Sarah pandering to the far right and the ignorant

What a shame that Sarah has chosen to pander to the Jerry Prevo wing of the Republican party with her statement in the KAKM debate that creationism should be taught in public schools. It will probably be an effective ploy - Americans are remarkably ignorant about science. Whether it fits in the world view of fundamentalist Christians or not, these are demonstratable facts: the earth is billions of years old, life on earth started as primative forms billions of years ago, many forms of life that had existed are now extinct, and that many forms existing today did not exist in the past. Furthermore, natural pressures and mutation help life forms to adapt and change over time. Evolution is the cornerstone of modern biology. It is an all encompassing explaination of the living world that is as widely accepted in science as any theory can be. The details will change as science discovers more, but the overall story will hold together as it has now for over 100 years. So sorry to see Sarah sell out on this topic.

The Ignorant

Demonstratable facts? If the facts are so demonstratable you should have no trouble answering these questions:

Where did the space for the universe come from?

Where did matter come from?

Where did the laws of the universe come from (gravity, inertia, etc.)?

How did matter get so perfectly organized?

Where did the energy come from to do all the organizing?

When, where, why, and how did life come from non-living matter?

When, where, why, and how did life learn to reproduce itself?

With what did the first cell capable of sexual reproduction reproduce?

Why would any plant or animal want to reproduce more of its kind since this would only make more mouths to feed and decrease the chances of survival? (Does the individual have a drive to survive, or the species? How do you explain this?)

How can mutations (recombining of the genetic code) create any new, improved varieties? (Recombining English letters will never produce Chinese books.)

Is it possible that similarities in design between different animals prove a common Creator instead of a common ancestor?

Natural selection only works with the genetic information available and tends only to keep a species stable. How would you explain the increasing complexity in the genetic code that must have occurred if evolution were true?

When, where, why, and how did:
Single-celled plants become multi-celled? (Where are the two and three-celled intermediates?)
-Single-celled animals evolve?
-Fish change to amphibians?
-Amphibians change to reptiles?
-Reptiles change to birds? (The lungs, bones, eyes, reproductive organs, heart, method of locomotion, body covering, etc., are all very different!)

How did the intermediate forms live?

When, where, why, how, and from what did:
-Whales evolve?
-Sea horses evolve?
-Bats evolve?
-Eyes evolve?
-Ears evolve?
-Hair, skin, feathers, scales, nails, claws, etc., evolve?

Which evolved first (how, and how long; did it work without the others)?
-The digestive system, the food to be digested, the appetite, the ability to find and eat the food, the digestive juices, or the body’s resistance to its own digestive juice (stomach, intestines, etc.)?
-The drive to reproduce or the ability to reproduce?
-The lungs, the mucus lining to protect them, the throat, or the perfect mixture of gases to be breathed into the lungs?
-DNA or RNA to carry the DNA message to cell parts?
-The termite or the flagella in its intestines that actually digest the cellulose?
-The plants or the insects that live on and pollinate the plants?
-The bones, ligaments, tendons, blood supply, or muscles to move the bones?
-The nervous system, repair system, or hormone system?
-The immune system or the need for it?

There are many thousands of examples of symbiosis that defy an evolutionary explanation. Why must we teach students that evolution is the only explanation for these relationships?

How would evolution explain mimicry? Did the plants and animals develop mimicry by chance, by their intelligent choice, or by design?

When, where, why, and how did man evolve feelings? Love, mercy, guilt, etc. would never evolve in the theory of evolution.

How did photosynthesis evolve?

How did thought evolve?

How did flowering plants evolve, and from that?

What kind of evolutionist are you? Why are you not one of the other eight or ten kinds?

What would you have said fifty years ago if I told you I had a living coelacanth in my aquarium?

Is there one clear prediction of macroevolution that has proved true?

What is so scientific about the idea of hydrogen as becoming human?

Do you honestly believe that everything came from nothing?

After you have answered the preceding questions, please look carefully at your answers and thoughtfully consider the following questions.

