Grants will help expand job training in health care and retail management through local employer partnerships
WASHINGTON – Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced $500 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country for the development and expansion of innovative training programs. Kodiak College is included in a $14 grant to a consortium of eight colleges in five states to train workers in allied health careers.

SEATTLE — Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air inflight recycling programs diverted more than 800 tons of inflight waste from landfills last year, including some 230 tons of aluminum and 185 tons of paper. That’s enough aluminum to build three new airplanes and enough paper to replace 3,100 trees. In addition to recycling more inflight waste, the two airlines have also reduced their carbon emissions by 30 percent per passenger mile since 2004.

The Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation Board of Trustees will meet Sept. 26-27 at the Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage.
On the afternoon of the 26th, there will be a panel discussion on “Challenges in Europe – Implications for Emerging Markets,” followed by a community reception.
The Board's consultant, Callan Associates, will review the Fund’s performance for Fiscal Year 2012 as part of the regular meeting.

(Anchorage, AK) – The Alaska Department of Natural Resources and the North Slope Borough sent a joint letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers this week urging them to keep to the target date of Sept. 21, 2012 for issuing a Record of Decision (ROD) on the Point Thomson Project.
The letter, signed by DNR Commissioner Dan Sullivan and North Slope Mayor Charlotte Brower, was prompted by the Corps’ recent public statements that it might miss the target date. Such a delay would be a major setback for the project, which is expected to provide 2,400 jobs at peak employment.

Fairbanks, Alaska – The Doyon, Limited board of directors has approved plans for several large Doyon oil and gas exploration projects in Interior Alaska totaling more than $37 million.
Sanctioned by the board are:
* Converting some 400,000 acres in the Nenana Basin that are currently under an oil and
gas exploration license that Doyon and others hold with the State of Alaska to sevenyear exploration leases.
* Drilling a new deep well in the Nenana Basin as early as this winter. Permitting for this is
now underway.

IcelandAirAnchorage, Alaska – Aug. 24, 2012 – Icelandair will begin nonstop service between Reykjavik, Iceland and Anchorage, Alaska in summer 2013. With twice weekly flights between May and September, the announcement means Anchorage will have additional connections to continental Europe and the United Kingdom as well.
