not to negate other women. I guess if we think about it in that context, it's not so bad.

She went in to forward emails and phone messages...
According to the article in the Frontiersman, Palin went in to work the next day just to forward emails and phone messages to her home. Not really a work day, more like a work visit. I think it was very wrong of her to imply that she went "back to work" the next day.
I agree with you, babies/children are exhausting. Do yourself a big favor and don't compare yourself or your life to Palin. She probably has way more help than you do, more in line with a celebrity with baby nurses, nannys, housekeepers, chefs. I want to vomit anytime I hear a celeb complain about being "tired" after having a baby.

I am happy for them. When I was 7 months pregnant, I had already gained 50 pounds! I was a gigantic FATSO! I stuck out---obviously pregnant. Oh How I wish I could look like the Gov, all cute and pretty pregnant. Well, I have to hurry with this letter, my baby needs me. She hates it when Im on the computer. Good thing I dont have to attend to the State.

Don't get too caught up in appearances. It can be very deceiving; weight gain, fetal weight, and a woman's torso length can affect how pregnant a woman looks. Besides there's always months 8 and 9! I didn't wear maternity clothes until month six- by month 9 I was a whale. Of course none of that mattered to me when my child nearly died after birth. Just keeping it real...

who do the palins think they are, the kennedys?
nice hubby, "more the merrier". okay i guess once he's back to the slope and residents paying for child care while she's at "work".
if problems during later stages, wonder what her opinion of partial birth abortions will be then?
still wonder if pregnancy connected to some political goal. nothing happens in politics without a reason.

Having a uterus does not mean losing your brain
I can't believe I'm saying this because I'm the last person to ever jump on the women's lib. bandwagon but golly, just because the woman's uterus is currently occupied doesn't mean her brain automatically will malfunction!
One thing I like about Palin is that she remains true to being a conservative but is able to show that not all conservative - especially women, have to give up careers to be mothers. I think she and her family possess the ability to juggle having a high-profile mother, father who is either on the slope or staying at home and kids who are willing to take on other roles. Good for them for balancing it all and remaining a close family.
As far as entitlements go - I don't see anything to show they feel they are "Kennedy-esq". To the contrary, it seems they've prided themselves in being fairly "normal" Alaskans. I think the above posters reference and spite toward this issue is because their party didn't win the Gov's office and perhaps, the fact that their man lost to a girl - Ewww - Cooties!!!!
If she choses to hire a nanny, have childcare whatever, I have no reason to believe it won't come out of their pocketbook. I for one will be the very first person to request my campaign donation back if I hear she is having aids babysit for her.

GAK!
"if problems during later stages, wonder what her opinion of partial birth abortions will be then?"
That was one of the most uncalled for and heathenly things I've read in a long time. Just think about what you said. I am shaking my head at your audacity.
If something were to happen at this stage in the game, chances are the baby would be able to survive just fine on its own and would not need to be aborted. Where in the h*** would partial birth abortion figure into it? Have you lost all your marbles? Or was that just a way to "throw that out there?" Geez! {eyeroll}

As much as I admire Governor Palin, I am quite envious of the fact she has an extended family to help her with her children during her career. Most working women I know don't have that option. It is a rough road for many of us; there is not that many people to help us out.
Sarah is one fortunate woman.

I've seen plenty of petite women who are in the very late stages of pregnancy who hardly look pregnant at all. You would literally have to look at them from the profile, with them wearing something snug, to tell they were pregnant.
Why on earth would the Palin's make up such a story? Of all the things to lie about...

Oh dwiggin3 I don't believe that joanlee is suggesting that the Palin's are lying about them having a child. The question is who is having the baby. In my day, it wasn't uncommon for the baby to be raised by the baby's grandparents. I have interviewed Native Alaskans and they have told me that it is a common practice in the village for grandparents or an aunt to raise the child. In our modern times there should be no shame surrounding this type of situation. For goodness sake I almost married my high school sweetheart when I was 16.

Commonly, when a woman is in her 7th month of pregnancy, it really means timewise she's in her 6th month, leading UP to that 7th month. Thus, when a baby is delivered, it's really at the beginning of the 10th month or 40 weeks... When women say they're 9 months along, they're IN their 9th month of pregnancy, not necessarily at the end of it.
I'd read that the Governor's baby was due in May, which would mean she's somewhere in the 7th month. A month from now, she'll be in her 8th month and then in her 9th month for 30 days.
To put it a different way, when you first find out you're pregnant, at say 5 or 6 weeks, you're really in your 2nd month and when you're 20 weeks along, you're 5 months along even though you're only halfway there and still have 20 weeks to go. Did that make sense? 1st month is the first 30 days of pregnancy, 2nd month is the next 30 days of pregnancy... until you reach 280 days +/-

Is Sarah Palin really pregnant?
Joan-I'm with you. If you look at photos of her last month and this month it doesn't appear that Sarah is pregnant. Could it be that she is covering for someone else in the family? In my day that was common. I knew a friend that was raised by his grandparents.

Since when did being "open and transparent" apply to her private ongoings with her hubby and what goes on inside her womb?
If it were a man in her place, and the first lady was pregnant, I would say the same thing - who's business is it what they do in their private time.
Is your uterus or penis open and transparent?

Worried about Governor's pregnancy
I am not worried about the Governor's pregnancy in terms of her health, exactly. I'm not even worried about how having a baby will affect her effectiveness as Governor; I'm sure she can do both. As a Government teacher, I am worried about how the pregnancy will work for, or against, women in politics. Potential pregnancy is one of the biggest excuses I have heard as to why people don't want to vote women into political positions. Even as a lifelong democrat, I still respect Governor Palin and what she has done while in office so far. The pressure shouldn

What is wrong with this society? Way to go Governor Palin.
It is her right to have a child if she wishes, she is a fine governor and cares about the state of alaska, and has proven that to me.

As someone was quoted in the article, it irks me when hearing Palin say that she had her daughter Monday and was at work on Tuesday. It sounds like she is defending her ability to be pregnant, give birth and maintain her political career. Why should she have to defend their decision to have another child? They aren't unable to support their family, they have good family values and they don't strike me as the type of people who will just dump the baby at the nearest daycare center and call it good.
Hey Interloper, I have a feeling there will be pictures of the First Dude wearing the Snugly soon after the First Baby arrives.
John Thompson, why should they have been using birth control? Just because she's the governor? Let me guess... you put all plans of children on hold with your significant other because you were working on your career/accepted a promotion/thought that you might one day aspire to bigger things than your current job. Why is it that if a man were holding office, no one would bat an eyelash that his wife was pregnant, (Steve Cowper anyone?) but heaven FORBID a WOMAN have children while running a state/company/whatever? Heads of major corporations do it all of the time without suffering blows and public scrutiny and constant questions about their ability to continue working.
Get over it, people. This is 2008. She'll do fine and except for the hoopla made by the press about it, I don't think anyone will notice when she has the baby, as far as her performance levels go.

This is a good thing
I know there are people complaining about the Palins adding a fifth child to their family. Where's the problem? The Palins are obviously good parents. They can more than afford to take care of each child without dipping into Welfare.
If you want to criticize people adding to their families, then criticize those who keep having more children while remaining on the Welfare rolls. They are the ones who need to stop, not those who can take care of their children without going on State aid.