Are you sure your answers are reasonable, right, and scientifically provable, or do you just believe that it may have happened the way you have answered? (Do these answers reflect your religion or your science?)

Do your answers show more or less faith than the person who says, "God must have designed it"?

Is it possible that an unseen Creator designed this universe? If God is excluded at the beginning of the discussion by your definition of science, how could it be shown that He did create the universe if He did?

Is it wise and fair to present the theory of evolution to students as fact?

What is the end result of a belief in evolution (lifestyle, society, attitude about others, eternal destiny, etc.)? (by the way, Hitler used his belief in evolution to kill Jews - he believed he was simply helping evolution along)

Do people accept evolution because of the following factors?
-It is all they have been taught.
-They like the freedom from God (no moral absolutes, etc.).
-They are bound to support the theory for fear of losing their job or status or grade point average.
-They are too proud to admit they are wrong.
-Evolution is the only philosophy that can be used to justify their political agenda.

Should we continue to use outdated, disproved, questionable, or inconclusive evidences to support the theory of evolution because we don’t have a suitable substitute (Piltdown man, recapitulation, archaeopteryx, Lucy, Java man, Neanderthal man, horse evolution, vestigial organs, etc.)?

Should parents be allowed to require that evolution not be taught as fact in their school system unless equal time is given to other theories of origins (like divine creation)?

What are you risking if you are wrong? As one debate opponent said, "Either there is a God or there is not. Both possibilities are frightening."

Why are many evolutionists afraid of the idea of creationism being presented in public schools? If we are not supposed to teach religion in schools, then why not get evolution out of the textbooks? It is just a religious worldview.

Aren’t you tired of faith in a system that cannot be true?

Wouldn’t it be great to know the God who made you, and to accept His love and forgivenes?

Write me back if you want to open your eyes to truth.

Honest answers from a presbyterian science undergrad:

Where did the space for the universe come from?
Nobody knows. There are hypotheses. No theories.

Where did matter come from?
Nobody knows. The universe-from-a-single-point (big bang singularity) almost gets around the First Law of Thermodynamics (no free energy/matter), but not quite.

Where did the laws of the universe come from (gravity, inertia, etc.)?
Nobody knows.

How did matter get so perfectly organized?
It turns out that given just four forces (electromagnetic, strong nuclear, weak nuclear, and gravity) and the definition of forces (that things don't accelerate, positively or negatively, without them) (that would be the explanation for inertia), and given lots of matter scattered randomly, all that matter gets organized into sphere shapes, which then collect into galaxy shapes... you get my drift. Given matter and a few laws, the rest of the creation of the universe takes care of itself. My personal favorite view of God is as the lawmaker. I hope you realize that the genesis story is at best a parable. The creatures are made in approximately evolutionary order (try giving a person 6000 years ago a few million years of history in a dream, vision, or conversation), but the day is obviously not a just a single day. God creates the sun on the third day...

Where did the energy come from to do all the organizing?
Gravity, mostly. The amount of potential energy held in mass that hasn't fallen to the center of the universe is rather amazing.

When, where, why, and how did life come from non-living matter?
No-one knows where, except that it was in the sea. Your blood has the same concentration of salts as primordial seas, but not of today's seas, because of the constant erosion of salt into the sea, which puts the origin of life back a fair ways. I prefer the water-filled soap-bubble, which is chemically practically the same as a cell. You put that together with some other exotic ingredients (a few links of deoxyribonucleic acid) just once, and have it reproduce (randomly at first, but once it starts passing on bits of what makes it itself, the ones more likely to reproduce do and those are the ones we see today) and you've got all the life on earth.

When, where, why, and how did life learn to reproduce itself?
Medium-strength definition of life, my friend: that which can reproduce itself and use energy. Anything that randomly starts to reproduce itself, by accident, is life in my book. Viruses included, thank you very much.

With what did the first cell capable of sexual reproduction reproduce?
Single cells don't reproduce. They do exchange genetic material sometimes, hermaphroditically, but it isn't a requirement of reproduction. Worms can reproduce sexually, but go asexual if they have to. Short answer: a hermaphrodite.

