After this week’s windstorm, some residents are beefing up their stock of emergency supplies. Here’s a list from the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management of items to include in a basic emergency supply kit. Find more information at ready.alaska.gov.
• Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days.
• Food, at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food.
• Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert. Extra batteries for both.
• Flashlight and extra batteries.
• First aid kit.
• Cold-weather gear and blankets or sleeping bags.
• Dust mask to help filter contaminated air, plastic sheeting and duct tape.
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities.
• Can opener for food.
• Household bleach (not scented or color safe) and a dropper for disinfection purposes.
• Indoor-safe heat source such as hand warmers, Sterno, emergency candles or propane/butane heat source labeled for indoor use.
• Cellphone with chargers, inverter or solar charger.
