Valentine's Day: Sweeten the day for him

FEBRUARY 14, 2009 - 2:10 PM

Valentine’s Day gifts for guys was the subject the last weekend when a friend mentioned a recent complaint her boyfriend had: He told her he’d never had a girl give him underwear.

I laughed at first, and I thought about all of the times I’ve bought boyfriends boxer shorts with fun patterns just because I could or because they were in a bin next to the register. (It’s the like the impulsive candy grab in the check out line at the grocery store—and they know that.) But then I got to thinking about typical romantic gifts promoted and bought for women on Valentine’s Day versus gifts that are advertised for men. And, honestly, for the most part, I drew a big blank.

Valentine's Day: Sweeten the day

FEBRUARY 13, 2009 - 7:53 AM

Here's a little Friday the 13th quiz for you: What's more frightening than Jason at Crystal Lake, seven years of bad luck or any other reason superstitious folks could possibly scare up so they can stay in bed today?

Answer: Waking up tomorrow (in case you haven't looked at a calendar, it'll be Valentine's Day) without anything for the lady you love.

It may be Valentine's eve, but it's not too late to score the perfect little token of your love and affection. I scoured the city to find a collection of gifts and create a roundup of last-minute shopping spots where you can load up on choices for her that are sweet, sexy or shiny.

Anchorage gets Current/Elliot

JANUARY 12, 2009 - 10:56 PM

There was a brief moment back in July when fashion bloggers got all bothered about Katie Holmes’ jeans. She wore them baggy, ripped, pegged—and in public. You can’t be Victoria Beckham’s short-skirted sidekick one day and Punky Brewster the next without raising a few sculpted eyebrows, and the sentiments ranged from concerned to horrified. And this launched the Katie Holmes Jeans Watch 2008 ...

Long story short: The cyber-fashionistas criticized what they didn’t understand, but by October Holmes’ style was cutting edge. And now (in six short months, mind you) you can buy one of her fave labels in Anchorage in the infamous style.

Tanner Randall is still taking on FIT

OCTOBER 1, 2008 - 11:17 PM

Remember Tanner Randall? It’s been a while since we’ve heard from the homegrown designer behind Nanuq of Alaska. He moved to New York City a year ago to study in the menswear program at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Here’s an update on how Randall’s fashion education is treating him, what he’s doing with his Nanuq line, and what he thinks of Sarah Palin.

"Classes started up last Monday, and it's as if I never had a summer: the same instructors, the same classmates, the same subjects. This semester I'm taking Menswear Design III, Patternmaking III: The Coat, Couture Details: The Shirt and Trouser, Italian II, Portfolio, and Computer Fashion Design: U4ia.

'A small fashion crime'

SEPTEMBER 3, 2008 - 8:38 PM

Things celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe said in the preview of her new reality TV show “The Rachel Zoe Project” that aren’t necessarily worth hearing, but totally worth repeating:

“I could die.”

“That’s bananas amazing.”

“I’d die.”

“It’s, like, bananas.”

“D-I-E.”

“Baby I shopped. It’s not like I committed a crime. It was, like, a small fashion crime.”

“You do kind of look like you forgot your pants.”

Watch it again Tuesday, 10 p.m., on Bravo, Channel 83. And then tell me what you think and if your opinion of the celebrity stylist has changed.

Target time

AUGUST 13, 2008 - 11:08 PM

I’m not ashamed to admit I love Target. I used to travel often for work, and it didn’t matter if I landed in a busy city or still town, the desired destination would always be the nearest Target.

I’d stock up on quirky greeting cards, paperie with personality and whatever the of-the-moment Isaac Mizrahi for Target creation was. I’d roam through the shabby-chic bedding and shiny kitchen gadgets mentally re-packing my luggage on every aisle in hopes that I could fit it all in.

Despite my deep and unconditional Target love, I was hesitant when I first found out Alaska would become a bullseye state. To the avid AK shopper, my hesitation is probably familiar: When a national store sets up shop here, it often ceases to be novel or affordable, and often doesn’t carry the quality or selection you’d find in its Lower 48 counterparts.

Trendspotting: Colors that bleed

JULY 29, 2008 - 12:06 AM

Kensie Fit & Flare ombre dress at Boutique BlushKensie Fit & Flare ombre dress at Boutique Blush

It isn’t exactly news that ombre—the dip-dye fabric effect in which colors graduate from light to dark—was on the spring ’08 trend list. But the color technique calls for a little courage and wasn’t exactly rushed onto local racks.

In this case, the AK adage is true: We were slow to catch on. But we’re getting there, and ombre looks just as good in fall colors. So start shopping these ombre options around town right now:

If you don’t want to do the dip-dye look from head to toe, check out the Kensie cap-sleeve ombre sweater in tomato ($58) or the purple French Connection ombre tank ($78) at The Studio Boutique & Cosmetica (110 W. Tudor Road, 868-1627).

Was it fasha-licious?

JULY 17, 2008 - 10:38 PM

I was planning on posting about the first episode of "Project Runway" season five, which aired last night. But by the time I got off work, I was almost over my irritation at Blayne for repping the West Coast like an obnoxious, tanorexic poser who will hopefully choke the next time he says "Holler at yer boy!" And I'd almost forgotten that anyone who's ever been to a frat party with an anything-but-clothes theme has made a better outfit from garbage bags than Stella managed.

‘Project Runway’ warm up

JULY 13, 2008 - 9:53 PM

I fell in love with this “Time” interview with Tim Gunn. The best parts: his opinion of Crocs and “the comfort trap,” and this quote: “Fashion is really a form of semiotics. It sends a message.”

Don’t you just love how he says exactly what you’re thinking, but he makes it sound so much better? I do!

More excited for the “Project Runway” season five premiere on July 16? Good, me too.

On edge

JULY 12, 2008 - 1:53 PM

There’s a slight chance I’m only into this New York Times style article because it taps into my high school fantasy of wanting a life like those in a J. Crew catalog (C’mon, check out the accompanying slideshow. Can you blame me?). But men of Alaska should take note.

Most Alaskan men are inclined to wear oversized cargo shorts and baggy below-the-knee denim—and that’s a style topic for another day—but, to quote the article, if you wear anything “prissy” (read: slim “dress shorts” with perfect hems and pleats) in warmer weather, consider the frayed edges.

Sadly, no summer SoNo show

JULY 2, 2008 - 11:14 PM

The latest update about SoNo’s summer fashion show is that it’s a no-go. According to Out of the Closet’s blog, the July 26 event has been cancelled—but there will be in-store events at the SoNo stores that weekend.

There are also plans for another fashion show—a potentially bigger, more fabulous show—in the works. Downtown stores Out of the Closet, She, Blush, Her Tern, About Face and Skinny Raven Sports are joining forces for a fall event at the new Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center on Oct. 3. Stay tuned for ticket information; I’ll keep you posted.