Why would any plant or animal want to reproduce more of its kind since this would only make more mouths to feed and decrease the chances of survival? (Does the individual have a drive to survive, or the species? How do you explain this?)
Answer: Think about a camel six thousand years ago. Is it still alive today? No. If no camels six thousand years ago had wanted to reproduce, would any still be alive today? No. Only the ones that want to reproduce do, so those are the ones that we see today.

How can mutations (recombining of the genetic code) create any new, improved varieties? (Recombining English letters will never produce Chinese books.)
Does anybody read the dictionary to come up with a new word when they find something completely new? No. They invent a random one. Several people do this, and eventually one or two forms of the word get selected because those are the ones that people enjoy using. That's how we got English and French from Latin: small mutations over time. Latin went extinct because it didn't reproduce. In the same way, crappy mutations don't reproduce. Good ones do. That's why lots of Africans historically got sickle-cell anemia: if they don't have any sickle cell genes, they get malaria. If they have one, they survive because their red blood cells are just wacky enough. If they have two, they die of sickle cell anemia because their red blood cells are completely out of whack. Sickle cell anemia sucks as a mutation if both your parents have one sickle gene and you get stuck with two. But those one-gene-each parents will have roughly half of their children with one sickle gene. They've reproduced viable offspring, so evolution is happy. And it's their children we see today, perpetuating the cycle.

Is it possible that similarities in design between different animals prove a common Creator instead of a common ancestor?
Yes, in the same way that it is possible we were all created in the past 10 minutes, with prefabricated memories.

Natural selection only works with the genetic information available and tends only to keep a species stable. How would you explain the increasing complexity in the genetic code that must have occurred if evolution were true?
See the question above about mutations. The idea that natural selection is only believed to keep a population stable is false. You mutate in the ability to sprint faster, you survive better, your offspring survive better, we see your offspring.

When, where, why, and how did:
Single-celled plants become multi-celled?
(Where are the two and three-celled intermediates?)
See Volvox, an organism made up of many similar algae cells that all work together as one organism, with only a few reproducing and the others working to supply them.

-Single-celled animals evolve?
See "Life from non-living matter"

-Fish change to amphibians?
Some fish alive today breath air. Others, like mudskippers, spend much of their lives out of water. We do not get clean divisions in nature, much as we like to classify.

-Amphibians change to reptiles?
Answer: Why do some snakes have vestigial legs?

-Reptiles change to birds? (The lungs, bones, eyes, reproductive organs, heart, method of locomotion, body covering, etc., are all very different!)
Dinosaur fossils have been found with imprints of feathers, clearly recording the existence of feathered dinosaurs.

How did the intermediate forms live?
All the animals mentioned above, with the exception of feathered dinosaurs, are still alive today.

When, where, why, how, and from what did:
-Whales evolve?
See ambulocetus: the genera of walking whales. Fossils found.
-Sea horses evolve?
I'm not sure, actually. If you are refering to the marvelous air bladder keeping them alive, the answer is obvious: many fish have air bladders. They are actually what evolved into lungs as fish began to leave the oceans.

-Bats evolve?
Look at the skeleton of any bat, or any other mammal, and tell me that it doesn't look unecessarily human. Have you looked at a dolphin's flippers lately? Some older bat fossils have been found. The link between land and flighted mammals is still missing.

-Eyes evolve?
Even some single-celled organisms have structures that transform light to electricity, which isn't all that complex. It tells photosynthetic organisms where light is, so that they can photosynthesize. This gives them an edge over the ones that just sit and hope they're in the sun.

-Ears evolve?
All you need for a functioning ear is a small hair that can feel its own movement in air vibrations. The rest of the amazingly complex human ear is refinement and window dressing.

-Hair, skin, feathers, scales, nails, claws, etc., evolve?
Shells, the precursor to other hardened organs, have been around since single-celled organisms started laying down calcium carbonate from the ocean around their bodies. Everything else is, again, evolutionary window dressing.

The following is copied from http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/2000-03/953848950.Ev.r.html, and was written by Michael Onken:
a. The digestive system, the food to be digested, the appetite, the ability to find and eat the food, the digestive juices, or the body’s resistance to its own digestive juice (stomach, intestines, etc.)?

Metabolism is often cited as one of the prerequisites for life, so from the very beginnings of life (if not before) there has been a requirement (appetite) for certain chemicals (food) from which any organism gains materials and energy to grow and reproduce. In many microorganisms, some portion of the metabolism occurs outside the cell in order to break down complex chemicals into their usable components (digestion) for absorption by the cell. Later, some microorganisms adapted controlled motility, through flagella, cilia, and pseudopodia, which allowed them to move toward sources of food. If we fast forward to multicellular animals, we see the beginnings of the "digestive system" as early as the coelenterates (jellyfish, comb-jellies, etc.) which have a single mouth/anus which opens into a stomach. These evolved into "flatworms" which eventually separated their mouths and anuses to produce the linear digestive tract common among the protostomes and deuterostomes (including humans). Initially, digestion was accomplished entirely through enzymes, but internal digestion allows the organism to taylor the environment in which these enzymes function. The addition of acids, alkalis, and detergents to the digestive juices would have happened much later, and must have postdated the resistant lining which protects the digestive tract from the food as much as from the juices.

b. The drive to reproduce or the ability to reproduce?

Again, reproduction is a hallmark of life. Evolutionarily, anything that can reproduce itself will outcompete anything else that cannot reproduce itself. This has been shown to be true even at the molecular level in experiments studying the in vitro evolution of RNA enzymes (called ribozymes), so I don't think you can really separate the drive to reproduce from the ability to reproduce.

c. The lungs, the mucus lining to protect them, the throat, or the perfect mixture of gases to be breathed into the lungs?

The vertebrate lung evolved from modified pouches in the digestive tracts of early fish (in modern fish, these sacs have evolved into swim bladders). So, the throat and mucus lining (see part a.) were already present before animals with air-breathing lungs began to appear. I wouldn't call our atmosphere "the perfect mixture of gases": it is simply the mixture that was available when lungs evolved, and so our lungs have evolved to get as much use out of this mixture as possible.

d. DNA or RNA to carry the DNA message to cell parts?

According to the present theories, RNA came first and was used to code the genome as well as act as a template for protein synthesis. DNA was a later development and represented a more stable and more accessible medium for storing the genetic information.

e. The termite or the flagella in its intestines that actually digest the cellulose?

By "flagella" I'll assume you mean enteric bacteria, since flagella themselves are motile and not digestive structures. All modern terrestrial animals have bacteria in their digestive tracts that assist in the digestion of foods, so it is safe to guess that the ancestral species that gave rise to the termites were probably home to some form of enteric bacteria that could break down cellulose.

f. The plants or the insects that live on and pollinate the plants?

Fossil evidence suggests that plants began to populate the land long before animals: in fact, it wasn't until there were enough plants (food) to make it worthwhile that the first arthropods began to venture out of the water. The insects evolved from some of these first amphibious arthropods. Pollen-bearing plants don't appear in the fossil record until much, much later.

g. The bones, ligaments, tendons, blood supply, or muscles to move the bones?

Bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscle are all evolved from the same early connective tissues. Again looking at the coelenterates, the first mesodermal cells were contractile (that's how jellyfish swim) as well as producing a connective extracellular matrix. The division and differentiation into separate contractile cells (myocytes) and connective cells (fibroblasts) occured later. The vertebrate line is defined by a rigid rod (the notochord) which is composed of densely packed connective tissue (cartilage) layed down by specialized fibroblasts called chondrocytes. Bone evolved much later from the calcification of cartilage. The heart is common to all protostomes and deuterostomes, although the closed circulation is only seen in the deuterostomes. This appears to have evolved some time early in the chordates.

h. The nervous system, repair system, or hormone system?

I'm not sure which repair system you are refering to, so I won't hazzard a guess. The use of soluble chemicals (hormones) for communication goes back to single- celled organisms, so this clearly predates the nervous system which appeared quite early in the animals in the form of webs of sensory cells.

i. The immune system or the need for it?

There were bacteria and viruses on Earth long before the "higher" organisms. Since the cellular immune system is specific to the vertebrates (immunity, in general, is seen in both plants and animals), there was clearly parasitism and infection long before this particular strategy for dealing with it evolved.

End of quotation.

There are many thousands of examples of symbiosis that defy an evolutionary explanation. Why must we teach students that evolution is the only explanation for these relationships?
Answer: For example? I cannot think of one symbiosis relationship that does not help both partners reproduce, the definition of evolutionary viability.

How would evolution explain mimicry? Did the plants and animals develop mimicry by chance, by their intelligent choice, or by design?
Chance. Almost all evolution works by chance. Do you think that black widow males have been working for millenia towards being eaten by the females? The only non-chance evolution is in domesticated animals (dogs from wolves, cows from, well, other cows). An animal that mimics something by accedent survives better, and we see the better-mimicing offrspring of its better-mimicing offspring multiplied by a few hundred years.

When, where, why, and how did man evolve feelings? Love, mercy, guilt, etc. would never evolve in the theory of evolution.
Actually, they fit in nicely. Societies that have members that all cooperate (driven by feelings of love, mercy, guilt, etc.) work together better so that every member survives better in the group than individually. Since these societies continue themselves so well, these are the ones we see today. Would the U.S. be a superpower without these feelings? Would its citizens survive better?

How did photosynthesis evolve?
Small bacteria randomly got the ability to create energy (and then ATP) from light. One of these bacteria got eaten by another single-celled organism that had terrible digestion, and their descendants are the trees. Even if some of these organisms eventually mutated in the ability to digest their cholorplasts, they would die and their sisters would continue on without shedding a tear.

How did thought evolve?
That is a sticky one. Thought is really just a complexicated version of reflex, which has been around since near the first life. Any bacteria will react to stimuli. We just happen to do it in a more complex fashion. The flip side is that intangible quality: awareness. I have no idea whether or not you are aware, and you have no idea whether I am aware. I, however, know that I exist. This is not possible for simple reflex: a chemical reaction, no matter how complexicated, probably does not know that it exists. This, I think, is where the soul comes in.

How did flowering plants evolve, and from that?
Flowers were evolved from leaves. There is not much difference betwen leaf-stem relationships and flower-stem relationships. Just accidental tweaking of the genes by stray solar radiation (that would be light) or another sources (transcription errors, fission errors, etc.).

What kind of evolutionist are you? Why are you not one of the other eight or ten kinds?
The fact is, you can be all of the eight or ten kinds (Cosmic, stellar, Macro, Micro, etc.). All the same principles apply to anything that has reproduced and died over a few generations; or to anything that is created and destroyed at a fixed rate, but in which the creation and destruction is influenced by the system. That includes not only biology, but chemistry and the universe. The only real point of difference here is that for evolution to work any of these, the universe has to be billions of years old, conflicting with the world view of some Christians. Personal view: it was really hard, and really pointless, and possibly counterproductive, to tell someone 6000 years ago that the creation of the world happened over 4.5 billion years. So it happened it 7 periods of time. Not literal days. (Again, it is difficult to create the sun on the third day).

What would you have said fifty years ago if I told you I had a living coelacanth in my aquarium?
I think you should say 100 years. Here goes: Cool. Did you go back in time? In all seriousness, the fact that scientists hadn't seen a living coelacanth didn't mean it wasn't alive. Just that it was as likely as a small, feathered dinosaur to be alive. What would you say if I told you I had a small, feathered dinosaur in my backyard? Would you take it on faith? Why or why not? I try to have real answers about why I have faith in God (most are above, in some form or other).

Is there one clear prediction of macroevolution that has proved true?
Like that we found a missing link between whales and other mammals in the fossil record?

What is so scientific about the idea of hydrogen as becoming human?
What isn't scientific about it?

Do you honestly believe that everything came from nothing?
No.

After you have answered the preceding questions, please look carefully at your answers and thoughtfully consider the following questions.

Are you sure your answers are reasonable, right, and scientifically provable, or do you just believe that it may have happened the way you have answered? (Do these answers reflect your religion or your science?)
Yes. They are completely proveable, except where stated otherwise.

Do your answers show more or less faith than the person who says, "God must have designed it"?
They show, where not specifically refering to God, the assumption that what I percieve is a fairly accurate depiction of the world around me (not the dream of a higher being) and the assumption that I am not being tricked by a huge and far-reaching government conspiracy.

Is it possible that an unseen Creator designed this universe? If God is excluded at the beginning of the discussion by your definition of science, how could it be shown that He did create the universe if He did?
Answer: It is possible that we were created in the past 20 minutes, with prefabricated memories. Again, scientists really have no idea about why. Just how. Why mass and gravity? Nobody knows. But I can tell you how much propellant and what angle your pumpkin cannon has to have to hit a target 200 feet away. Why the universe? We don't know. We know it is expanding, though.

Is it wise and fair to present the theory of evolution to students as fact?
Answer: Why are people afraid of learning about science if they know that it will not contradict their beliefs about God? If you believe that an impartial scientist might be able to prove God false, do you truly believe in God? Evolution is called a theory because for over 100 years all of its predictions have either not been proven either way or have been proven true.

What is the end result of a belief in evolution (lifestyle, society, attitude about others, eternal destiny, etc.)? (by the way, Hitler used his belief in evolution to kill Jews - he believed he was simply helping evolution along)
Evolution makes no moral judgement. It simply calls life like it is. Deal with it. Should we say that things fall up because the guillotine required a blade falling down? Other than expanded time frames (the universe is 4.5 thousand million years old instead of 6000, civilized humanity is 10000 years or so old instead of 6000) christianity and science really have few differences (other than a few second or thirdhand reports of God breaking the First Law of Thermodynamics to create the universe, and the creation of the universe breaks the first law unless you believe in time being circular).

Do people accept evolution because of the following factors?
-It is all they have been taught.
Not me: I was raised Christian. Still go to church on Sundays. And have read my NIV Bible cover to cover.

-They like the freedom from God (no moral absolutes, etc.).
See above.

-They are bound to support the theory for fear of losing their job or status or grade point average.
I'm an undergrad in university, graduated second-highest academically from high school. I had an extremely well-rooted atheist as a science teacher. We had some great debates about the existence of God (outside of class time, mostly).

-They are too proud to admit they are wrong.
I'm humble. Real humble.

-Evolution is the only philosophy that can be used to justify their political agenda.
I very little political agenda. I'd like for the Green Party up here in Canada to get a seat in Parliament, though. I'd also like for the archaic first-past-the-post elections to be changed for proportional representation. I don't think that that has much to do with evolution, though.

Answer: What's outdated and inconclusive about vestigial organs? Why would an intelligent designer, designing the world from scratch, without evolution, give animals incredibly useless organs? Because they looked funny? Laziness? Doesn't seem like my God. And recapitulation: sure, the original theory that phylogeny is represented exactly in ontogeny was disproved. That doesn't change that whales get legs in early embryonic developement, and then lose them again, when they go back to little bones by the spine. Seems a little strange to me if you don't consider evolution.

Should parents be allowed to require that evolution not be taught as fact in their school system unless equal time is given to other theories of origins (like divine creation)?
Why give equal time? Sure, explain that some people don't believe in evolution for religious reasons. That takes ten minutes. However, we do not teach evolution or Islamic creation in a Christian theology class. I see no need to teach Muslim, Hindu, Christian, and the hundred-odd other creation stories in a science class.

What are you risking if you are wrong? As one debate opponent said, "Either there is a God or there is not. Both possibilities are frightening."
Answer: Perhaps we should pray to every god ever prayed to? If we take this line of reasoning, we'll be sacrificing bulls to Zeus at Mount Olympus. And we won't be able to practice Christianity: with all the other religions that could have the right idea, we can't give it up to practice the "no gods before me" religion. The odds just don't make sense.

Why are many evolutionists afraid of the idea of creationism being presented in public schools? If we are not supposed to teach religion in schools, then why not get evolution out of the textbooks? It is just a religious worldview.
Answer: Evolution predicts that things evolve. It predicted many missing links that have been found. God has, unfortunately, proved nothing. It is not science: you cannot use it. Unless you're the pope. That's why I'm Protestant.

Aren’t you tired of faith in a system that cannot be true?
Which one?

Wouldn’t it be great to know the God who made you, and to accept His love and forgivenes?
I believe in God, and worship Him. The Bible tells me to fear Him. I don't know, however, if I can ever truly know Him.

evolution

we dont know where matter came from, we dont know how the laws of physics originated. Im not very well educated on the subject, but im sure lots of your questions cant be answered by the evolution theory.

But its just a theory. And its the best one so far.

Why cant religion and science coexist in peace? For all we know, there might be some kind of supreme being watching over us. There might be a supreme being which created matter, and the laws of physics. Science is not a replacement for religion! Its basically a practical tool for developing technology and making life easier for the people on this planet. It does not give you ANY ethical guidelines in life.

Evolution theory should not be teached in school as THE truth! It should be emphasized as the best scientific theory SO FAR. I think this is the problem. It seems to me, that today, one have to chose between science or God.

And the people how coldly rejects any other theory than the evolution theory is missing the whole point of science! When it comes to science, it is useless once it is established as the truth, and not as a theory. Theories are always changing. The old greek philosophers said that the smallest building block of matter was the atoms. Later, scientist discovered smaller stuff than atoms, and in the future there may be even smaller stuff inside.

You cant teach how to build a robot from reading the bible, and you cant learn how to be a decent human being form reading Darwin.

But we need both.

Creationism should be taught in church... not in public schools.

Why is it that Christians want to force their beliefs on others yet others are able to tolerate Christian beliefs and do not attempt to force their beliefs on them.

I think the problem begins with the sentence "and God created man in his image". Christians seem to feel that God is an image of present day man".

Maybe God has a tail, gills and swims rather than walks and it is through random evolution of the species that we see ourselves as we do today.

Beliefs

Evolutionist are not trying to force their belief on Christians?
"Why is it that Christians want to force their beliefs on others yet others are able to tolerate Christian beliefs and DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FORCE THEIR BELIEFS ON THEM." (Emphasis added)

What counrty do you live in? I see evolution attempting to be forced on me everyday - including this discussion board. If you want to believe in evolution (and what type of evolution was that again? Cosmic, Chemical, Stellar/Planetary, Organic, Macro or Micro evolution?) that is your choice and you should have no trouble answering the questions I posted in a response above this post.

Theories and the G.O.P.

The Republican Party plank supporting the teaching of evolution as only a theory, and Palin's remarks about wanting a "healthy debate" are as hilarious as they are ignorant. I was curious how wide-spread these beliefs are, so I asked my middle school science students what they thought a theory meant in the context of science. Their replies ranged from "a theory is a guess about an idea", "a hypothesis," or "a theory is an explanation about something."

None of them understood yet that a theory in the context of science is an explanation so powerful that it can predict both the past and the future. Our Grand Old Party Leaders and their current fresh face are as clueless as young kids when it comes to knowing the difference between a "street theory" and a scientific theory. For example, you and I might act on a theory we have that gas costs more in the summer by purchasing gas futures in April, but since our theory is based on shifting evidence and assumptions, we'll get burned on our investment sooner or later. Whereas the theory of Plate Tectonics can accurately predict general locations of future earthquakes. The theory of Evolution can predict the responses of species to past and future environmental pressures. Creationism, which has no allegience to evidence, intellectual rigor, or experimental design has no place in a science classroom. To subject a rigid, narrow interpretation of faith such as creationism to analysis and allow its deconstruction by science teachers would result in a very different "debate" than Palin spoke of: a debate that is embarrassing, unhealthy, and unfair.

Scientific Theory

If evolution is as sound a "scientific theory" in being "so powerful that it can predict both the past and the future" then you should have no problem answering the questions posed about your "theory" that I posted above this posting. The further definition of "scientific theory (as found on Wikipedia) is: "a proposed description, explanation, or model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and CAPABLE OF BEING TESTED THROUGH EXPERIMENT OR OTHERWISE FALSIFIED THROUGH EMPIRICAL OBSERVATION" (emphasis added) True "science" doesn't exclude any possibilities when testing theories and so far the only smallest of piece of evolution (that being micro-evolution i.e. variation within kind of species)can be verified by "empirical observation." This hardly supports the whole "evolution theory" as it is put forth and could very easily be explained by a different "theory." And evolution is still just a "scientify theory" as there is no evidence to support it becoming a scientific law.

In regards to instruction in the classroom, what is embarrassing, unhealthy and unfair is teaching lies to our children. THAT is what has no place in a "science classroom". But if you remove the lies about evoultion from the textbooks you wouldn't have anything to support YOUR religon now would you.

The bottom line is if evolution is wrong you would have to look at the alternative - that someone designed this world we live in. And if you had to do that, you might actually open your eyes and see the God of the universe who wants to have a personal relationhsip with you. Tell me why is this so tragic and frightening again?

Creationism in schools

Creationism should not be taught in public schools. It's not a theory, it's a fairy tale. Do you suppose we could learn to create oil in 7 days, eh?

Oil in 7 days

No, I don't think YOU could create oil in 7 days. But then again, my God is so smart and powerful that He designed and brought this world into existance just with His voice. Can you create anything tangible with your voice? If not, maybe you need to open your eyes and heart to the one who can and stop believing the lie of evolution.

Creationism in Schools

I’ll let the folks below debate the “religion vs. science” aspect of this story. I’m going to focus on the discussion topic at hand: “Should Intelligent Design be taught along side evolution in Alaska public schools?” This is not a question of faith, but rather a question of faith’s role in public education.

I believe that people have the right to their own beliefs. I think that there is a time and a place to discuss the larger idea of “creation” in schools. As a scientific matter, this place is the science classroom. As a theological matter, I think this place is History. Discussing the differences between (and the theoretical backgrounds behind) religion is an interesting, thought-provoking, and stimulating task. I call it a task because there are many theories behind the creation of the earth—not just those involving a Christian God and “Evolution”¬¬—and the theories behind them are complex and deeply felt.

If Palin is suggesting that all students in Alaska should contemplate creation on a worldwide religious scale, then I applaud her. Much of my liberal arts education involved the idea of a “supreme being.” Those “beings,” though, had many different names and came from myriad locales throughout the world. Contemplating different peoples’ and cultures’ beliefs is an essential skill for developing the empathy that many of today’s youth are accused of not having. And, by understanding and respecting others’ beliefs, we better understand our own.

If Palin is suggesting that “Intelligent Design” should be taught in science, then I think that there should be some scientific basis behind it. Simply taking the theory of evolution (and the complexity of organisms) and adding “God’s Hand” to it does not make it scientific. Studying evolution does not inherently discount the idea of a creator, it just offers a varying theory of how life progressed through time.

I think that there is an interesting double standard playing out in the discussions below. Many people think that those with religious beliefs should open their minds and let the theory of evolution in. “At least consider it,” they might say. However, those same people don’t seem to be willing to open their own minds to others’ beliefs. It is this stubbornness that keeps this debate moving along. After all, we are discussing “theories” here. At least as far as public schools are concerned.

Disappointed but not surprised

I submitted a comment earlier today asking people to please read 'The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark' by Carl Sagan.

I am disappointed but not surprised more people did not respond, perhaps an indication of how things truly are. A shame. I would ask again, please read this book. It helps.
